Weird symptoms following 2nd jab

I’m 45 and had my second AZ vaccine on Saturday. I wasn’t worried about having it.

Walking back to the car to sit and wait for the required 15 minute period before driving off I felt short of breath, but not wheezy. I then felt very panicky. Debated going back in but nothing else developed and the feelings eventually passed. All good, I drove home.

Saturday night I woke up after about an hour of sleep utterly consumed by grief and panic and sobbed like a baby for about an hour. My mood plunged and everything felt very bleak.

Sunday I tried to pull myself together but I felt very empty and flat. I had to work through Sunday night (self employed) and at about 6am I noticed my upper stomach was hard and deeply uncomfortable. It’s also swollen but I’m desperately overweight now so that doesn’t help.

Since this morning I’ve had a splitting headache and my mood is rock bottom. Constantly crying and tearful, I’ve been in bed all day. Stomach still feels weird and I’ve got zero appetite.

I have suffered with anxiety for years but never anything like this. Life can be quite tough, I’ve got two autistic children who I home educate now, my DM is disabled and my DP lost his job last week. I work very long hours and get little sleep. So theoretically it could be stress but I’ve been through much tougher times and never had this before.

Could it possibly be related to the vaccine?? I was really ill with the first dose with flu-type symptoms but had expected to sail through the second dose.

I feel so awful physically and mentally- I just don’t know what to do with myself.

I had the Pfizer yesterday and had hallucinations all night, it was the strangest experience ever. Have woken up utterly exhausted with a very sore arm and headache but otherwise fine. So strange.

Bluebird76 · 27/04/2021 12:03

I had severe breathlessness after my first az jab. GP put it down to 'acute exacerbation of asthma' but I've never experienced anything vaguely similar before. A course of oral steroids put a stop to it but it was pretty scary. I'm still having the second jab though!

Rainbowsandstorms · 27/04/2021 12:07

@Sparks779 breathlessness after the AZ vaccination is listed as a side effect that needs to be investigated in relation to blood clots. I would be pushing for this to be properly investigated and referring them back to the medical guidance. It’s covered in this link www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-of-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca/information-for-uk-recipients-on-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca

Bluebird76 · 27/04/2021 12:15

I agree rainbows. In retrospect I'm Hmm that the GP didn't think 'hang on a second' when I mentioned that I'd just had the az and was feeling incredibly breathless. I actually ended up in hospital last week being investigated for upper abdominal pain and had a (clear) CT scan then, but that was after three GP and two a&e trips!!

Sparks779 · 27/04/2021 12:35

@rainbowstorms we spoke to the NHS who sent my husband for a covid test ..... I'll call them back again today.

Sparks779 · 27/04/2021 12:36

@Bluebird76 what was the outcome of your hospital visits and GP appointments. Are you still breathless?

Bluebird76 · 27/04/2021 14:06

The breathlessness had settled by then - it was actually suspected gallbladder pain that sent me in to hospital, and it's only when gallbladder turned out to be normal on a scan that they started looking for other explanations, and when I mentioned earlier breathlessness they said 'lets just do a CT scan'. Nothing untoward found - source of pain undetermined and mysterious, but happily resolved, whatever it was!

Chances are always that there's going to be an alternative/benign explanation, but it does feel like GPs should be on extra alert for zebra hooves (IE rare but v serious issues) after the AZ.

Sparks779 · 27/04/2021 15:27

@Bluebird76 I don't disagree with you about the NHS. He has taken a covid test. If it's negative we will go back to the hospital for tests. Results should be in tomorrow

Rainbowsandstorms · 28/04/2021 14:19

@Sparks779 I hope it eases soon and all is well. No harm in asking for a second opinion re the breathlessness, in view of him having had the AZ. In all probability there’s probably another explanation for it but given the seriousness of blood clots and it being flagged as a symptom to watch out for after the vaccination I’d at least want a frank discussion re why they didn’t feel any further investigation is necessary. I hope he feels better very soon.

OhShitShit · 28/04/2021 15:31

Hey all

Just to update re: palpitations etc

I spoke to my doctor last night, explained symptoms of fatigue, heart palps, susceptibility to other illnesses, hair loss, and weird reaction to jab etc. & they think possibly/probably I have long covid (had a presumed case in April).

Jab reaction obviously slightly separate to that - but just for context.

Interestingly/worryingly I had an ECG in Sept last year, that showed some higher than normal levels of electrical activity that could be result of thickened heart muscle - but my previous GP never followed it up. (?)
It would explain many of my symptoms and could be part of a wider picture of long covid effects.

New doctor has asked for a 24 hour ecg, an echo and more blood tests....

So just to say.... if you’re feeling shit, do speak to your doctor. I had no idea these results were “off” as nobody had told me- but was very willing to brush off symptoms in the context of the pandemic and having never had a positive test. Plus you know... “other people being worse off”.

Please don’t do that. I was daft. Don’t be daft.

Emma2021 · 28/04/2021 17:38

Does any feel a bit light headed, dizzy a few hours afterwards or as in my case about 30 mins afterwards and then i was ok the next day.

