Getting a second dose of AZ earlier than 12 weeks.

I understand that the national protocol for the AZ jab recommends a minimum of 28 days for the second dose whilst the established practice is 12 weeks in order to maximize the population that have at least one dose. My second dose is scheduled for 7th July and online there is no leeway for modifying the appointment. You need to cancel the appointment and then take your (unknown) chances of getting a second appointment. Has anyone had any experience of shortening the period - would ringing them up help?

The reason for us wanting to change the dates is that a family event has arisen on that date and I would rather get jabbed earlier if at all possible. If so would be happier having say a 6 week gap rather than the 12.

Yes I am hoping that things will be a little different in June...

Many thanks for all the very insightful and helpful responses. I'll contact my GP on e-consult politely and explain the situation and see if there is any standby that I could get on that wouldn't compromise others' first jabs. No harm in asking.

My husband has just been called for his second dose of AZ, just a couple of days over 8 weeks mark! Our surgery has asked anyone over the age of 31 to get in touch to book their first dose. I’m 45 and had my first dose 3.5 weeks ago.

The AZ needs time to build up antibodies. Hence the 8 to 12 week gap. I would not get the second until at least 8 weeks even if allowed earlier. The longer gap will make it more effective. My husband had the text for his second dose at 8 weeks. Seems to vary depending where you are.

My DH also had a text today from GP to receive his second AZ jab at 8 weeks. Not really sure why as lots of under 40s still waiting for first.

Protocol where I am is no 2nd jab under 10 weeks, even for people undergoing urgent medical treatment.

I was offered a second jab 7 weeks after my first .k.

...oops posted too soon
It was AZ by a GP clinic.

Hi there. Interested in this as DP (53) has been invited by surgery for his second dose of AZ and it will be just 8 weeks. Having looked at the guidance online, NHS is clearly recommending 11-12wk gap (I think because of efficacy not just in order to get everyone done). DP is worried that if he doesn't take up the GP offer now that he might miss his opportunity. On balance, if you were offered the second jab at 8 weeks would you take it up? Better to just get it done and have the advantage of being fully vaccinated or better to ignore the offer and hope to get something in c. 3 weeks and maximise the efficacy? (Should add, very grateful to be in this position).

I think you are best to ring your GP. I was invited by GP for 2nd (10 weeks) but if I wanted to book via the NHS website it will only allow me to book from 12 weeks. Despite the GP link I was sent has let me book from 10 weeks on.
