Would you have 2nd AZ vaccination if ....

You'd had a stroke 2 weeks after the 1st jab?

I've name changed for this. So my dh (early 50s) had the AZ vaccine. 2 weeks later he had a stroke... he's totally fine now and on medication. He has a few blood clots in his brain and is waiting for further tests.
He has no other medical issues, fit, healthy weight and basically was not really a candidate for a stroke. At the clinic they asked him if he'd had the vaccine, when and which one. Dh didn't think to ask about the 2nd jab at that time.
Obviously, as he's had the 1st jab, he's pro vaccination, but he feels unsure about having the 2nd. He has an appointment with the GP this week and will ask their advice. Dh knows a neurologist and he said if it was him he wouldn't have the 2nd jab.
I have already had both vaccinations.
What would you do?

Oooh I honestly don’t think I would without a detailed conversation with medical experts.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 25/04/2021 20:14

I had blood clot related symptoms and had my second jab plan signed off by the CCG. Your husband should get the same - they’ll walk him through the options and risks, and give a recommendation. Don’t get it before he’s had that.

Cattitudes · 25/04/2021 20:15

No, not with that history until more evidence about whether clots more or less likely after second dose. Ask the GP but to be honest no one can really know yet.

Hairyfairy01 · 25/04/2021 20:15

No. Is he still under the care of a stroke consultant? If so I would discuss it with them rather than his GP.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 25/04/2021 20:17

Dh had a stroke a few weeks ago (no vaccine yet) and his GP sister and the consultant neurologist said don't have the AZ. He is fit and healthy, early 40s, normal bmi, exercises, never usually ill so came as a total shock.

I think it would be a no from me.

timetickson · 25/04/2021 20:24

Thanks for replies. His next appointment at the stroke clinic is after the date of the booked second jab. He tried to get in touch with the consultant, but receptionist told dh to phone GP.
Dinosaur - hope you're all doing ok. It was a total shock for us too.

I wouldn’t do the AZ again, they do say not to if already had a clot or similar after the first. With his history he can have an alternative vaccine.

BunsyGirl · 25/04/2021 20:48

The GP should be able to get in touch with the consultant directly for advice.

Cookerhood · 25/04/2021 20:56

Presumably it's not the same sort of clot, so no particular reason to be worried about the vaccination, but I would speak to his consultant or GP, or the dcotor when he goes for the jab.

Cookerhood · 25/04/2021 20:56

I don't think he can at the moment as they aren't licensed to be mixed.
HSHorror · 25/04/2021 20:59

Was it a CVST?

timetickson · 25/04/2021 21:38

HSHorror - that hasn't been mentioned. They don't know where the blood clots came from so are going to investigate his heart next.

OP posts:
Dowser · 25/04/2021 22:27

No way.
He has blood clots in his brain already and now on medication??

My dh had a stroke 5 years ago. Totally healthy or so we thought.
Now on medication
It knocked out his peripheral vision, so cannot drive, cannot see when he puts things down, left a gaping black hole in his vision and he tires easily.

No way is he messing with a vax.

Dowser · 25/04/2021 22:29

@timetickson
My dh wore a heart monitor for a week.
They found arrthymia. His heart will tick tok normally for a few seconds, then beats faster which can whip the blood into clots.
The medication ( rivaroxaban) keeps his blood thin.
I hate him being on it but we can’t risk a second occurrence.

Alonim · 25/04/2021 23:46

Definitely not - no. I'm shocked OP that you're considering it and I don't mean that rudely. I'm just so shocked that so many people seem willing to put themselves through the second jab when they've had such dreadful responses with the first.

rarat · 25/04/2021 23:59

Is he ok thinners, would that reduce the risk?

rarat · 26/04/2021 00:00

i'm not ok

rarat · 26/04/2021 00:00

fucks sake!

Is he on

rarat · 26/04/2021 00:01

Either way I would discuss it

anyoldtime · 26/04/2021 00:03

No. Absolutely not.

paralysedbyinertia · 26/04/2021 00:11

OP, I think your dh needs to just follow the advice from the medical professionals who know his current condition and medical history. A bunch of randoms on the internet really won't me of much use to you.

Albgo · 26/04/2021 00:29

I'm 40. I had a stroke in February and only became eligible for the vaccination because of this. I had the AZ vaccine and will be having my second dose in the summer.

YellowPurple · 26/04/2021 00:34

Partner has 2 blood conditions

Had a blood platelets reaction to 1st jab...
Was told by his blood specialist to have the 2nd one

Speak to your husbands specialists ,
Noone can really tell you yes or no,
Just give you advice

User3456 · 26/04/2021 00:47

I think I would be asking the same question to the medical professionals dealing with his case. It's reasonable to be concerned and asking this question.
Bear in mind that covid can cause blood clots too - risk needs to be weighed up against that, but in your husband's case of course the balance is different from other people's which is why he needs to be advised by a professional that knows his individual medical history. And it might be that they now think the blood thinners he is already on will protect him now, I don't know.
I don't know if it would be any help, but there are antibody test kits for £50 - if he's deciding against the second vax he might want to check his antibody levels. And look into how long they expect antibodies to last for.
I don't know at what point they might offer a different brand of vaccine - they don't seem to be doing that currently but it's possible that in future he might be able to have a Pfizer or moderns jab... That's another question for the medics.
Hope he has a speedy recovery and all goes well whatever he decides.

Lavender17 · 26/04/2021 04:27

There is absolutely NO WAY I would have the second vaccine.
