Jabs and thrombocytopenia

Hi...

Would appreciate some unbiased opinions!

I am 32 in June and of course haven't had my jab yet but my husband who is 43 had his a few weeks ago so I don't think mine is too far away.

My platelet count is normal but borderline and I have periods of low platelet counts. When I was pregnant I had bad thrombocytopenia, the first time it wasn't medicated, I lost over 2 litres of blood... the second time they had me on coagulant medication to stop me haemorrhaging, I still lost a litre of blood.

Anyway.., the advice says there are concerns about people taking the jab who have low platelet counts... usually just that they administer them in a medical environment in case of adverse reactions.

Should I mention my history when I am called for mine? I don't want to be a nuisance but equally want to be safe... I also want my jab! Thank you in advance.

You should ask your consultant or GP what is recommended given your particular medical history.

They will ask you beforehand and if it's a centre doing AZ they won't give it to you.
If you are in London, book in to Guy's vaccination centre 1 for this week if you can to get Moderna. Or they will find you a centre that's doing it

I could have written your post OP. I’m 43 and have been called for my jab now. Also have history of low platelets. Mainly pregnancy related where they dropped each time to around 50,000 at the end of pregnancy then went back up to around 130,000 so still classed as technically as low. I spoke to Gp and have been advised not to have the AZ and to wait for Pfeizer/Moderna to become available in next few weeks so that is what I shall do!

I think you should seek professional advice from specialists who know your medical history. Random people on the internet can't possibly tell you what is right for your particular circumstances.

I have weirdness with thrombocytopenia when I’m unwell.

I’ve chatted with my GP and he sent me for Pfizer.

Our hub is only using AZ so he organised the Pfizer jab through the surgery

I had to have a blood test before the jab, then another blood test every other day for the week following the jab.

All was fine

My dad has very low platelets (and pretty much non existent everything else, he has MDS) he had the AZ jab at a normal centre (and no side effects)

Professional advice is given when you go for the vaccine and you answer the questions. I know from experience that one of the questions specifically asks about history of thrombocytopenia. If answered 'yes' then a doctor review is triggered

I thought it wouldn’t matter as the thrombocytopenia after vaccine is a person’s weird reaction to it? Obviously mention it beforehand. What if you have the opposite problem borderline high platelets?

Wetcappuccino · 27/04/2021 13:50

I have had thrombocytopenia twice. My platelets are still on the low side of normal (120,000) and I had AZ. My consultant said the risks if I contract COVID would be greater. Ask your consultant as they know your particular medical history. But, to reassure you, I have had 2 doses of AZ and been fine.

You should definitely speak to your gp and arrange a vaccination through them. It is pointless to wait for the age related invitation to attend a vaccination centre, and to then tell them your history, as they will turn you away. In our area anyone with a health issue is being vaccinated by a gp led clinic, everyone else makes an appointment at a mass vaccination centre or a pharmacy for those who don't drive.

You should definitely enquire before having the vaccine. I would insist the GP ask a specialist.
