Tinnitus

I’ve just read (on the daily Mail online (don’t judge me)), that the vaccine has caused tinnitus in some people. Has anyone experienced this? Is it any particular one of the vaccines?

I had an ENT appointment for my tinnitus on Saturday and Covid wasn’t mentioned at all.

I had a hearing test before seeing him which although I passed fine it really highlighted to me how much my tinnitus affects the acuity of my hearing in my left ear (where the tinnitus is worse).

He’s now referred me for an MRI scan which he said is a pretty standard investigation and although most come back as clear, they do it to rule out any physiological problem with the mechanism of the ear that is causing it.

Like has been said on here by many people he did warn me that there is no cure sadly and it’s just a case of finding a way to live with it.

Glad I came across this post. I have had tinnitus since May 2019 after feeling very sick. No cough albeit I had really bad headaches, dizziness, diarrhea, some loss of taste, fever & tinnitus. This lasted months with all symptoms dissipating eventually except the tinnitus. Alas this seems to be permanent.
I was told there was a viral infection going around which was probably causing my symptoms? I had a pretty comprehensive hearing test which showed zero hearing loss so the doctors just pinned it down to “anxiety”/a virus. I now wonder if it was some coronavirus?

Hairbrush123 · 03/05/2021 09:42

I wonder with these links of the vaccine/covid causing tinnitus - will we see more awareness of tinnitus in the media? Thus possibly creating good treatment/a cure sooner?

GoBrookeYourself · 03/05/2021 09:58

Hairbrush123 I think this is so important. I don’t have tinnitus, but the thought of it is terrifying because it’s so constant. I have every sympathy for those who have it and feel more needs to be done to find a cure for it, because it must be so mentally exhausting to live with.

I had an appointment with a ear nose and throat specialist last summer re some hearing loss and I was advised by him that they are seeing hearing loss and tinnitus after people having covid too.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/05/2021 13:19

My ear ringing is worse since the vaccine actually, so I a, worried about having my second dose.
My GP is hopeless, not sure what to do.

Boph · 03/05/2021 13:33

I developed pulsatile tinnitis and hearing loss last year, I think this is different from regular tinnitis?
Definitely never had covid. It has got worse recently but I hadn't connected it to vaccine.

ZammoUK · 03/05/2021 16:41

This is my major concern and why I haven't taken the vaccine yet. People in my family have asked why since I was offered it in March and I have said I don't want my existing tinnitus to be spiked for god knows how long. They clearly don't understand, but it is HELL when my tinnitus spikes, often caused by colds and other illnesses, and I knew even without reading about it first that the response from a vaccine (any vaccine) has the protentional to spike existing tinnitus due to it causing the immune system to briefly go in to overdrive with inflammation.

It is frustrating when people then respond "yes, but so can COVID", which I always think a daft response, as I have a 10 in 100,000 chance of catching COVID (in my area as of today) compared to definitely having the vaccine injected. Is there a chance I might have the vaccine and NOT get a spike in tinnitus ? Sure, but given my experience in the past the chances are high I would and there is also a chance I wouldn't with COVID too.

As for creating tinnitus in people who don't already have it, I have no data for that.

Norugratsatall · 03/05/2021 19:20

I've had tinnitus on and off both as a child and periodically as an adult. Each time it has gone eventually. Mine flares up as an immune response to a virus (as a PP alluded to). I caught Covid last March - unconfirmed as no testing then - and have been left with Long Covid the worst symptom of which is tinnitus (and bloody insomnia!). It comes and goes (sometimes disappears for weeks). Had an ENT appt last Dec about it and the consultant was encouraging in that he said, because it's post viral, it's likely to go completely in time.

Of course, with Long Covid, there are repeated relapses which mean it spikes again every time I relapse. It does get me down as it massively disturbs my sleep and thus my quality of.life and general well-being. I find it depressing there's no treatment, no cure and therefore no hope for sufferers.

I had first dose of vaccine in March (AZ). It didn't affect my tinnitus one way or the other.

I got mild tinnitus after a cold a few years ago

JimBobNoJob · 04/05/2021 10:57

I’ve suffered from tinnitus since I was a teen, it’s mild and I can live with it as I don’t notice it most of the time. It’s usually when I go to bed that I notice more.
Had Moderna vaccine Friday, noticed last night before I went to bed my ears were ringing. When trying to sleep I got a humming noise, like my heating was on or the cooling system in my fridge. (I usually get high pitched squeals and ringing)
Today my ears are especially noticeable (ringing) which isn’t usual during the day. I still feel a bit groggy from side effects so hopefully it will settle down.

The www.tinnitus.org.uk/covid19 information pages might be helpful to some of you.

MrsBennetsnerves · 04/05/2021 16:32

I had tinnitus when I was younger, and then it went away again for decades. It came back in my right ear last year after I had Covid and it hasn't gone away since. So I already had tinnitus when I was vaccinated and it didn't make any difference either way.

ittakes2 · 05/05/2021 18:25

I think mine got worse after AZ.

Theonlyoneiknow · 21/05/2021 22:19

I had Pfizer vaccine 3 weeks ago and tinnitus started about a week afterwards. Makes me worried about dose 2. Of course it might not be linked but it does seem to be a known side effect?

shewalkslikerihanna · 21/05/2021 23:16

My friend went deaf after the vaccine and the resulting tinnitus has made them suicidal

@shewalkslikerihanna Oh gosh, sorry to hear that.

I had a mild uptick in my tinnitus in the days following my Moderna vaccine but it settled down pretty quickly.

I first got it after a nasty cold and blockage in my ear when I was 21. I gradually habituated to it over two decades but got a new version at the start of the year after trying some Sony noise cancelling headphones (at a quiet volume). If you have tinnitus think twice about using them!

MiaRoma · 27/05/2021 12:34

I had my first AZ vaccine at the beginning of March and after a few days quite a few side effects appeared and continued. Confirmed by GP as being caused by the vaccine. I now have tinnitus. I'm assuming its connected to the vaccine but it may not be. Its horrible.

penni00 · 27/05/2021 17:29

I have read that Covid can cause it, that the vaccines can also cause it, plus I have read that the vaccines can make existing tinnitus worse.

penni00 · 27/05/2021 17:33

Re above, perhaps just worse temporarily.

penni00 · 27/05/2021 17:38

Sorry to all those who have tinnitus, I believe it is meant to horrible, more horrible than you would imagine, and not something you can get relief from by taking painkillers.

Sisisimone · 27/05/2021 17:43

My dad has had Tinnitus since his 2nd Pfizer jab. Its not resolved and its been a month or so now

macshoto · 27/05/2021 17:47

I've had mild tinnitus for much of the period I have been WFH due to the pandemic. At my annual work medical the doctor confirmed wasn't unusual due to lots of office workers spending their days on video calls with headphones in their ears.

Personally I suspect this has more to do with possible increased incidence than any vaccine link.

Sisisimone · 27/05/2021 18:02

Well my dad is 80 and has never partaken in a video call in his life so I think its far more likely to be the vaccination since it occurred straight afterwards and its a reported side effect!
