Cynical? 'Oxford taken out of AstrZeneca?

Emma2021 · 28/04/2021 09:56

When the Oxford AstraZeneca jab first approved for UK use it was banging on about 'Oxford' but recent 3 weeks the news on tv, radio, papers etc hardly or never mention the word 'Oxford'.

Is it just me or you too have noted that?

It doesn't have university in the title either... or the name of the scientists who created it -- I mean really it should be called the Andy Pollard & Sarah Gilbert Oxford University Astra Zeneca jab should it not?

But it's a bit of a mouthful...so

So, can you direct me to when it was being banged on about under that title. Don't worry this is a rehtortical question and I guess the best you could do.

I haven't noticed that at all. The BioNtech-Pfizer jab has been known as Pfizer for months though.

bookworm1632 · 28/04/2021 10:30

I beg your pardon OP - clearly you're right and this is all a heinous conspiracy, no doubt trumped up by a bunch of leftist, wokist, BLM types, busy censoring Oxford due to some connection with the slave trade.

JassyRadlett · 28/04/2021 10:31

Yes, it’s nearly as big a conspiracy as BioNTech being taken out of Pfizer. What are the Germans hiding??!!!!

FlattestWhite · 28/04/2021 10:35

It's just like most people here called it 'coronavirus' when it first started, and other places used 'covid', and now everyone just says 'covid', because it's easier to say and it's taken over as the main word for it.

Some people said 'Oxford jab', some said 'AstraZeneca' or AZ, and gradually that one has taken over too.

Combination of media, social media, ease of saying/writing etc. just means that one term ends up preferred - not because anyone has deliberately set out to do that.

Schulte · 28/04/2021 13:27

‘ Yes, it’s nearly as big a conspiracy as BioNTech being taken out of Pfizer. What are the Germans hiding??!!!!’

Actually, the Germans still call it Biontech Grin

Oxford AstraZeneca is just too much of a mouthful, no?

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 28/04/2021 13:38

Op I’m curious what do you think is going on with dropping “Oxford”

ImTheWolfToday · 28/04/2021 14:05

Language develops, some things stick others don’t. Other than the side effect issue much of the news has around the EU’s dispute with AZ the company (as opposed to Oxford University) so it’s not that surprising that AZ is the one that’s stuck really.

Or it’s a big massive conspiracy of course...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/04/2021 14:08

Oxford developed it so at the research and development stage we mainly called it that, AZ are manufacturing and distributing it so now we call it that. No mystery at all.

Ormally · 28/04/2021 17:01

AZ has a number of sites in the UK (and all over), it's not just ringfenced to Oxford now it's out of the research stage.

Yes. The EU isn't sueing Oxford University for more supply. It's taking legal action against AZ.

They're desperate for it. Many countries are, which is unsurprising given the global shortage of vaccines and the raw materials needed to make them.

Thanks for asking. IMHO it is the same reason our jokers in number 10 dropped the "world leading" bits out of covid testing

Stop being paranoid mate. I just asked a question for myself and not those your stated, nor for you and those talking about "conspiracy" etc. FYI, I'm a relaist and no clown of a government or a bunch of clowns will change my mind.

The bottom line, in anyone from any affliation tells me something i beleive in even if its a donkey, I'll go for that.

Thankfully, I belong to no polticial, civil, religoius party or anyhting but I do belong to the hard pressed taxparyers

Matt Hancock has literally just called it ‘Oxford AstraZenica’ in the press conference.

I honestly don’t think there’s anything other than convenience in shortening the title.

TeeBee · 28/04/2021 17:41

It's actually called Vaxzevria (Covishield in some places). AZ hold the marketing authorisation; Oxford university helped develop it but don't hold marketing rights, hence their name is longer included.

JassyRadlett · 28/04/2021 20:57

Actually, the Germans still call it Biontech

That’s brilliant! I didn’t know that. Grin

So what’s going on with Janssen/Johnson & Johnson then? I can’t help noticing everyone’s ditching the Janssen bit?

TeeBee · 29/04/2021 10:55

Janssen is a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson.

goldwallpaperisgross · 29/04/2021 11:01

Strangely enough the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine was referred to on the news this morning simply as the BioNTech vaccine (I think this was by the vaccines minister?).

Also, with regard to the AZ vaccine, it is also fun that when the news about the vaccine is good, it is called a British/English company, but when it is bad it is called a British/English-Swedish company. The Swedish bit only gets added in for bad news and is always dropped for good news.

ChAdOx1 nCoV-19

COMIRNATY, tozinameran, BNT162b2

mRNA-1273, CX-024414

JNJ-78436735, Ad26.COV2.S JNJ-78436735 Ad26COVS1 VAC31518

It's endless really

Rockbird · 29/04/2021 21:46

Every so often we get a thread asking for people's favourite words. Vaccines were made for me, I love the sound of BioNTech and AstraZeneca. Moderna does nothing for me though...

lljkk · 29/04/2021 21:50

JK Rowling should invent some good vaccine names (since she already invented a vaccine professor, harhar)

Stupendia...
GetBetterums...
Nazzalallia....
StopCovidia...

Someone I know mentioned this to me too - it is apparently doing the rounds on the conspiracy websites/forums.

Oxford University have demanded that AstraZeneca drop the "Oxford" from the name of the jab as they don't want their name tarnished by being associated with a jab which is SO dangerous and killing people by their millions.

Total bollocks, obviously.

MarshaBradyo · 30/04/2021 09:29

Easier to say

If you look at these boards we and many others switched from coronavirus to Covid after some time

MarshaBradyo · 30/04/2021 09:31

I saw a sponsored post from Oxford University on my Instagram feed recently about their vaccine so I doubt they’re hiding it.

The comments were shocking though. One step below portion of this site.
