Well this is worrying...

Seychelles have vaccinated over 60% of the population with two doses and have gone back into lockdown measures as cases are rising again.

They have used the Chinese developed vaccine, same as Chile, which is estimated to be only around 50% effective. Sad for them, but not worrying for us.

They're using 'different' Chinese vaccines. Sinopharm in Seychelles and SinoVac in Chile.

It's actually working in Chile, they just released the brakes a bit too early on their lockdown - see this thread (it's actually a very positive thread and not long so might be worth reading anyway) : twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1389617547935420423

So I don't know if there's a difference in the quality between the two - I think Sinopharm is made by a state-owned company, SinoVac is from a private company.

@NewLevelsOfTiredness thanks for the extra info Smile

Also need to consider how much natural immunity do Seychelles have? A low herd immunity coupled with a less effective vaccine with 40% of the population unvaccinated is a completely different situation to the UK with high natural immunity and high vaccination rates with more effective vaccines.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 05/05/2021 14:28

I saw the headline and was really worried.

Now I see they are using the Chinese vaccine I'm not worried anymore. Thanks!

www.cnbc.com/2021/01/25/covid-vaccine-travel-seychelles-is-open-to-vaccinated-visitors.html Yes, it looks as though the Seychelles had next to no COVID until very recently, so very little pre-existing natural immunity; most likely, the zero-COVID countries (China, Australia, NZ, Vietnam etc.) will need to ensure high vaccination rates with a really effective vaccine, because there is little pre-existing immunity for the vaccines to mesh with. 62% jabbed with sino-vax crap probably isn't going to cut it.

As long as they vax with Pfizer, AZ or similar and manage to jab most people including a high percentage of kids, I am sure all countries will be fine.

China must be panicking a bit now. It does look like the sino-vaxes do not provide enough immunity to keep the virus at bay. Therefore, China has a choice of either using mostly foreign vaccines (=losing face) or allowing some spread of COVID within China after trumpeting China's zero-COVID credentials (=also losing face).

Cookerhood · 05/05/2021 14:59

China are only allowing people in if they have had one of their vaccinations, I believe!

Kokeshi123 · 05/05/2021 15:01

I think they said that at first but have been backpedaling a bit since then. Although I hear that in HK, where people are being offered a choice of vaccine, those who actually care about infection are getting Pfizer and those who think they'll need to travel to mainland China for their job are getting the sino-vax just to be on the safe side...

It's still on the Chinese embassy website (& gov.uk) Please be noted that the above-mentioned visa facilitation applies only to applicants who have been inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines produced in China, having either received two doses of Chinese-made vaccines with the stipulated gap in between, or received a single-dose Chinese-made vaccine at least 14 days prior to the application, and obtained the vaccination certificate.
Cornettoninja · 05/05/2021 20:52

According to Wikipedia they only have one hospital (happy to be corrected on this) so I’m guessing their tolerance for cases is much lower than ours and they need a much higher threshold of the population with immunity than we do since no vaccine is 100% effective.

Looking at their case numbers, they rose extremely sharply so I can see why they’ve reacted so dramatically. Hopefully the vaccine they have been using will reduce the severity of the disease so the dramatic rise in deaths won’t automatically follow.

@cherrytea53 do you look for things to worry about before checking the facts and trying to get other people worried too? Had enough of this shit.

This thread hasn’t been posted on since Thursday!!! Who exactly is ‘looking’ for things to get riled up about here?

unchienandalusia · 08/05/2021 10:33

@Cornettoninja so sorry dear. Been v busy with work and catching up on mumsnet at the weekend. That ok with you?

Cornettoninja · 08/05/2021 10:43

I don’t give a shit where you post @unchienandalusia. I was simply struck by the hypocrisy of your post popping up on my feed. That okay with you?

RainbowCrayons · 08/05/2021 14:20

The WHO just approved the Sinopharm vaccine. They think islts about 79% effective, although they have limited data on the effectiveness in older people.

It will be interesting to see what is behind the Seychelles recent spike.

Article in the Independent looking into the Seychelles situation says that 40% of vaccine doses used there were actually AstraZeneca. It gives a few other reasons why they have this outbreak:
