Dh got strong positive result from lateral flow tests last night. Whole household has done pcr tests today- waiting for results. He had to go to bed feeling ill at lunchtime and has been really shaking and feeling very cold this afternoon. He is mid 40s, generally healthy and has had first vaccine a month ago.
I’m very worried though as he has had two previous episodes (both years ago now) when he has been hospitalised with flu. I’m really concerned for him, the other episodes were scary (he was delirious both times, ended up on a drip) and they were just “regular” flu. I’m making sure he drinks plenty and monitoring temp and we have an oximeter too. I just want to make sure I do everything I can to keep him safe and well through this. I hardly slept at all last night.

If he’s had one dose I’m sure he’ll be fine.

He’s got good protection from his first dose OP. It stops the vast amount of serious illness & death. He may feel pretty rotten for a short while but fingers crossed, that’ll be all!

Thank you. I know he is so much better off from having had at least one dose. Our second dose was supposed to be this week and we’ve had to cancel it. Rates are generally so low now and we have had to work all through this pandemic so I guess I just thought we were very unlikely to get it now. Not mentally prepared for the possibility.

If it makes you feel any better I was in hospital with flu about 6 years ago. I was so poorly! I had covid 2 months ago and it was so mild. Flu wad much worse for me. Hope your DH is okay. We also used an oximetre which was really reassuring.

Smithermetimbers · 04/05/2021 18:12

Thank you, @OliveTree75 that does make me feel better. Those flu episodes have always bothered me since. Just the worry that an otherwise perfectly healthy person can go downhill that quickly, he was much younger then too of course. We also had a horrible episode with dd when she was a baby and became suddenly very ill. Plus in more recent times lost a couple of friends out of the blue. So I guess that’s why I’m panicking now.

I know someone who spent a week in hospital this autumn with every known viral complication due to an infection. Got COVID in the surge and was fine. She contacted her GP after the positive test and was prescribed antibiotics and given an oximeter and advice. Up and about in a week.

Yes I echo what others say. I have bad asthma from even a head cold and am totally floored by flu. However Covid was a light cold for me after two days. It has its own rules.

Smithermetimbers · 04/05/2021 19:17

Thank you, this is all reassuring. I’m not normally a worrier at all but this situation is getting to me.

They're TOTALLY different illnesses - the only commonality is that they both effect the respiratory system to varying extents.

So the fact he had bad reactions to flu, doesn't really mean anything with regard to covid.

My son was put in intensive care by flu when he was 3. He had covid over Xmas and just sneezed a few times. He is also asthmatic m. Fingers crossed your DH feels better soon.

Good points and his issues with the flu weren’t at all respiratory-related. More fever and vomiting leading to dehydration. I know nausea and diarrhoea can be part of covid but hopefully he won’t get any actual vomiting.

Hope he feels better soon, OP. It's rare to get seriously ill several weeks after the vaccine.
