When will kids be allowed to just have a cold again?

Snotty, phlegm. No temp. But school sent child home and can't go back til PCR comes back. So I'll be off too while my A level and GCSE classes are mid-assessments. At what point are we going to move the goalposts on this and remember that kids get colds that aren't Covid? What's the point of vaccinating if we're still going to have to isolate etc?

I've been wondering when isolating will stop.

billybagpuss · 04/05/2021 12:49

Hopefully we’re almost at a point where they can do a lateral flow test there and then and keep them at school.

Woeismethischristmas · 04/05/2021 12:49

I took my kids for a test this weekend when they came down with a cold. I didn’t think they had COVID and it was negative. Can’t take time off though and didn’t want school to send them home.

HugeAckmansWife · 04/05/2021 12:50

So why not do that now? Either lfts are worth doing or they're a colossal waste.

My 3 year old has a cough but is very well. Now we are all home. My 4 year old desperately needs to be in preschool as he's not ready for school in September. I get it but it's frustrating. Hope the get results overnight!

Abraxan · 04/05/2021 12:52

When the rules change for the general population the rules will change for schools too.

It shouldn't change before as not all the school adults are vaccine protected plus there are CEV/cv staff and pupils in schools, plus some have vulnerable families at home.

When it's deemed 'safe' enough for everyone it will be 'safe' enough in schools too.

Undersnatch · 04/05/2021 12:54

We haven’t had this, I think school have been sensible for a long while now about day to day colds, it’s only if there’s a proper cough they’d send home.

Abraxan · 04/05/2021 12:54

What's the point of vaccinating if we're still going to have to isolate etc?

When more people are vaccinated then we can stop isolation. Lots of people haven't had one vaccine yet let alone two.

There would be uproar if isolation stopped for only those fully vaccinated, especially if not all adults had been at least offered their first.

My son 7, was off school all last week as he had a cold. Cough, snots, sore throat but no temperature, still had to get him a covid test and send the (negative) results in to the school.

Abraxan · 04/05/2021 12:56

How do school know what a Covid cough is like?

Mine was more like a throat clearing cough every so often. I was ill enough with Covid to be in hospital.

Roonerspismed · 04/05/2021 12:58

My school has been more sensible. DD has a cold with a slight cough and she stayed at school.

I do agree though. We had one covid death yesterday and yet hundreds of kids are kept off school

Oysterbabe · 04/05/2021 13:05

Both of mine have had colds recently and stayed at school and nursery without it causing an issue.

It's 3 bouts in 24 hours, isn't it? Or one or more sustained coughing sessions.
HugeAckmansWife · 04/05/2021 13:10

The thing is, leaving aside the impact on the child, there is an impact on the caring adults and their employers - their patience and tolerance is going to run out soon - there's only so many times you can be off and jobs need to be don. If it doesn't matter that you are off, you may as well not have a job. I think this needs addressing but I've not heard any talk about ending the isolation rules or relaxing guidance to schools

and my DS really doesn;t have symptoms, absolutely NOT anything like a continuous cough - I'd had to lie on the form to get him a test because school won;t let him back without one.

@HugeAckmansWife

My school is so desperate For teachers I was told to come in whilst kid was awaiting a covid test result- as sent home from nursery

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 04/05/2021 13:13

I don't think this is a universal policy. DC1 had a heavy cold in the Autumn - very snotty, catarrh, watering eyes, but no cough or temperature. School were entirely comfortable with her being in.

Santastealer · 04/05/2021 13:16

I’ve had to keep my son off nursery today because he has a cough caused by a nasal drip from the cold he has. If I send him to nursery Will will send him home and request a negative PCR test before he can return. He isn’t there till next Monday now anyway and I’m not putting him through a test when I know he doesn’t need one. He has sensory issues and it would be very traumatic for him.

Nikki305 · 04/05/2021 13:30

My 2 are off nursery today while we wait for results. They both have a cold but are coughing too.
My 3 year old now has a phobia of anyone going near her nose. The test is very frightening for little ones. I hope once all adults have been offered a vaccination they leave little kids alone and let their lives go back to normal. We can't afford to be testing them every few weeks. Kids at nursery are ill all the time!

HolmeH · 04/05/2021 13:32

Went for lunch with a friend on Sunday who is a primary teacher. She told me that the previous weekend she’d met a pal for a walk outdoors. They’d walked side by side, not really distanced but not super close. Said friend test positive for covid on the Monday. My friends head teacher said as they’d met outdoors & hadn’t hugged, she didn’t need to isolate 🤷🏼‍♀️ So she’s been in teaching her yr1 class all week (taking LF’s obviously)..

She said she felt a bit of a fraud as the school would send kids home for close contact but seemingly she was OK 🙈

All fine though, no covid. She did a PCR test at 10 days out of curiosity!

Vebrithien · 04/05/2021 13:36

It is a complete pain, I agree.

However, DD started to cough Sat evening. I'd booked her for a test Sunday morning, and we had the negative result back within 13 hours. Whilst it would have been a day off of school, it is still much better than the awful situation back on September, where we couldn't get a test for any point in the next week, so DD just had to stay off of school for the 14 days.

wendz86 · 04/05/2021 13:46

Our school let them in with a cold . Sent my youngest in with one today . If they have a temp or persistent cough we’d have to get them tested .

HazeyJaneII · 04/05/2021 14:01

My ds has shielded all year, he is now back at school, obviously not vaccinated, I hope that the precautions taken now stay for a while longer.

AnnaSW1 · 04/05/2021 14:07

Mine are in nursery with cold symptoms now. No issue. They caught the cold off another child there!
