Anyone else taking part? I'm booked in for Tuesday am. I'm over 30 group so 2 in 3 chance of getting the trial vaccine and 1 in 3 chance of getting AstraZeneca.

Yes, I have my appointment tomorrow! Both nervous and excited in equal measure! If the screening goes well, I’ll be fully vaccinated by 5th June (both doses) so I am a little concerned about how many antibodies I’ll have left come the winter (I believe current advice is vaccines are definitely effective for 6 months). I plan to ask about eligibility for booster jabs in winter

Ooh good luck, please come back and let me know what to expect on the first appointment. I'm quite excited but yes nervous a bit as well.

Hello! Good luck for next week - there are a few of us on a thread here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4234957-Valneva-trial

I had my first dose on Tuesday - I'm under 30 so it was definitely Valneva. Have felt fine since, very minor headache the morning after.

In terms of what to expect, my appointment took a bit longer than anticipated, but it was their first day and I imagine things will now be more organised. Had a few different tests and spent quite a while talking things through with the Dr. They take quite a lot of blood so I would bring a drink and snack. I also had to give a urine sample and a LFT/antibody blood prick test.

Great experience overall, everyone very friendly and excited to be working on the trial.

Ah I didnt realise there was a thread, I will head over there now for a look. Drink and snack are a good shout as I'm heading straight to work afterwards.

@Valtrial17 - is that actually true? If you are under 30 (or I presume 40 now) & you do this trial, you won’t be given AZ placebo?! I don’t understand how blind trials can do that? Surely the point is that you don’t know what you’ve had..

valnevavaxx · 07/05/2021 15:58

It's not specifically marketed as a blind trial, it's just a trial to test the vaccine (and compare to AZ where safe). The AZ on over 30s isn't a 'placebo' because it's a real vaccine, whatever age is participating in the trial you definitely get a vaccine!

Valtrial17 · 07/05/2021 17:14

@HolmeH Yes it is true, although I don't know what will now happen with the latest announcement. It may be harder to recruit over 30s.

I believe it is a phase 2/3 trial. The phase 3 is the blind part comparing the immune response of Val with AZ (in over 30s). They will still look at the immune response of the under 30s, and importantly side effects, but I doubt will statistically compare to the over 30 blind AZ part of the trial.

Disclaimer I am not a scientist.

I don't think the trial will be giving all under 30s valneva and over AZ. Otherwise there data will be really limited. The study maybe allowed to have different rules.
