Exercise & taking ibuprofen after vaccine questions

I got my AZ 1st jab on Wednesday. I had the chills yesterday, and an ever so slight muggy head today, but almost nothing really to report. Two qs please for mumsnet.

I have a group ride cycle planned tomorrow - its a challenging ride for me - should this be avoided so soon after the vaccine?

And secondly - my period is due and the only painkiller that works is nurofen plus. I take it for one day to stop the shivers and pain. How soon after the jab can it be taken? Anyone know? Many thanks.

It's fine to take ibuprofen straight after the vaccine. I've had two doses and asked this. When I had my first it was around day three that I felt tired, so you might struggle.

Hi @Ponoka7 thanks. Thought ibuprofen was to be avoided?? Interesting you were told otherwise.

Yea, it’s my energy to that’s a bit off... I don’t mind pushing myself but don’t want to make myself feel ten times worse!

I also asked about ibuprofen when I had my AZ jab- they said it was absolutely fine to take it. The only reason they say paracetamol generally is that it is more effective bringing down a temperature.
I had no side effects whatsoever after my jab so can’t advise on the other question.

Both are fine, I took ibuprofen and codeine after mine (which I take normally anyway) and exercised the evening after the jab. No one told me I couldn't do either. I just rested when the wave of exhaustion hit me (my one and only side effect)

PumpingPamela · 01/05/2021 06:27

No reason why you can't take ibuprofen I don't think. I think there was something early on about ibuprofen being no good if you actually had covid but I'm pretty sure that was debunked.. definitely fine with the vaccine anyway.

Personally I felt rough one day after, better the next, and shit again on day three.. if you go on the bike ride can someone pick you up if you start to feel bad?

UseOfWeapons · 01/05/2021 06:40

Ibuprofen fine to take, can’t advise about the bike ride...after both my 1st and 2nd dose (Pfizer), I was working out at the gym within 48 hours as our workplace one remained open, appointments only, 1 person at a time. .
I felt very tired after my vaccinations, but otherwise ok. If I’d had a temperature, I probably wouldn’t have gone to the gym,
It really depends on how you feel, and how long the ride is.
Good luck!

I reckon you have to go with how you feel about the ride.

Go if you feel up for it.

We get a lot of exercise and jab didn't change our routines, but we had only (barely) sore arm side effects, anyway. DH cycled ~90 miles on day he got his jab.

I had mine on Monday. Just felt tired with aches on Monday night. Felt better by Tuesday and have been running a couple of times since. Challenging hill run yesterday. I would listen to your body.

UnaOfStormhold · 01/05/2021 09:01

I had mine on Wednesday too, felt rubbish on Thursday but fine today and am planning a run this morning. If you feel OK I'd have a go, maybe take extra snacks etc in case you need an energy boost and make sure you have a bail-out plan if it's not working for you.

Mumski45 · 01/05/2021 09:07

Listen to your body and how you feel. If you do go on the bike ride than make sure you have a back up plan in case you run out of energy. I cycle lots and there is no way I could have done a challenging ride the day after. I went to bed for the afternoon which I haven't done since I was pregnant 14 years ago but it could be totally different for you.

I had my first AZ second week of March. Felt fine afterwards, really tired that evening and for the next day and mild flu-like symptoms for the day after as well. Only exercise I did for about 48 hours was dog walking but totally back to normal after that. You need to take a view on the day though imo, as you can see from here, people are having varying reactions.

I've had both doses, no one told me I couldn't/shouldn't exercise after either. After second dose I started a strenuous hill walk within an hour,

Whereismymojo · 01/05/2021 13:20

Great, thanks for all the replies! I think I was fretting that exercise might make my lurking side effects worsen. Anyway I got out and did 45km (not world beating but good for me!) this morning and I really enjoyed it. I took two nurofen plus also as I just can’t be shivering away with period Wink

Nice one OP.

I had mine on a Thursday evening. Muzzy Fri am, total energy drain around lunchtime while on a gentle 1k walk, spend rest of day in bed. Took it easy on the Sat, 5mi walk on Sunday, HM on Mon, admittedly at a gentle Jeff, and done as a compass (4 out and back legs so never more than 3mi from the car)
