Late second dose..

I have spoken to a lady recently, an elderly lady who lives alone. She had her first Astra Zeneca middle of Jan. it was booked through the doctors who told her they would ring to book second dose.

When it go to the end of April elderly lady realised she's overdue her second dose and rang up - they'd forgotten her basically. They've booked her in for this week I believe is around 15 weeks after first dose.

The recommended is up to 12 weeks but what are the implications of it being late?

I'm just very curious 😊 and wondering if this has happened before. She's an elderly lady who doesn't use the internet and isn't able to book online herself and was relying on her gp surgery to contact her!

This has happened to someone I know. I was wondering the same.

I know any immunity would be waning but was wondering if it would alter the effectiveness of the second dose.

I read earlier that Ireland are giving 16 weeks between doses, not sure if that's useful?

StillRailing · 07/05/2021 21:51

It puts it in perspective.

Not great for her own protection they left such a long gap. She will be more vulnerable without the second dose that helps to protect against infection and adds longevity.

However 15 weeks is fine. The antibodies don't just suddenly vanish. The immune system and t cell memory will stay possibly forever. Anyway good it wasn't longer as 16 weeks I believe is the longest any country has tried the gap. No harm done though.

I also know someone who was missed from the the 2nd jab list, luckily they contacted their surgery about it. Can see this happening a lot once the government has their numbers for first jabs,i may be cynical.

TruelyWonder · 07/05/2021 22:13

I really hate the idea that a vulnerable person may have their second jab late or possibly be missed. These things are bound to happen with such a mass roll out but still.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 07/05/2021 22:15

It very likely fine - booster will still work to enhance effects of first dose.

My dad is having his late, he’s having chemo and has to wait a week after the last treatment. He’ll be 14 weeks.

catkate10 · 07/05/2021 22:26

Happened to me though fortunately it resulted with my 2nd vaccine only being a few days late.
I did flag it with the surgery as we were told not to contact them for a 2nd vaccine date as they would contact us. I was informed that it was due to problems with the vaccinations being registered in a different system to their normal one and not automatically linking up.
Worrying though as to how many people had been missed, especially older people.

Whether they knew of this problem before I raised it I have no idea but I hope they have contacted anyone else who were missed out.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 07/05/2021 22:30

I’m part of a 3000 group that had theirs cancelled and rescheduled due to lack of vaccines so will be having my 2nd late tomorrow

Many are CEV and CV so I would have thought that if it was really such a major issue they wouldn’t have let this happen bug that a minor delay really isn’t an issue

Timeforanewname2014 · 07/05/2021 22:33

A close family member had this happened to them. When I queried with the GP reception they said it was due to a lack of supply (locally??) with the Pfizer vaccine they had for their first dose and that a few weeks later than 12 weeks wasn't a problem.
