So the best brains in the world have been searching for a cure for covid (or any viral disease for that matter) for ages, but they were MISSING the key ingredient!! Boris!

Now that he's given the go ahead for British scientists to produce a cure, I've no doubt it'll happen in the next week or two!

OP posts:
FatCatThinCat · 21/04/2021 19:11

There's probably a big break through on the cards so he's getting in early to take the credit.

Newgirls · 22/04/2021 07:59

He prob scrabbled around to find something to cover up the dyson corruption

jasjas1973 · 22/04/2021 08:13

Johnson, like Farage, is a populist, he speaks to the lowest common denominator and unfortunately too many people in the UK swallow it all up.
Bojo is seen by the majority in the UK as the best person to be PM.... at least the americans had the good sense to realise that an experiment with an idiot wasn't a great idea.

However, treatments are probably the only way out of this pandemic, CV will mutate & vaccines take too long to get into arms, so unless we have oral vaccines and over the counter treatments, i can't see a genuine end to this.

DollyParton2 · 22/04/2021 09:13

OP you sound more of a plonker than Boris. Boris bashing is done, just leave it. Let’s look at the positives. Move on.

LastChanceToChange · 22/04/2021 09:17

Actually I think he's been quite clever wrt to the vaccine strategy and cautious unlocking.
As to his announcement that there will be 'Pills' to take at home for Covid in the autumn..I think he's clearly got insider knowledge of current scientific research in this country, and quite rightly so..

Bluntness100 · 22/04/2021 09:18

Well yes he is a plonker but putting together an anti viral team and funding it properly is a very good idea.

I don’t think Boris bashing is anywhere near done personally but am confident that the history books will do it comprehensively.
Bluntness100 · 22/04/2021 09:27

I’m all for bashing any politician for doing something bad, but in this Boris is not. As said, putting together a team to focus on this properly, come up with a strategy and to fully fund it is an excellent idea. It’s the next step now we have candidates on the table and the vaccine is running smoothly.

Agree, can't stand the man but the vaccine procurement/roll out policy is good and funding for better treatments is the way forward.

Criticise him for corruption and Brexit sure lol!

When Donald Trump had Covid he apparently had some curative treatment that is not available to the general public because of the cost. That is why he recovered so quickly (though some people do recover quickly anyway).

That is hearsay of course, I have no proof. An American friend, living in America, told me and she was quite convinced of the veracity. It is feasible. On the other hand a lot of people thought he was only pretending to have Covid so who knows?

Bluntness100 · 22/04/2021 09:46

Trump had remedisivir, he openly talked about it and patients are treated here with it. It’s not some secret. But it’s injection only so they need to look at can the turn it into tablet form as it’s not suitable for home use in its current state.

People are missing the point. What they are trying to achieve is what is the best home anti viral early cure available. Is there one suitable for home use that can be provided, at what stage does it need to be used, do they need to develop something else, how do they manage the logistics, storage, production and supply of that, it’s a huge effort. Enormous. So yes they need a team to pull it together.

They now have the drug candidates on the table, so a team to focus on it now is gold standard.

It’s really not as simple as well some have been trialled with varies levels of success so it’s job done, pick your fave and crack on.

Drugs and other OTC remedies that can assist in Covid infection avoidance or amelioration of disease are multi level - will take different approaches & timeframes.

We already have drugs in clinical use to target specific physiologic ramifications of Covid.

The ultimate would be a highly specific and safe anti-viral, followed by mixed formulations to address escape mutants - , but that is a long way off.

DoubleTweenQueen · 22/04/2021 11:20

There are OTC products for nasal delivery which claim to cause physical disruption to virus in the nasal tract, which can be applied if you first feel that irritation in nose and throat when coming down with a respiratory infection. I have used one myself this past year, in case it could be useful.
I believe such products are being evaluated for use against sars-cov-2, but two big caveats are

  1. Do you get a noticeable tingle with exposure reliably with this virus? Thereby signalling use, or
  2. If 1) is unreliable, would these solutions be safe for more routine use?
bordersmatter · 22/04/2021 11:56

I read in one of the online newspapers yesterday that Trump had an expensive mixture of antibody treatments. I would imagine these were not taken by mouth, but some kind of infusion...
Possibly he had donated antibody plasma?

Cost is a major factor in at-home treatment for millions of people a year as a pp said.

If they are going to announce anything soon, it will be treatments that are already in clinical trials as they can't prescribe patients anything that hasn't been trialled properly. Otherwise, they are looking at months, at best.

Terracotta9 · 22/04/2021 12:21

One of my family members in in Iran right now, and she told me that over there if you have covid you can go to hospital and be treated by some kind of IV mixture, and that this has a very high success rate.

She couldn’t tell me what was in it, and it’s difficult to find any information online. It’s a very expensive treatment, apparently, but she thinks this is due to the sanctions more than anything else.

It was already happening - and will continue to whether BJ is in charge or not. Big pharma is bigger than BJ though he does seem to like to take credit

@Operasinger

I have no clue what you're talking about but the title of your thread is a bit off.
I agree, the title is a bit off.

It should have said "a total plonker"

What Was altrwdy happening? The anti viral team isn’t just looking at anti virals, they are looking at how to do home delivery effectively thr who strategy, from delivery to manufacture to supply that wasn’t happening.

Marguerite2000 · 22/04/2021 13:11

The government is launching a new antiviral taskforce to identify and research treatments to speed up recovery.
www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launches-covid-19-antivirals-taskforce-to-roll-out-innovative-home-treatments-this-autumn
Seems like a pretty good idea to me. Good to know there are already two potential treatments in the pipeline.

Of course it already was! BJ has just imposed his own angle on it, claimed it as his thing. Our local gp led unit have been talking about this for ages as have hospitals.
