Wellbythebloodyhell · 27/04/2021 09:01

If you have an Allergy to penicillin which vaccine have you had? Has anyone been advised not to have a certain vaccine because of the Allergy?

Considering none of the vaccines have penicillin in them you can have any of them.

The guidance is only to avoid the vaccine if you've previously had a severe reaction to any of the ingredients in the vaccine.

CoffeeRunner · 27/04/2021 09:04

Any is fine. None are advised against with a penicillin allergy - for reasons stated above.

Crocidura · 27/04/2021 09:05

DH is allergic to penicillin and it didn't make any difference to which vaccine he had. He had AZ btw and was fine.

Hadalifeonce · 27/04/2021 09:06

My sister has a severe penicillin allergy, and had AZ for both of hers with no side affects.

Elieza · 27/04/2021 09:07

One of my relatives refused a vaccination as the liquid the vaccine is in us something from egg. Apparently. She is very allergic to eggs.

I thought the vaccine was vegan but I guess I was wrong.

LizzieSiddal · 27/04/2021 09:07

I’m allergic to penicillin. I was told by my Dr, that it makes no difference at all which one you have.

bonbonours · 27/04/2021 09:08

My mum was told to have Pfizer not AZ because she had previously had an anaphylactic reaction to something (she doesn't know what!). As in she actually went to the vaccine clinic and was told to go away and rebook at the surgery for Pfizer. Though everything I read says you can have either even if you have allergies.

LeoRatCat · 27/04/2021 09:13

I have a penicillin allergy and have just had AZ. We discussed before I had the jab and they advised as long as you didn't have severe anaphylaxis/carried an epipen then you were fine to have AZ.

A friend of DD's is allergic to eggs, she has the flu jab rather than nasal spray (primary age) because it has eggs in

Thanks its for my sister she has hers booked for next week via the online system so won't know what she's having until she gets there but is worried about being turned away due to her allergy if the vaccine on the day isn't suitable. Hopefully she will be fine to have whatever is offered

My MIL has had a severe reaction, and was refused the Pfizer and told to have the AZ

My Mum has a less major reaction and had the AZ.

Both were fine.

BunsyGirl · 27/04/2021 09:19

My dad has a severe penicillin allergy and he has had Pfizer (both does) with no problems.

BunsyGirl · 27/04/2021 09:19

B1rdinthebush · 27/04/2021 09:20

I'm allergic to penicillin and had the AZ. I had a severe reaction but have been told this is because I have an auto-immune disease rather than the allergy. She'll be fine.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 27/04/2021 09:27

I have 2 different anaphylactic allergies, wasps they were not worried about but cephalosporin meant I had to have AZ

I know that the flu vaccine has egg in it, but I am pretty sure that none of the Covid vaccines have egg in?

None of the covid vaccinations being given in the UK contain egg proteins. Some other vaccinations (non covid) sometimes do.

JustMeAndWheatley · 27/04/2021 17:30

A good friend of mine was refused the AZ vaccine because of her penicillin allergy. She had a severe reaction to it 15 years ago. Dh is also allergic but was given it (at a different vaccine centre). She was told they couldn’t risk it in case she went into anaphylactic shock. She’s now in limbo because they don’t know where she should go to have it.

JustMeAndWheatley · 27/04/2021 17:31

Fwiw dh had no reaction or side effects at all after his,

itsgettingwierd · 27/04/2021 18:05

My DF is allergic to penicillin and has had both doses of pfiezer

Elieza · 28/04/2021 18:00

Thanks re advice on eggs. Will pass it on to relative. Although I wonder if she is just using that as an excuse to avoid a vaccination!

They ask you at the appointment if you have allergies anyway.

Plus you can guess what type of vaccine from the venue. If it’s a hospital it will likely have really cold fridges so the vaccines that need stored at -70 would presumably be used in there. So there are only a couple of them.

Ones that require regular refrigeration would presumably be used at gp surgeries or community centre type venues.

So I would guess what vaccination based on venue.

GertiMJN · 28/04/2021 18:03

I'm allergic to penicillin and it wasn't a factor at all.
I had AZ and apart from feeling chivvery overnight and an achy arm for a few days, it didn't affect me.
