Vaccines and transmission

The news is good!

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/apr/28/single-dose-of-covid-vaccine-can-nearly-halve-transmission-of-virus-study-finds

So after a single dose of either Pfizer or AZ, people who test +ve for the virus are 38% to 49% less likely to pass it on to others.
This is on top of the 65% reduction in people testing +ve following a single jab.

Put the two together and it means that after one jab you're 60-68% LESS likely to infect others.

Obviously after 2 jabs, it will be higher still.

Oops - my maths wrong - it's actually 78.3 to 82.2% LESS likely to infect others.

This is great news- i'm surpised the media dont seem to be making more of it. The bbc website mentioned it but briefly.

DarceyDashwood · 28/04/2021 14:59

Great news! Hopefully will put a stop to all the “it won’t stop me getting it or passing it on” posts on here

Azuretwist · 28/04/2021 15:13

Fab! Imagine what the % will be with data with more second doses.

BlueBlancmange · 28/04/2021 15:19

It's excellent news!

TBH I think the reporters don't understand the data. The headline that they reduce transmission by up to 50% is technically correct, but as most people will be interested in the combined impact, i.e. "If a person has this jab, how much less of a risk do they pose...".

Even more weird given how critical this is to achieving herd immunity and a return to normality. With this high an impact, herd immunity is very much on the cards....

That’s very wishful thinking!

They must have known all along or strongly suspected that it would indeed stop people getting it and passing it on or there would have been no reason to vaccinate a healthy 30 year old doctor for example back in December. But it's great to see it confirmed anyway!

Of course but it was a useful tactic to use, otherwise there would have been a two tier society until everyone was vaccinated. Unfortunately some anti vaxxers see it as an excuse to give for refusing to have it.

But variants 😱

And Van Tam reckons really wave could be much less significant

UK close to 'bottom level' of COVID and third wave could be much less significant - Van-Tam http://news.sky.com/story/uk-close-to-bottom-level-of-covid-and-third-wave-could-be-much-less-significant-van-tam-12289647

The doom mongers are going to be out of a job.

Hettylala · 28/04/2021 18:54

That was meant to say third wave, not really wave!
