Its the pictures coming out of india, with the recent festival and hundreds of people crammed together, during a second covid wave. This virus will just mutate forever, its too global to contain. Its just never going away. What the hells going to happen to us or our kids futures?
I can't see a way out of this. Science can't catch up, its too far spread to ever get a handle on it.

I saw the numbers coming out of India and new there was a cultural festival without even searching.

You just can't really stop people getting together at traditional religious stuff - hence where I am (Ireland) the bumps after Christmas, and Easter - although we've done really well this easter vs. last.

Vaccination will absolutely make a huge difference. Masks where we can will make a huge difference (to all diseases transmitted that way) - hell even nits is down in my kids school because they're better at keeping their distance, and mine didn't have a cold all winter!

We will hit a new normal. Masks more often, more ventilation, yearly boosters that we actually take (rather than flu that most skip). Overall, it will actually be better because of the reduced transmission of other diseases, we just have to hit the balance point and get used to it.

Leicester has absolutely had it the worst with lockdown. It’s just the negativity of the Scottish government and the desire to get to zero covid before we open up and them basically lecturing us all the time. It’s hard to explain but it affects your mood.
Yes we have restaurants but many say they can’t open because of all the restrictions and you can only meet one other household inside. It’s still good though.
I’m not totally doom and gloom by the way, just trying to explain.

People will not stick to social bloody distancing for much longer. Unless they actively want to of course. It's such a stupid meaningless term anyway - there's nothing social about it. Humans need other humans. We have always caught illnesses from one another. How have people forgotten that?

It sounds completely shit. You have my sympathy.

Heard immunity, our bodies are smarter then you think. Are you going to spend your life worrying or living?
These scary thoughts will pass.
Calm down and carry on!!!!!

I can't see a way out of this. Science can't catch up, its too far spread to ever get a handle on it.

There are currently 3 possible futures, and eternal lockdowns aren't one of them.

1) Vaccines win - a combination of what we have, and boosters successfully beat back the virus until first national, then European, and eventually global cases become trivial.

2) Vaccines don't "win", but do enough so that we can hold off another wave of the virus with testing and "passports" that prove someone is low risk. Life is mostly normal, but testing, quarantine and maybe even masks become a fixed part of everyday life.

3) We give up and accept the deaths/long-term conditions. The government saves a mint on pensions and care for the elderly, but has to spend most of it helping the younger long-term sick. Over time crowded places become unfashionable and we become a more distant society.

We don't get to choose between 1 & 2 - that's down to the skill of our scientists vs nature. We DO get to choose (or not) 3.

If OP is right and the variations do get past the vaccine then there’ll be nothing more they can do.

Life will go on and it will be a case of survival of the fittest. People won’t like that term but it’s a biological fact that humans can only do so much with medicines etc.

Let’s be honest, many of us wouldn’t exist now from a simple bacterial infection. If it wasn’t for antibiotics then we may not be here now. I include myself in this.

Thankfully we do have medicine for many things but if it transpires that medicine can’t help this then it will be a case of everyone taking their own risk assessments.

bookworm1632 whereas in the short term I to an extent agree your choices forget that nature will play a part - natural immunity will to some extent kick in as well.

Long term? Those who live, live. Those who die, die. Survival of the fittest. As has always been the case.

That hasn't happened at all this time.
The goalposts moved & survival of fittest is no longer acceptable.

Govt Borrowing running up bigger deficits & debts than ever before (as % of GDP) = very acceptable.
Widespread encouragement to burn thru Huge amounts of single use Plastics? = very acceptable
Infringe civil rights in almost every possible way to avoid a disease with a 1% mortality rate = very acceptable
People locked out of their own country = very acceptable
Snitching on neighbours = very acceptable

Most people want this new world. They must want it or they wouldn't be going along with it.

It baffles me that people consider this infectious disease the disease which breaks society as known.

That will not be the case. Human beings are social creatures and have coped with infectious diseases and will continue to cope with them in the future.

In fact, we are in a far better position than in any pandemic in history, scientists have created effective vaccines, in record time, which they will continue to work on to combat variants and drugs are and will continue to be developed to help those for whom the vaccine is ineffective.

We move forward by doing exactly what we are doing, vaccinate and treat. Unfortunately, that means that like many diseases worldwide people will continue to die of COVID but the health system will not be overwhelmed. We accept death at a manageable level for other diseases and we will do the same for COVID.

So pessimistic, we are practically back to normal already and by the end of the year, this will all be in the past. A past we want to forget, but still in the past.

I really think we just need to close borders immediately, not give days and days allowing travellers to spread virus into more countries. People should not be allowed to travel at all, not for any reasons. Going forward we will most likely need a jab every 6 months or whenever new mutations occur. I would not want to be having babies with this virus ongoing. I saw a 1 year old taking a few steps in park last week. Her Mum told me first time she has been out of house since birth as she was CEV.

I agree that the OP's post was very pessimistic. However, I can't agree that we are "practically back to normal". Normal is a very long way from this shitty half-life

No pandemic lasted for ever and neither will this one

Hardly anyone has died of Covid when you compare it to the death tolls from other pandemics.

It will be like living with the flu.

You will get offered a vaccine every year to cover you for emerging variants.

People will get on with their lives and we will get back to normal and the mask wearing half life will be a shitty memory.

Like other posts have mentioned, some will live, some will die as they do with other viruses.

With a thread title like this you do automatically assume it is handful who have done similar threads before

Indeed - and sadly that's rarely wrong

Interestingly, though, there was a thread only 2 days ago where posters denied that anyone had ever said "we're all doomed"
Okay, the actual words this time were "we're all f*cked", but I wish I could find that earlier one and link this ... though I'm sure they'd still deny the number of times it happens

The pandemic will end, but I think peoppe are beginning to cotton on now to the fact that the pre covid world is gone.. we live in a covid world now, and social distancing, masks etc are here to stay.

At the moment this is hard to accept but I think over time we will all come to embrace this new, healthier way of life! Staying apart, sticking to your household, staying at home.. will all become second nature. And that is great! Instead of holidays and restaurants we will enjoy jigsaws and cooking at home. Instead of socialising, we will focus on our own household! Single people will learn to be happier on their own, and take a long time to get to know someone to have children with...which is great! Instead of chatting to each other, we will keep our distance and all mind our own business.

In time we will learn to love the new healthier happier quieter way of life!

That sounds like hell on earth to me. I like meeting new people, chatting, exchanging ideas, going to the theatre, live music, working collaboratively in offices to solve problems face to face.

And I bet you have a partner or live with people you love. Telling single people that they just need to get used to being lonely and accept that is horrible.
