Autistic Adult

DS is 21 and has autism and dyspraxia. I was on the priority list for the vaccine along with the first group as I'm carer to somebody clinically vulnerable. But the actual person who IS clinically vulnerable hasn't heard anything about when he'll be getting his. Does he just have to wait for his age group? Does being clinically vulnerable not really mean much in reality? Just don't know what to tell him when he keeps asking

My 26 year old neighbour is autistic and had his first vaccine a few weeks ago. You should contact your GP for him and for you as a carer.

Or try 119 or the NHS Booking Site

Mindymomo
Thanks. I had mine a while ago, just wondered when DS would be getting his

Autism and dyspraxia by themselves do not make someone clinically vulnerable. Does he have other conditions such as a learning disability?

rosie39forever · 26/04/2021 14:25

DD is 17 has autism and severe learning disabilities, she had her vaccine 5 weeks ago. You will probably have to go through your gp as they are handling all group 6. Is your ds on the learning disabilities register with your doctor? If not that is why you haven't been contacted, give them a ring and they will book him in either with them or at your local hub.

Autism doesn't put anyone into the vulnerable category.

Then why did I get a letter months ago saying I can have mine because I'm a carer to somebody clinically vulnerable?

I have no idea. You can check the Information yourself though. Neither autism nor dyspraxia will place anyone into a vulnerable category.

Perhaps you got a letter because all carers were entitled to a vaccine.

That's how all the letters to those of us who receive Carers Allowance was worded. I think it was because they initially were only going to offer it to a limited number of carers (those caring for CEV people) and then widened eligibility but didn't change the letter template.
blameitonthecaffeine · 26/04/2021 17:10

Are you sure it didn't say you were entitled because you are a carer to someone vulnerable rather than someone clinically vulnerable. I think you were eligible because your son would struggle if you were ill rather than because he would get very ill with covid?

Boulshired · 26/04/2021 17:48

The guidance for carers was changing frequently prior to the letters for carers allowance and they did state clinically vulnerable when the assessment for carers has nothing to do with clinically vulnerable nor does having a GPs carers code. It’s also why there was many carers left in the hands of their GPs to be decided if they qualified.
