Advice needed for Australia

I have a friend who has been due to get get married last year but couldn't fly out due to covid. She did apply to leave the country on the basis of wanting to see her parents due to their old age and being alone in her home country. The application was rejected.

She is applying again on the basis of marriage, she has proof of wedding hall hire for the hen party and the reception along with proof of the original booking with the new dates for the events. She also has evidence of booked tickets for her siblings, two are currently in America and one is in Canada who are flying in with their families.

Does anyone have any idea/tips/ advice to help her application be accepted by the Australian border force.

Weddings (and hen dos) aren’t currently one of the permitted reasons to leave the country.

I was going to post the same link as Porridge. Weddings aren't a permitted reason, so her application is very likely to be rejected again.

Can she postpone again? I appreciate she probably doesn't want to, but that's probably preferable to moving everything to Aus and not having her family there... I do feel for her, though. We had to reschedule four times last year. I'm so glad that we got there in the end.

When is her wedding? because whether her application is accepted or not, the isolation slots are booked up until mid July.

Clotsaway · 10/05/2021 21:33

Wedding is in mid July and I think she will want to make her way back to Australia in September.

Apart from the reality that a wedding isn’t a reason to leave Australia at the moment, she really needs to look into how to get home. Airlines are still overbooking & cancelling flights daily. The repat flights only book with 2-3 weeks notice.

If she is planning a 3 week trip overseas, I can’t see how she’ll be able to get back with any certainty.

There are many Australians struggling to get back in their country as it is as only limited numbers are allowed in.

I don't think a wedding is a good enough excuse.

I can’t believe Australia has had a year to increase their quarantine provision and they’ve made zero progress on this front. That and the criminalization of their own citizens returning from India, is a pretty dire state of affairs tbh.

bluejelly · 10/05/2021 21:58

Horrible for people who can't travel/are stuck. But they have very little Covid so you can see why they've done it like that.

Clotsaway · 10/05/2021 21:58

I suppose they are not increasing the provision probably because it could lead to increase in people wanting to leave the country for one reason or another. But yes, it is a sad state of affairs if people will be prosecuted for going to certain countries.

They aren’t increasing the provision because the more people that come back, the more chances there are of a breakout over here. And given that we are woefully slow in rolling out the vaccine, they can’t risk loads of cases coming in.
A few weeks ago when the cases began to rise in India, our cases in quarantine were increasing from 3-5 per day, to around 15. Our quarantine hotels aren’t sealed, they’re just normal hotels so there was a real risk that this variant would start spreading through our non vaccinated population.
The real issue is our lack of vaccines but hopefully that will start to improve soon, I’m 43 and have now registered my interest and have been told I’ll be called in the next few weeks now that we are starting to open mass vaccination centres.
