Astra zeneca and pre eclampsia

Glitterblue · 17/04/2021 13:34

I had severe pre eclampsia and my daughter was born very early. I was told that pre eclampsia can cause problems later in life, with heart disease, strokes and blood clots.

Our surgery is now about to start the 40-40s which is my age group and I'm really worried in case it's the astra zeneca, in case it's more dangerous with my history.

I know they can't just give everyone the vaccine that they want- but does anyone happen to know anything about whether there is an increased risk after pre eclampsia?

Watching with interest, as I am in the same boat!

Glitterblue · 17/04/2021 13:57

@Ankylosaur I think I will at least ask when I'm told about the appointment- our surgery is doing phonecalls for the appointments. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

Interested in this too. I had severe pre eclampsia as well and am 45. I've numerous other conditions and won't be taking any vaccine til I can find out more.

I had hellp syndrome, severe pre eclampsia, all be it 17 years ago. I haven't suffered any ill effects since but did ask my GP who said there are no indications that previous pregnancy related clotting or low platelet disorders have any contraindications for the vaccines.
I had the AZ vaccine 8 weeks ago and apart from a sore arm have had no side effects.
I did worry for a bit but at 51 my chances of getting a clot from covid is far more likely than from the vaccine.

SeaTurtles92 · 17/04/2021 17:07

With what you described I wouldn't take AZ.
Can you go to a different hub that does another one?

FrancesV83 · 17/04/2021 17:20

Following as I had severe preeclampsia during last pregnancy

OpheliasCrayon · 17/04/2021 17:28

I feel like it's not contraindicated as they've clearly taken things in pregnancy into account as they've advised against it for those of us with antiphospholipid syndrome which is a clotting disease usually to do with pregnancy. And even then they've said unless the risk outweighs the benefit so we can still have it.
I don't know the specifics clearly but I'm just saying they are taking conditions to do with pregnancy into account in their guidelines

Someone asked this on another (v short) thread the other day and I answered it there.

You should know that preeclampsia can be caused by a myriad of symptoms and in of itself is not linked to health problems down the line.

It depends on the cause.

Only one of the many many causes is a contraindication for the AZ vaccine (antiphospholopid syndrome) and even the advice on that seems to be changing (see link)

everythingthelighttouches · 17/04/2021 19:41

Btw I had severe, early onset preeclampsia, IUGR and super prem baby.

everythingthelighttouches · 17/04/2021 19:50

Sorry, that should’ve said myriad of conditions/ mechanisms, not myriad of symptoms

JustMeAndWheatley · 18/04/2021 10:35

Interesting question and hadn’t crossed my mind until now.

I’ve been doing the J&J vaccine trial and have had the real vaccine. I had severe pre-eclampsia twice, and actually have been been fine since the vaccine. The medical staff did a very through medical interview before giving the vaccine (hour long interview) but didn’t mention that at all (and I’d forgotten about it because it was years ago). We even covered bunions, ingrowing toenails, childhood illnesses etc.

JustMeAndWheatley · 18/04/2021 10:36

On,y mentioning because J&J operates in a very similar way to AZ

NeverForgetYourDreams · 18/04/2021 11:49

I had pre eclampsia 15 years ago and had my vaccine 4 weeks ago. No one asked me anything and at the time of writing this I'm fine. The pill has higher risks of blood clots I believe yet I take that every day and have done for 31 years

Jenasaurus · 18/04/2021 13:19

I had pre eclampsia with 2 of my DC and had no idea about links to long term issues. I have had 2 doses of AZ now, the last one on 1st April, I had no issue after the first but I have had 3 aural migraines where I have temporarily lost my vision within a week of having the second one. I am 56, overweight, I am losing weight but wonder if there is anything else I can do as reading up on this, I understand that 2 out of 3 pre eclampsia sufferers go on to have cardiac issues in later life.

Glitterblue · 20/04/2021 14:00

Thanks everyone. I had my text today to make an appointment, and it's on Thursday. I've emailed the surgery to see if I can find out which one it is, I didn't want to bother them on the phone because it sounds as if they're so busy with people phoning to ask when they will get their vaccine, from what they've said on their Facebook page!

@Jenasaurus do you suffer from migraines as a rule? I do, I hope I don't get one after it 😬 If you're on Facebook, there's a very informative group for pre eclampsia sufferers/people who have had it. It's called Pre eclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome survivors. I too am trying to lose weight and hope that I won't end up with cardiac issues later in life. I'd like to do anything I can to lowery chances.

For anyone else who's worried, my GP has responded to my email saying "this is not a contraindication".

I'm sure it would be more than her job was worth, to state this - in writing - if she wasn't confident it was OK...

Yes I do suffer with migraines although havent had any since going through the menopause 6 years ago. These recent ones are the only ones I have had and following my vaccine so whether its linked or a coincidence I am not sure, I have completed the yellow card though to help others with the same concerns.

Thanks for the link to the Facebook group I will join today

Hope your vaccine goes without any side effects
