I love uk self catering holidays, but my god some of the cottages are awful. Especially in Devon and Cornwall. Pretty much every single one I stayed in had damp, or fleas or both, until I discovered Unique Home Stays. I don't work for them, but quite happy to give them a plug because their cottages are amazing. Expensive, but amazing. Apparently they reject 80% of properties that want to list with them.
Not really doing anything to dispel the theory that holidays abroad are much cheaper, but ones here can be much nicer.

My absolute worst holiday was Corsica. An outrageously expensive 'villa' that was actually the semi basement area of the owners house. Cold, dark and damp. Even the bed linen on the bed was slightly damp and musty. Awful.

I must admit, I was put off UK holidays because of grim, damp expensive cottages when DC were small. Only last year had another try and the standard seems to have improved.

We have a UK hol with friends every year and an all inclusive abroad for just us. If I'm honest I bloody love our Uk break, much more fun and active. I like the build up to a hol abroad but after 3 days I'm bored of just lying in the sun and eating ridiculous amounts. Yes I am aware people go for the culture etc but you don't see much of that from a sun lounger. Dh is relieved we're staying in the Uk this year as he hates the heat.
My ultimate holiday is travelling round the Uk seeing all our culture and sights, probably do that when the kids are in Magaluf partying.

rosie1959 · 19/04/2021 12:39

We never go abroad but have noticed that quite a lot of self catering properties in the uk are astronomical
We have booked on a hotel complex in the uk for May half term week comes in at around 2100 half board but that's for 5 adults and 3 children
We are going to Jersey in July just two of us 14 nights around the 2k mark with hotels on departure day and return day travelling club class on the ferry and hotel in Jersey for 13 nights half board

Ultimatecougar · 19/04/2021 12:58

You can get 4 nights in center parcs cumbria for 4 people last week in July for 1440 currently, although it will soon book up. Larger villas are sold out.

Ok that's not cheap, but it does include some use of the pool and there's plenty of caravans in the UK cost more than that.

StarCat2020 · 24/04/2021 21:20

We have a monster in our Loch. Your lakes do not
This is bloody brilliant!! Love it!!

Monster in the loch!!

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 24/04/2021 21:24

Prices are insane this year. The 3 night break I went on last October HT for £645 would cost £1700 this October HT.

Serenschintte · 24/04/2021 21:30

I want to go abroad because I desperately want to see my parents. We are in Europe and parents in Uk. Haven’t seen them for such a long time. With all the tests is so very expensive. Plus the cost of quarantine accommodation. It’s probably the cost of the OP Original Post of have things stuck up our noses and sit in an air BnB for 10 days.

I think you are good at finding bargains. The Jersey holiday is a fantastic deal, especially for high season.
beingsunny · 25/04/2021 07:04

Holiday costs seem to have skyrocketed!
We are in Oz and do lots of camping, obviously with borders closed we are all holidaying here and campgrounds are now triple the cost of what they were two years ago, at $120-160 per night for a patch of grass and a communal shower block.

I just tried to book a cabin near but not in Byron bay at Christmas and everything has been booked out completely.

A small 2bed apartment self catering will be $4000 for a week.

Oysterbabe · 25/04/2021 07:18

We've paid a grand for a week in a lodge, basically glorified caravan, in the UK for May half term. It's the days out that make is so expensive. We went away for a couple of days at Easter. We spent £100 going to a wildlife park by the time you'd added in overpriced lunch at the cafe, drinks and an ice cream. Obviously you can do it cheaper, making packed lunches etc, but we always end up spending loads.

Abraxan · 26/04/2021 09:22

We decided to stay in the uk this summer due to uncertainty.

2 weeks driving to and from corneal, via Bristol, Devon and bath. Fairly average hotel stays for two people in the main - not a huge amount left tbh by the time we booked.

Costing more than last years two week holiday for 3 to France and Germany via Eurostar, with train and car hire included.

France and Germany weather was glorious, very hot, very sunny, spent whole time outdoors with no issues,

In my head Cornwall and Devon will be beautiful weather. However. Reality is likely to be different.

We normally go abroad for our main holidays. I've been reminded of one of the reasons why.

DazedandConcerned · 26/04/2021 09:39

I’ve booked a month all inclusive at a 5* resort in Hurghada for £1550 for 2. I booked our flights separately for £500 for 2. Comes out at just over £1000pp in July. Can’t wait to go.

rarat · 26/04/2021 09:47

The prices are ridiculous, we looked at something that was £350 for the weekend at Easter. £3.5k for a wk in the summer. £3.5k for a 1950s shabby caravan, I will give it a miss.

Sleepisoverrated150 · 26/04/2021 10:10

We have paid just over 2k for 10 nights in Ibiza all inclusive and 5 star holiday with a water park in early July. That’s for 2 adults and 2 kids.

anyoldtime · 26/04/2021 23:33

I'm in Ireland where things are very expensive but.....with the closure of so many hospitality businesses due to covid, everybody in my circle will holiday at home to try and put money back into our own tourist economy. We feel an obligation to get our economy up and running again.

We will be open in July if anyone from the UK feels like they don't want to travel too far. We have amazing food, clean air, fabulous beaches, tons of water activities and beautiful scenery. Come and spend your money here!

PaperMonster · 27/04/2021 12:35

We booked our UK summer holiday last Sept and the prices were astronomical - we had to rule out certain parts of the country and we didn’t want to book anywhere abroad. We decided to avoid Scotland too, where we frequently holiday due to the uncertainty as to whether they’d let us in! We did, however, enjoy two weeks last summer of wall to wall sunshine on deserted beaches in Scotland. We’ve booked Scotland for summer 2022.

80sMum · 27/04/2021 12:48

Good God! Those prices are insane!
I have never paid more than £2k in total for a holiday for DH and me, including flights, airport parking, car hire, cottage/villa hire, food and other activities, entrance fees etc. Most of our holidays have cost a lot less than that.

I cannot imagine anyone being willing to pay almost £4k per person for a week's holiday in Scotland! I love Scotland, but not so much that I would fork out that much!

Do you really believe crap like that in the papers?

I live in Scotland, and know that taking a zero off that figure gets you closer to the actual cost. Although yes, the weather will be crap of course.

Embracelife · 27/04/2021 13:13

Will be similar price for similar outing or waterpark in Spain

99victoria · 27/04/2021 14:20

We got a fairly last minute booking in Scotland at what I consider to be a reasonable price.

I had spent several evenings scrolling through various places only to find them all extortionately expensive or fully booked from April to October, when I suddenly happened on a little lodge on the banks of one of the Lochs. They had one week available in August and it was 'only' £750 so I booked it immediately. This was about 3 weeks ago. I'm wondering whether someone had just cancelled.

Anyway - really looking forward to it :)

At £3700, I'd be wanting to saddle up that monster and train it to kill my enemies. Grin

Stories round a campfire, ugh. Everyone pretending to be utterly enchanted while secretly wishing they could go inside and stick Netflix on.

Newnamefor2021 · 27/04/2021 16:29

I've never taken the children aboard but I'm shocked by the prices this year, it's been steadily going up year after year buts it's crazy now! Looking at prices aboard is a lot cheaper for a lot more.
