Under 40 and vaccine booked

I’m 33 and have my jab booked in next week. I am pretty sure that my GP who have booked me in are using AZ. DH went last week and got AZ, he’s under 40, he’s 38.

If you’re under 40 would you rather have AZ next week or wait an indeterminate amount of time for Pfizer or Moderna? DH and I have different opinions and I’m interested in what others would do.

I’ve told him that ultimately it’s my choice and I will do what I think is right!

I’ve had one AZ and if I could go back there is no way I’d get it.

Cherrycee · 08/05/2021 21:13

Personally I would cancel with the GP and then book an appointment for one of the mass vaccination centres when the time comes. I presume the current advice is being taken into account when you make your booking, so as someone under 40 you will more than likely be allocated Pfizer or Moderna.

Ponoka7 · 08/05/2021 21:16

My DD (25) has opted not to get it, so has one of her friends. Both are unpaid carers. My other DD (22) has had hers and so have a lot of their friends in their 20's, all health care workers. They chose to go ahead and have the second one. You've just got to weigh up your own risk factors for Covid and the vaccine side effects.

IrisPurple · 08/05/2021 21:35

FFS get your jabs.

You don't want long Covid. My dad got post viral fatigue syndrome when he was early 40s. Dragged himself to work throughout, but nothing left when he got home. 40s, 50s wiped out. Eventually got over it, then old age took over.
A lad I went to school with got ME. In a wheelchair at 20. A girl at Uni age 20 - unable to get out of bed.
It used to be called 'Yuppie Flu' - "Yuppies", with their work hard play hard lifestyle were vulnerable to post viral fatigue syndrome.

Middle aged women are most at risk from long Covid - they are usually primary carers for young children, therefore don't have the luxury of resting when they get sick.
Mamy young people are at risk due due to a lifestyle that puts mind and body under stress - children, stressful job, partying, studying, whatever. My dad had a physically demanding job, and a mindset where he would never rest.

I was extremely glad to send my 45yo husband off for his AZ - doubt he'd have died if he'd got Covid, but he'd be a prime candidate for long Covid as like my dad, he never bloody stops.

So those who can't be bothered to get a vaccine, please don't swan off on holiday and bring back some variant that evades all our vaccines.

Just to be clear Iris I have no intention at all of not having my jab. The question for me is to potentially go ahead with the AZ jab, despite being under 40 and therefore against government/scientific advice or wait (note, wait, not cancel) until I am offered a Pfizer/moderna, whenever that may be.

I appreciate your points about the risks of
Covid, however my family will also be in trouble I have a stroke. It is about risk management as PP have said, and while I think I know what I’ll do I was interested in what others would do.

My appointment has been made, I’m due to go on Wednesday, I’m just trying to be prepared for all the potential decisions if it goes ahead.

I’m booked in at a vaccine centre for week after next. The text from my GP to book said it would be Pfizer

Moonlaserbearwolf · 08/05/2021 22:01

I’m right on the cut-off age and decided to have AZ the other day rather than wait for an alternative. The vaccine centre said it could be a few weeks wait.

The pfizer and moderna jabs use a new technology. Who knows what the long term impact of those jabs will be? Probably nothing at all, but I preferred the idea of having a traditional vaccine.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 08/05/2021 22:13

I can only assume that the AZ appointments for those under 40 were cancelled today at the hub I work at was because there was already a Pfizer or moderna clinic scheduled in within days at our venue and others close by to rebook into without a significant delay

Gyptian · 08/05/2021 22:15

I’m 39 and had the AZ one today. I am a bit worried about the blood clot risk and mentioned it at my appointment. They just said that the risks are very low and that the advice is for under 40’s to be offered an alternative where the supply allows and where it doesn’t cause a significant delay in receiving the vaccination. They said they don’t know what vaccine will be delivered when the appointments are released, so they couldn’t say how long the wait would be for an alternative. This was an appointment through the GP, so might be different at a mass vaccination centre.

Hallyup6 · 08/05/2021 22:40

I'm under 40 and had my first az just before all this blood clot stuff came up. I've had no problems other than a slightly sore spot on my arm. I'm happy to have the second dose as I believe the risk is so minimal. I've taken the pill for years and been on aeroplanes etc. and I think the risk of covid is greater than the vaccine.

Oaktree55 · 09/05/2021 13:16

It’s much higher risk than people realise. It’s between 1:20k (Norway finding) and 1:45k. They only say 1:100k as they use all the doses they’ve given in U.K. Look up cases in VAERS eg 33 in last 7 days (31 after first doses) and 600k doses given over those 7 days.

Obviously there’s a lag of symptoms of these rare clots so can’t just divide 600k doses by 33 cases but it’s not far off if you look at how many new Cases are appearing each 7 days!

Wrong how they report it really as misleading. Look at VAERS on line it’s updated every 7 days on a Thursday.

HarrietOh · 09/05/2021 13:26

If scientists are saying we’re more at risk of the vaccine then we are of covid at this point then I’d listen to them.
I’m all for the vaccine, however as an early 30s who has already had covid (and only had a headache) then I wasn’t keen on risking myself with the blood clots from the vaccine (no matter how small the risks are). I’m happy to have an alternative.

Volcanoexplorer · 09/05/2021 19:04

Dh and I are both 39 and were booked in for our vaccine today. However when we got there they only had the AZ jab. We were given a leaflet to read and told we’d have to sign a consent form because of our ages. The leaflet wasn’t that helpful but it did have a line that basically said that an official body recommends all under 40s have an alternative vaccine ie not the AZ. I was fine before, but they made a big deal about it and it made me worry. The clinic have rebooked us in next week for Pfizer instead. Feel like this is going to start happening a lot.

MrsFezziwig · 09/05/2021 23:27

Look up cases in VAERS eg 33 in last 7 days (31 after first doses) and 600k doses given over those 7 days.

I’m confused - I thought VAERS was the reporting system for the USA?

catfeets · 10/05/2021 12:54

I got my text a few days ago saying I could book - just said coronavirus vaccination. I'm 36.
My DP just got his text today specifically saying Pfizer vaccination. He's 31.

I'm hoping there's a choice when I get there (currently can't book an appointment for the days I'm free anyway) as I have previous issues with blood clot risk. My DP would be happy to have any vaccine as he's fit and healthy.
