Silly question about the clot risk and 2nd jabs

Crispycremedelight · 23/04/2021 22:59

Evening, I’m been trying to find out information but not getting anywhere! I’m going for my 2nd AZ jab next week. I am fully aware that the clot risk is low (I’m still going to get the dose). I suffer from an extremely rare autoimmune disease that attacks my major artery (the aorta) and I’m a bit of a bleed risk so I’m interested to know if the clot risk is still the same after the 2nd jab or, because you’ve already had the first dose the risk, so to speak has passed Iyswim? Can anyone point me in the direction of research papers so I can better understand what’s going on in the media other than them scaremongering the hell out of everything

I understand that any risk is from the first dose only.

UmbilicusProfundus · 23/04/2021 23:05

Sorry I don’t know the answer, but shamelessly placemarking to see if anyone links to the evidence. All the cases identified early on were after the first dose, and it’s logical that the likelihood is even less of having such an rare reaction just following a second dose when the first was fine. But interested to know if the evidence has emerged yet.

Rainbowsandstorms · 23/04/2021 23:11

The government yellow card report only has one report of the specific clots they are monitoring after a second dose all the others have been after the first. It appears that the greatest risk is after the first www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

MiniMaxi · 23/04/2021 23:31

When they released the stats a couple of weeks ago, they said all cases to that point were from first doses - however I think they’d literally only had a week or so of second doses done by then, so it’s a bit of a fudge of the data IMHO.

That said I’ve not yet seen anything in the news (even the scaremonger news) about lots of cases post second dose.

ravethegrannies · 23/04/2021 23:38

Maybe speak to your GP? But as pp said there has only been one case after second dose reported so far.

PurplePumpkinDream · 23/04/2021 23:53

Just have a word with your GP as you have an autoimmune condition. It may make no difference or they might suggest a different jab. I was rather suspicious when they said that these serious reactions happened all after the first dose as there hadn’t been quite enough of the second.

Thanks ladies I really appreciate those these comments. I didn’t even think to speak to my specialist. I did when it came to receiving the jab 🤦🏻‍♀️
I will drop my specialist an email as he is world leading in my disease and he also works at Imperial College London so he maybe a bit more at the forefront of knowledge. Again thanks ladies

Yes, I would ask your specialist. Common sense would dictate that if you were ok.aftervthevfirst you should be ok, but who knows? The trouble is, it's probably not really clear yet as not that many second doses of AZ have been given until fairly recently.

bubbleteatea · 24/04/2021 12:15

Yes I second @Cookerhood I'd think that we "passed the test" with the first jab, but who knows. I'd be curious to hear what your specialist says OP, as I have had similar thoughts to you and I really want to complete my vaccination...

Crispycremedelight · 24/04/2021 16:14

I agree @Cookerhood, I know I’ll be ok I think it’s where it’s in the forefront of media attention I get ‘scared’ and my common sense seems to be flying out the window. I’ll update when I receive a response from my specialist, I emailed him first thing this morning 🙂

Shameless placemarking, my second is this week and I want to know too.

pursuedbyablackdog · 24/04/2021 16:40

My guess, and it is only a guess/ hypothesis, is that if you don't react to first dose you'd be very unlikely to react to the second. I imagine that if you develop a clot after first dose you wouldn't be offered a second due to risk factors, so any evidence of second dose clot risk will take much longer to come to light (if there is is any risk) but as I've said I'm only guessing and don't work in this field.

ittakes2 · 24/04/2021 16:44

Also placemarking - I spoke to my GP about my condition and they are speaking to other doctors about my second jab and recommend you do to. The only thing I should add is they said not to take dispirin as a preventative measure as that can affect your blood platlets (GP words not mine!)

Motorina · 24/04/2021 16:59

Nobody knows the answer, and there aren’t any research papers. It’s too soon.

The thought is that the reaction is effectively an idiosyncratic reaction (similar to an allergy) where that person’s immune system reacts strangely. If that’s true, then dose 2 should be fine - you’ve already established your body doesn’t work that way - but this remains speculative until more second doses have been rolled out.

I’m screwed then 😂 I’ve had Open Heart Surgery so I’m Aspirin for the rest of my life incidentally to reduce blood clotting in my heart and valves where they’ve repaired the root from my heart and given me a ‘hosepipe’ to the arch

Sounds like a good plan OP :)
TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 24/04/2021 17:23

I would have thought your specialist would have contacted you if they didn't think you should have it, but in your situation I'd be checking too! Hope you hear back soon.

I had my second today ( but I only have
boring underlying issues) Very pleased to have had it!!

Crispycremedelight · 24/04/2021 19:18

My specialist has emailed me back!

Alongside reassuring information he sent me this
“ Following your second dose, if you experience an unusual headache between 4-7 and up to 10 days after the vaccine then you should seek medical attention and have a platelet count checked. ”

Thanks everyone

@Crispycremedelight Thanks! This is very reassuring coming from your specialist for all of us waiting for our second AZ!

landofgiants · 24/04/2021 20:40

What @Rainbowsandstorms said. Also your risk of clots if you were to be infected with Covid-19 is much much higher than the risk of clots after vaccination.

bubbleteatea · 24/04/2021 22:54

Thank you @Crispycremedelight this helps and I hope it has reassured you? Hope all goes well for us all
