Covid

School closed due to 100 cases!

A 900 capacity school has closed due to 100 covid cases. I find it really hard to comprehend how this has happened when community transmission is so low at the minute!

Oh - and the latter cases were picked up as the children returned to school then it wasn't due to being in school > its was due to local mixing in houses etc

I will be interested to see how many of the positive cases on the lateral flow also get a positive on the PCR test.

We had 3 cases in school a few weeks ago of positive lateral flows but then a negative PCR meaning they ended isolation and returned to school along with the 40 other students who were close contacts.

If you look at the comments in the local online paper there is a direct link to a family holding a party for their son knowing their daughter had tested positive for Covid and not telling anyone

probably also using the "they are in a bubble at school so it doesn't matter if they mix all the time out of school" cliche

@BustopherPonsonbyJones but those who are vulnerable or above 45 will of been
It is not the only profession at risk and age plays a big part so it makes sense how it has been done and is going well
I know couple teachers who are in 20's who don't even wang to have a vaccination

Teachers are moving from classroom to classroom multiple times a day. I think it's crazy they haven't been vaccinated for everyone's sake.

It’s not alone. A large secondary school local to me had almost half its students at home isolating until last week and another local school has sent a whole year group home this week for 10 days. We need to get the teachers vaccinated and ASAP

I couldn't help thinking it's a small school for a secondary too. All of those round here are more than twice that size. My nephews go to a 4000 pupils plus school.

At the start, when everyone was saying it was easier to administer by age, I agreed with you.

Then the social care list came out and lollipop ladies/men were on it, as were life coaches and art therapists etc. Such a joke. Then people started to lie about being carers until that loophole closed end of March. Then people much younger were called for their vaccine very early than the over 45s you mention (18 year olds in Wales for example, whilst people in their 40s still not done), even if they worked from home and still, there were unvaccinated schools staff going in daily facing some risk.
The over 45s you mention only started being vaccinated a week or so ago and the over 40s pretty much this week. So no real immunity yet anyway for current outbreaks such as this.

It is wonderful so many have been vaccinated (and I was today, for which I am grateful) but it has been very stressful to be working in schools the past few months unvaccinated, watching those get vaccinated who technically should not have done according to the official schedule. The WHO did recommend educators get vaccinated in the first phase after all, so there is some reasoning to it beyond ‘those damn teachers just whinging again’.

Also looks like they are gearing up to abandon masks in classrooms before teachers and parents are vaccinated. Against scientific advice.

Dh is 49 and has had his first vaccine less than a week ago. Another two weeks for some protection to kick in, and another 10+ weeks before vaccine #2.
I keep hearing how everyone over 45/50 is protected - they simply aren't, and he has been working in schools for a month now since Easter. It's a myth.

@Whitestick my dh just had his as well and also been working throughout in peoples homes multiple ones so has also been at risk , plus we have dc in school , college who also could bring home
I still think age / certain conditions is the biggest risk so this has been done the best and quickest way

@ChloeDecker i never said damn teachers winging at all , and I agree some on the list are silly and yes im with you that some areas seem to far ahead and even same area
My area my 50 year old friend was called for vaccine before my 67 year old dad, as it happened they had on same day same centre in the end , but some gp surgeries further ahead
But then I think its a huge challenge and someone would always be left out so whilst not perfect it has done well
My friend works at a special school and is in her 30's and was vaccinated months ago as they were prioritised

It would be interesting to find out:
Which varient it is
Whether the school has a big outbreak or lots of outbreaks before Christmas

As well as things listed above.

I think the lateral flow tests are useful to try and catch cases even if not 100% effective. (Or anywhere near that) at least they are looking for it now.

I am hoping that kids school is somewhat protected by herd immunity having had several outbreaks in the Autumn term.

@BlackeyedSusan yes lots of questions and lots to be learned from this I suspect
Hopefully all are ok and recover quickly and the spread is contained

@WaverleyPirate anyone who has a child at school is also at risk from a child bringing it home, my son also moves from classroom to classroom multiple times a day ,
Hopefully the vaccinations keep going quickly and many more are vaccinated asap

I wonder if it's one of the 48 places with a B16172 cluster?

As far as I know the school had an average number of cases before the last lockdown and since going back. My DC has never had to self isolate and I only personally knew one child who had had it up until now.

I think it’s disgraceful how teachers haven’t been a priority from the start to be vaccinated. I know quite a few people who have jumped the queue saying they are unpaid carers for people when they haven’t been. Boasting about it like my neighbour who hadn’t stuck to the rules from the start, but that’s another story.

I was going by the news headlines in tomorrows newspapers. Government seems to be considering abandoning masks in classrooms.
