Sanitizer causing dermatitis, what to do?

I have been conscientiously sanitising my hands on entering shops throughout the pandemic and it has now caught up with me and I now have horrible itchy swollen fingers.
I know this is a common problem, has anyone found a solution? Are there sanitizers that are gentler than others that I could take with me? Do shopworkers understand why you’re not doing it if you explain? Soap and water doesn’t seem to cause it but that’s not very practical for shopping. My town has a lot of little independent shops so it’s more of a problem than if you do all the shopping in one supermarket. Thanks.

My ds has the same problem, he has started just refusing hand sanitiser & just shows them the eczema on his hands & arms.

Get hold of an alcohol free hand sanitiser to take with you and use in places where they insist on it, and stop using it elsewhere. I've had this problem too and it's taken months of on-off steroid cream to get it under control.

I've found Doublebase gel to be really good for ultra-dry hands (or any other dry bits). I use it on my hands several times a day, and also on elbows and knees at night. It's a bit greasy but it really works.

I’ve refused to use these communal sanitisers throughout the pandemic. Touching a pump that hundreds have touched before me? No thanks 🤮

I do also have bad eczema (needing prescription meds) on my hands, so if a member of staff says something, I just tell them that. I have a non-scented, sensitive skin sanitiser that I use when necessary, not every time I walk into a shop.

Honestly with eczema you already have cracks in your skin that could let germs in, so don’t feel socially pressured to use dirty communal hand pumps.

I don't ever use sanitiser and no one has ever said anything to me.

MixedUpFiles · 19/04/2021 15:07

I’ve dealt with this long before Covid. It was rare, mostly at kid scouting activities like a trip to the animal shelter, where we would be required to sanitize hands before entry. I couldn’t find a liquid sanitizer without any of my allergens, but I did find some individually wrapped wipes that I wasn’t allergic to. They got really hard to get a hold of at the beginning of the pandemic so leaving the house got really tricky, but thankfully the supply has eased at this point.

TLDR: I carry my own and just confidently pull it from my bag and tell them I’m using my own because of allergies.

Just don't use it. I don't. When your hands get cracked then the germs can hide in the crevices!

IckyPop · 19/04/2021 15:23

Try dermal 500. It's an emollient but shows to be effective against Covid

Maggiesfarm · 19/04/2021 15:44

Don't use it, just wash your hands thoroughly. Wear disposable gloves if going in to shops.

Mmmmdanone · 19/04/2021 16:59

I don't use it. Nobody says anything. Also, I think it's pretty pointless as covid is spread by airborne particles. I read that spread via surfaces and hands is unlikely.

Saucery · 19/04/2021 17:10

Boots do one called PHR, which doesn’t set my hands off like most others I use. Plus, lots of moisturizing with Aveeno.

Brownlongearedbat · 19/04/2021 19:32

I have never used it in shops and don't even posess any myself. I just wash my hands when I get home.

UnbeatenMum · 19/04/2021 19:48

We tried an alcohol free one for my DD but it also caused problems so I just tell people she's allergic if she's asked to use it in shops and I wrote a letter for school to explain the situation.

mooonstone · 19/04/2021 19:55

Use your own sanitiser, not the store’s own. Buy one that’s either super simple (so no harsh ingredients) or a moisturising one

I also don’t sanitise my hands super frequently any more. I used to upon exit/entry of a shop, before/after touching tills or lift buttons etc but I think it’s unnecessary now. I’d rather just wash my hands before/after shopping as a whole.

procrastinationexpert · 19/04/2021 20:13

I've got dermatitis on my hands from this. Now I just carry a bottle of hand sanitiser and pretend to use it when I go into shops. I don't touch things unnecessarily and I wash my hands when I get home anyway.

It's unlikely to be spread on surfaces - there was a big article in Nature about this.

CCSS15 · 19/04/2021 21:40

Try ecohydra

OnTheBrink1 · 19/04/2021 21:56

Simple. Do not use a hand sanitizer or only use one rarely.
They are murder for your hands and actually cause micro cracks / cute making germs and bacteria more likely to cross the natural skin barrier and get into your bloodstream.
Only should be used in a clinical practice and hospital by medical personnel.
I never use one- if told to I just don’t press the pump down.
Wash hands regularly with soap and use a good hand cream. Don’t wipe your nose with your hand or cough into your hand. Simples

CovidHalloween · 19/04/2021 21:59

Wear see through disposable gloves when out shopping. 😁.

radiateforme · 19/04/2021 22:04

I've never put sanitiser on my hands in my life. Just very careful, don't touch my mouth, and wash my hands a lot. Anything with alcohol in gives me a reaction, sadly even when I drink it!

Icannever · 19/04/2021 22:31

School forces the kids to use it many times a day. I put sudocreme on my sons hands in the morning to form a barrier and it seems to help

PlantDoctor · 20/04/2021 00:57

I developed lichen planus on my hands last year because of this and I can feel it starting to come back again. Last time the Dr prescribed steroid cream, which helped a lot.