Someone i know is feeling light headed about 5 hours after their second dose.

Btw, i had headaches for the first few days but less so than the first and di not take meds but i think me being an anxious type did not help.

today about an hour ago i noted o bruise on my right leg above the knee about 4 inches up but then i thought about what i did yesterday and i lifted two 10 lite paint buckets boy they were heavy and i'm a size 10 so i'm almost certain the edge of the bucket on my weaker side caughter my leg.

I want more info but the more i read and think the more anxious i get

So come on MHRA put our minds more at rest re second dose.

On the whole from the people I know inc myself, after affects of the 2nd jab are less so so that is good news.

Emma2021 · 28/04/2021 17:40

Btw reading more posts here.

Myself and about 6 others I know personally only suffered mild sympotms second and a bit more first and a lot less so second, so far and no more than 3/4 days and most did not take any apracemotls etc.

HTH

lineandsinker · 28/04/2021 17:49

I had a panic attack immediately after my first Pfizer jab in January - despite not being particularly worried about having it.

I’ve always suffered from anxiety but have been able to manage it within my day-to-day life; however it has really ramped up in the months following the vaccine and I’ve had several out-of-the-blue panic attacks, some of which have lasted for several hours.

GP has just diagnosed me with Panic Disorder and I’ve had to start back on my anti-depressants.

I’ve opted not to have my second vaccine because I’m not convinced that there isn’t a link and because of the fear of exacerbating my poor mental health any further.

Sparks779 · 28/04/2021 19:32

My husband had a negative covid test. After lots of pushing with the NHS and via our GP he is now at our local hospital having a full MOT including bloods, ECG, xray etc.

What is pissing me off so much is hearing that lots of people are experiencing these kind of symptoms and are being fobbed off by the NHS who won't admit it's to do with the vaccine. It is not a coincidence.

I would rather the NHS tell people the truth about the extent and nature of possible side effects of the astra zeneca vaccine in particular.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/04/2021 19:36

This is interesting. I had a panic attack 10 mins after my AZ and have had a few mini ones since. Heart palpitations even waking me in the night.

My friend has been severely depressed after her second AZ.

Rainbowsandstorms · 28/04/2021 20:05

@Sparks779 I’m really pleased he’s being checked over. I hope it’s nothing serious but it worried me that he’d been fobbed off.

@OhShitShit I’m glad you’re slowly managing to get to the bottom of what’s going on. I’m sorry things weren’t followed up as they should have been.

Sparks779 · 30/04/2021 14:19

Update today. We are in hospital for my husbands CT scan. He is 13 days post vaxx I am on day 5. I too have started to experience shortness of breath. I can clearly say I am anti vaccine.

ReginaPhalangee · 30/04/2021 18:10

I'm 11 days post-1st AZ and still can't touch my arm. Redness down but still hot and huge lump under skin

MRex · 30/04/2021 19:00

@ReginaPhalangee

I'm 11 days post-1st AZ and still can't touch my arm. Redness down but still hot and huge lump under skin
A week - fine. But 11 days seems a bit long; might be a good idea to get it checked by a GP in case you have a localised infection.
Runway · 30/04/2021 19:15

Well I’ve suffered anxiety on and off all my life. A times debilitating. Had the vaccine no problems. You’re all just converging with one story outcome but there will be millions who didn’t have panic attacks. Twenty people feeling the same doesn’t mean it’s a ‘thing’

Bluebird76 · 30/04/2021 19:42

I hope the CT scan gives the all clear, sparks.

But despite my grim reaction to the jab, I will say that wild horses wouldn't stop me from having the second one. Given my 'druthers I'd have preferred the Pfizer, but looking at what's unfolding in the rest of the world, we're very lucky to be getting any vaccine at all. Covid also causes shortness of breath,I believe...

GrumpyTerrier · 30/04/2021 20:08

My mood went really low and doomy, felt like something bad had happened/was gonna happen, for about 2 weeks. I also had anxiety feelings.

Sparks779 · 30/04/2021 23:27

@Bluebird76 yes shortness of breath is but people are not being advised properly by the health authority that it is a more common side effects of the vaccine. It isn't being publicised. I am most pisssed off that today we were told that my husband and my shortness of breath 5 and 13 days post vaxx were due to the vaccine. This is after 6 days of calling the NHS seeking clarity being told its probably covid and to take a test.

I guess I am just so pissed off at the misinformation so people like me and my husband totally freak out for days being fobbed off due to lack of knowledge or information within the health service.

It honestly feels like government are holding back on sharing the actual truth on the full range of side effects so as not to deter people. Everyone has the right to decide but based on the right information

Sparks779 · 30/04/2021 23:27

Thank you all for sharing by the way.

goldpendant · 30/04/2021 23:35

Just to say for anyone feeling anxious - my 2nd AZ was a piece of cake compared to the first. First left me feeling flu like for 4 days, 2nd was a mildly sore arm for 24hrs!
