Nursery Refusing to Reapply Sunscreen

LilyMyOneAndOnly · 29/04/2021 15:33

Our nursery (2-4 year age range) has notified parents that they must send children to nursery wearing a 12 hour sunscreen as they will no longer be able to reapply it at nursery due to covid.

I am concerned as I don't think there is much evidence to support the all-day or 12-hour sunscreen effectiveness (Which? article below) plus it often gets sweated or rubbed/washed off.

Is this now standard policy for nurseries or should I challenge them?

I use p20 factor 30 or 50 on ds as he's allergic to all the other creams I've tried. I've only ever re-applied abroad on holiday when he's in and out the pool / sea I'd then re-apply at lunchtime. Never any redness or pinkness. It needs to be applied generously and left to dry for 20 minutes before dressing.

My sons nursery is happy to re-apply suncream though. I'd take a dim view of a nursery who wouldn't do basic personal care for small children.

This sounds like Covid is being used as an excuse for 'we don't want the hassle of applying sunscreen'. Don't they ever do water play or wash faces after meal time etc? Because if they do the sunscreen should be reapplied after.

Ours is an outdoor nursery and my daughter only goes for morning but they reapply sunscreen in that time!

As I understand it, very few (if any) market as all day. Most say 8 hours. The advice on the bottle we use is:
One application allows for up to 8 hours sun exposure and 1 hours water exposure*
• Reapply if more time is spent in the water
• This product is designed for normal wear but should be reapplied after towelling dry or other abrasive contact

So, really, if using factor 50 and applying for an 8am drop off, there shouldn't be any obvious issues, ensuring the above and wearing a hat etc.

Have you tried to keep a hat on a baby/toddler? Both of mine hate(d) hats. My eldest would immediately remove it until she turned 3. Now she loves hats thankfully. Nursery used to tell us every single day that they couldn’t keep a hat on her 🙈 My youngest is 13 months, same thing. She’s much fairer than big sister as well, it’s a nightmare!

We have used UltraSun (and P20) all day sun cream for several years, since 19y Dd was a young child. We've used it all over the world including in very hot and humid climates, such as Orlando in the summer.

None of us have ever burnt using it.

They also come in different strengths and there are special face ones, etc if needed.

Nursery normally supply but they have asked us to bring in a labelled bottle which is fine. They have always been really hot on sunscreen. I wouldn’t be happy for them not to reapply at that age. My eldest is in reception and I’ve moved to an all day sunscreen but she’s come home a bit pink so it does worry me that they don’t seem to have time or space to take their own in and apply (I understand the teacher can’t do 30 kids).

I take my niece to nursery some days and they've implemented the same rule. They actually asked me to come in and reapply her sunscreen at lunchtime.

Our nursery always re-applied, they did so that you provided some though.
