Deaths in India

Pissedoff1234 · 26/04/2021 22:38

Ive just been reading about the terrible crisis going on in India. Obviously this is horrible to hear about and they really are having a tough time with regards to oxygen etc. The numbers just seemed horrendous.

Sat chatting with DH. I have health anxiety so was expressing this to him when he said that India had 20 times the population. When you divide the deaths per day and the cases per day by 20, the numbers are a lot lower than here at the peak.

I'm not saying that what they're going through isn't awful, their infrastructure and hospitals aren't coping and aid is needed from around the world to help but the media never explain this and lots of people will be panicking about the situation over there.

I guess it may be the under reporting and we may never know the true number coming out of India but I was still surprised at the numbers.

Not many European countries have covered themselves in glory to be fair.

OP - there are already multiple existing threads about this. But somehow I am vaguely contributing to another one Confused

Massive amounts of underreporting.

paralysedbyinertia · 26/04/2021 22:52

It's complex. There is almost certainly a significant amount of under-reporting, so it's likely that the actual death toll is significantly higher than what we're being told. Some estimates put the actual figures at around 5 or even 10 times the official figures.

Secondly, yes, the population is huge, but covid is not evenly distributed across the country. The problems are currently heavily concentrated in certain areas - particularly the capital, but not exclusively. For large swathes of the population, life is still pretty normal - perhaps with some restrictions, but certainly not experiencing the type of images that we're seeing on our screens.

But for the people who are living right in the eye of the storm, in the worst affected areas, it looks like hell on earth right now. It is terrifying, and people are dying needlessly because supplies are short and the hospitals are overwhelmed. This is on a totally different scale to anything we saw here at the peak, even though the deaths per million population for the whole country are miniscule compared to ours.

sandgrown · 26/04/2021 22:52

The whole situation in India is very sad and I hope our government send more supplies. Is there anything that we as individuals can do to help the situation?

paralysedbyinertia · 26/04/2021 22:57

Plus of course, India are still at the beginning of their second wave, whereas we're already on the other side. It's not expected to peak for another couple of weeks, so the death rate will sadly look a bit different by the end of it.Sad

I think there are probably multiple charities collecting money. The Red Cross is one, but there will doubtless be others.

Try to pick a reputable one to ensure that the funds get to the right people.

India is very different to the UK in terms of overtly and population in cities.

They also don’t have the money to furlough people and they’ll stave if they don’t work.

So the situation will only get worse for them.

It’s absolutely awful.

Torvean · 26/04/2021 23:48

You can't just divide the cases by 20. They don't have the same access to testing or the facilities to test the swabs. There will be those who have died at home before being diagnosed. There will be deaths in hospital of ppl no diagnosed. There will be a far less robust way of reporting cases and deaths.

They had 325 000 new cases in 1 day ( even that won't be correct)

You cannot compare the situation in India to here.

Plus India us having a lot more deaths of under 50s than we ever had.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/04/2021 23:53

Aren't there a huge number of people in India who aren't registered when they were born, so assume they wouldn't be registered if they die, so wouldn't count in numbers

dottiedaisee · 26/04/2021 23:54

My 21 year old did comment that the cricket is still happening despite the biggest disaster to hit India ever ! Apparently the teams are moving all over the country to play !!
