Is this a covid 'election'? So many people queuing to vote!

I always vote. At nearly all local elections I am the only one in the polling station. At the General Election between 5-8pm there might be a queue of 5 or 6 people.

I have been out to vote twice tonight and come home as the queue is so long. They were allowing 4 in the Parish Hall at a time then the queue was down the steps and around into the high street with 20+ people queuing!

It is good that people are voting. Are people using this election to send a message to the government about how they have handled the Covid pandemic? Are have local politics just got really interesting?!

How long are the queues in your area?

Our area had five different ballot papers: parish, district and county councillors, the bollocks police commissioner and a local referendum. That probably slowed things down and I probably didn't help as I'm very against the police commissioner post and wrote an essay on my ballot paper to let them know Grin

I always vote, didn’t bother this year. Every time I know it’s pointless as the Conservative candidate will win, usually I do it anyway, today I just thought fuck it.

I voted and was the only person there the staff said they had never known such a quiet Election Day. They were beyond bored.

I've been 4 times today to our local polling station to take various relatives. There was only 2 people there at the same time once, the other three times there was nobody there.

It's usually deserted when I go to vote - even when there's a general election.

DH went to vote this afternoon and had to queue for 30 mins just to get in. I went at 7.30pm and it took an hour just to get to the building's entrance.

They were only allowing one person/household in at a time. There were also only two booths available to vote in, so households of more than 2 adults had to wait even when they were finally inside the building.

When I eventually left, there were another 15 - 20 people still in the queue.

I went earlier than usual hoping for a quiet time as I can't cope with face coverings. In and out within a couple of minutes. The real difference was different exit/ entry points and not going through the main building.

Mine was just local council and police commissioners. Neither of which have much to do with the Covid response so that's irrelevant to my decision making.
About as far as I can stretch it is that the council have supported a very effective vaccine distribution system for my area, and things like maximising outdoor opportunities for hospitality.

I frequently vote for different parties on the same day for different elections. You really can't infer much ftom one scale to another.

Only me when I went early afternoon.

PinkBuffalo · 06/05/2021 23:20

I went after I got home from work. I was the only one there

DuesToTheDirt · 06/05/2021 23:23

The queue was way too long and annoying given that it's been pouring with rain most of the day!

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/05/2021 23:28

Longest I’ve ever seen here. Tiny village, only one person in the polling station at a time which slowed it down a bit but not much and there were 12 people waiting at 4pm and handfuls coming down the road to vote.

greenlynx · 06/05/2021 23:44

DH and I went to vote after dropping DD to school so it’s about 9.30 am. There were no one else, I mean voters. Another man came in when we’re leaving.

I've had a postal vote for years. I don't understand why everyone doesn't. What's so fantastic about using a stub of a pencil in a wooden booth.

UrbanRambler · 07/05/2021 02:00

I usually vote but decided not to this time, as I was concerned about the lack of ventilation and possibility of high viral load in the cramped portakabin (normally only 1 door and no windows). Maybe they used a bigger portakabin this year (?) but it looked the same size as previously, when I walked past it the day before. Labour normally dominate our council, but perhaps the successful vaccine rollout will sway things towards the tories this time?

LavendulaAngustifolia · 07/05/2021 02:32

I was the only person there this afternoon. The staff looked bored. I got to keep my pencil because I forgot to bring one with me.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 07/05/2021 02:59

Zero queue. Was the only one there. At 7pm.

My school hall (different city) is also used as a station. Zero queues all day from what I could see

Torvean · 07/05/2021 03:29

Longer queue for the post office than the polling station. No queue outside polling place. Only about 4 voters inside. Waited 30 seconds for a polling booth, that was it.

I have up - tried on way to work and way home. I normally walk straight in on way. My colleague who lives in the road, said she could see it was still busy later when I messaged her to check.

SquirmOfEels · 07/05/2021 08:04

There was no queue as usual as mine

The only time there has been was Brexit referendum
