Who can I ask about support bubbles?

A family member wants to take away my mum and dad for a holiday next month and have invited me to join as the second family.

Dad has dementia and mum is his full-time carer, and feels like she is full-time caring for an adult who is essentially like looking after a toddler. She needs a break, but cannot manage the drive back to their roots, for one last holiday before he forgets every last link there. She also can't have a meaningful break because she will be caring for him 24/7 if she were to be able to afford to hire a taxi to get there. So my brother has offered to hire a van and drive his family and the parents to go and stay together for a week, as a support bubble.

Does this qualify under the support bubble mentioned in the rules? It's so hard to tell. I wonder where you can ask for clarification? They were told by the self catering company that police do spot checks and I can't imagine the police welcome people ringing to check whether they qualify under the rules or not, but I don't know how else they can check.

Does anyone know?

From May 17th it will be fine, at the moment you can holiday only with your own household or support bubble. From May 17th rule of 6 or 2 households (including support bubbles) I thought that was pretty clear in the guidelines at the moment.

Hettylala · 28/04/2021 18:49

I work in holiday lettings and our trade organisation has been pretty clear that two households and support bubbles, if applicable, can share self catering accommodation from 17th May.

Not sure why the police are muddying the waters with the indoor/outdoor stuff as that is irrelevant. If you are intending to go before 17th May then it is ONE household and support bubble only.

LockedFarAway · 28/04/2021 20:10

No, I made it clear that I was talking after 17 May. But even then they said:

"From the 17th if all goes ahead as planned it will revert to the rule of 6 for indoors or 2 households. This will be the law we will follow"

Their point was, the government might not add the same support bubble thing they have done for outdoors!

The step regulations are already written and have been released since step one came into place.
May 17 is step 3 and does include support bubbles

This is not who I work for, but this is the understanding of practically every holiday company in England at the moment. If this is not correct then they are all going to be breaking the law!

If your holiday is due to begin between 17th May and 20th June we hope you should be able to go ahead as planned. However, please note that during this period you should only stay in the accommodation with a maximum of two households (with support bubbles) OR a maximum of 6 people from different households.

Buzzinwithbez · 28/04/2021 20:34

It's time police made more effort to understand the law!

Is this the line that refers to support bubbles still being allowed?

Yes.

LockedFarAway · 29/04/2021 06:14

That's really helpful and I thank you for it. I think I'll print it out and bring it with me!

Thanks also to those sharing the holiday Lettings status, that is great.

It's scary how much the police either want to block things or don't know what the law actually is, or maybe they're simply from an area that just doesn't want visitors.

Yes your dB and parents are a bubble as your mum is his carer = 1 HOUSEHOLD

You're family =2 HOUSEHOLDS.

Sorry your

I'm tempted to make a complaint that they don't know their stuff, like a pre-emotive strike in case they cause us trouble on our holiday! But I'm also afraid it might put us in their sights, which wouldn't be a good idea.

I’d be surprised if the police had the time to go round checking holiday cottages. Go and enjoy your holiday.

LockedFarAway · 30/04/2021 09:18

According to the holiday let, they're doing spot checks and targeting large properties, which of course we'd be in.

But I taking out a print out of the legislation link given in this thread, so I can wave that under their noses if they get funny about it.

Does make me want to do a pre-emptive strike first and complain that they don't seem to even know the legislation themselves though. Scary.
