To have Pfizer vaccine in pregnancy

mlj123 · 07/05/2021 17:42

Hi all. So I'm currently 5 months pregnant and due 10/9. I've just been invited for my Pfizer vaccine as now it's believed it is safe to have during pregnancy. I am a little bit unsure of whether to take it now or wait until after baby is born as it's only another 4 months. Any advice?

Have it now.
Covid in pregnancy isn’t fun.

Lucidas · 07/05/2021 17:47

It's a very personal decision and no one should feel shamed for it either way. I had mine a few weeks ago at 7 months pregnant. As long as I was past the first trimester I would have been comfortable.

PurpleDaisies · 07/05/2021 17:50

Your gp would be a really good person to talk to about this.

mlj123 · 07/05/2021 17:51

To add a bit more info, I'm 35 healthy and no underlying medical conditions. I'm just unsure because for ages they were against pregnant women having it and now it's changed making me wonder whether or not I should have it or wait. I haven't looked into it too much as previous advice was to wait so was a big shocked how quickly I got the invite. I will do a bit of research and also talk to the consultant at my next visit but any advice would be great. Thanks

The big change I think is the recent data from 90,000 pregnant women vaccinated in the US, showing no adverse effects on mother or baby. Hence why the guidance was updated quite suddenly. Before that it was 'we have no safety data so not recommended unless you're in a high risk setting'.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 07/05/2021 18:02

So my mw explained it to me as trials aren’t routinely done on pregnant women so they can’t release data to say “yes it’s absolutely safe” which is why, at the beginning it was advised not to get it. However now, more pregnant women have received the vaccine (90k+ in America have received Pfizer) and few reports of issues have come through. However more stats are being released on the dangers of catching covid while pregnant which clarified in my head what to do. Research both and see what you feel. It’s very personal.
However for me it’s actually getting the fucking thing that’s proven to be the main issues. Booking website says contact GP because they can’t guarantee Pfizer/ Moderna at the hubs. GPs can’t either though so dead end. MW said there would be notes on the system however I did book and turned up... AZ only no idea when Pfizer / Moderna would be at that site. Tried a different site, same thing. I’ve got whooping cough vaccine soon so will have to wait at least 2 weeks after that to try again, meanwhile supplies are dwindling. Very frustrating

That’s because they were waiting for more data, which they now have.

They’re now saying anyone under 40 should be given not-AZ so that might make it easier since the hubs are going to have to use more Pfizer/moderna as those groups are vaccinated in the next couple of weeks.

mlj123 · 07/05/2021 18:13

Wow that does sound frustrating. I am still a bit nervous about having it but feel maybe I should take it. One because I work in a busy hotel so will be meeting lots of people daily when we re open and two because they can't guarantee it will be available straight away after my pregnancy so might miss out.

Walking around a hotel unvaccinated would be really dangerous

I had my Pfizer vaccine 10 days after the whooping cough one. When I turned up at the walk-in at the hospital, the questionnaires all asked 'have you had another vaccine in the last 7 days?', and if you answered in the negative you were fine. Same when I had a chat with the doctor: 'have you had another vaccine in the last week', not 2 weeks.

But maybe it differs from place to place

8dpwoah · 07/05/2021 19:22

I must admit I was really pleased to see they are going to offer Pfizer as the default to under 40s as that means I won't have the hassle of trying to dodge AZ when my age group gets called shortly, having spoken to my GP and my midwife that was the only reservation I had, they've said Moderna or Pfizer as that's what they've got the data for from America. But GP confirmed they wouldn't be able to guarantee what they'd got in stock on the day so would have been some going backwards and forwards.
I'm in second trimester and increasingly worried about being around vaccinated people that are being less cautious so I'm keen to get it now really. But it is a very personal decision.

This is a link to the BBC website video about this

Covid and pregnancy - should you get the vaccine?

As the Covid vaccine is rolled out to younger age groups, what should you do if you're expecting a baby?

The guidance for pregnant people in the UK was changed last month following new data from the USA involving the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

BBC News Health Reporter Laura Foster looks at what the science says.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 08/05/2021 12:34

@Lucidas thanks for this. I was specifically told 14 days by my MW however I’ll clarify this with the GP / booking line. Interesting article, I hope the site is amended soon, it’s a shame it’s taken this long.

Smurftastic · 19/05/2021 14:40

@mlj123 how did it go? Did you have any side effects? I have my Pfizer booked for tomorrow and I'm similar age and gestation. I am slightly worried but I think I should take it.

BinkyRidesForth · 19/05/2021 14:52

Anyone else still in first trimester? I’m keen to get my vaccine ASAP as my job means I meet a LOT of people and go to a lot of different places and am finding other people people are being increasingly lax about social distancing/ mask wearing etc. I definitely want to have both before 3rd trimester if at all possible as that’s when COVID presents most risk as far as I understand it but I’m not sure whether I need to wait to have first jab until I’m out of the 1st trimester... going to chat to the midwife and GP about it but advice seems to vary in different areas from what I’ve read!

mlj123 · 19/05/2021 21:50

My vaccine went well. I had it last week I had no side effects except for a sore arm. But was back in work the next day with no problems. Thanks all for the advice

Thanks for sharing that video @TruelyWonder. I’m having my vaccination next week and was having a bit of a wobble but feel better after watching that 😊

Smurftastic · 24/05/2021 13:33

I had my first dose on Pfizer on Thursday. My only side effect was a slightly sore arm, but only when I lifted it. It went away after less than a day. Much less painful than my whooping cough jab. Baby's still happily kicking away.

choccrumpet · 10/06/2021 15:41

Hi everyone, I found out I'm pregnant today and had my first Pfizer vaccine yesterday, when I suspected that I might be pregnant. I have a sore arm, nausea and maybe a tiny tiny fever as I keep sweating on and off randomly. But otherwise feeling fine and I'm glad I got it

Melvin2021 · 02/07/2021 10:26

Good info on here! I'm definitely getting my vaccine due to the American data and the fact there has been not 1 safety concern, however I was going to get my first at 16 weeks do you all think this is a decent time to get it?
