All pregnant women in UK to be offered vaccine

BananaHammock23 · 16/04/2021 17:28

Just saw this story in the Guardian and thought it was interesting! www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/16/pregnant-women-offered-covid-vaccine-uk

I'm 23 weeks and will welcome the vaccine with open arms! Great that they're not offering AstraZenica but I wonder if this will exacerbate supply issues with Pfizer and Moderna

Great news! Smile

I’m due around the time of the great reopening (!) in June, and have no idea what will happen to case numbers around that time. Will feel so much more comfortable seeing people if I’ve been vaccinated

jupitermars1345 · 16/04/2021 18:24

Also due in the 2nd week of June and in group 18-29 so not likely to get it before pregnancy is over now / have much protection during pregnancy but I think this is great news

Anti vax nonsense. Miscarriage occurs in every 1 in 4 pregnancies in the U.K. and there’s zero evidence to suggest that the miscarriages after vaccination occurred above the normal threshold.

On the other hand, at the peak of the UK’s second wave, 10% of all people in ICU were women who were pregnant or had recently given birth.

Tealightsandd · 16/04/2021 18:46

That's good news.
Am I right in thinking they've found vaccine immunity can be passed on to unborn babies? I might be confusing what I've read. Something about a pregnant woman was vaccinated and then her baby was born with antibodies.

Wowthisisreal · 16/04/2021 18:50

Thank you for those stats @Circumlocutious

NommyChompers · 16/04/2021 18:53

Had the AZ one twice during pregnancy - all fine so far. Risk of COVID far higher...

loulouljh · 16/04/2021 18:54

You would be mad to take it unless underlying conditions...in my view.

Amrythings · 16/04/2021 18:57

Oh thank Christ, I've been fighting to get vaccinated since the Royal College issued that as their advice in February. My consultant is getting a rocket up him on Monday morning.

It seems the Daily Mail readers would agree with you.

Right 🙄 source?

Wowthisisreal

I wouldn't believe everything you read on MN

If or when case numbers rise significantly, there’ll be a cry of ‘well all the vulnerable have been vaccinated - what’s the problem??’

Except that pregnant women won’t have been, and they will be at increased risk (especially those in the final trimester). I’m very glad they’re being offered it now.

Girlmama3 · 16/04/2021 19:05

This is brilliant 😀 I’m 9+5 and desperate to have it. I have serious coronophobia. I also have secondary school aged children.

Really really pleased it won’t be the AZ jab as well!

Right 🙄 source?

At the peak of the current wave, 9% of all patients in intensive care in the UK were either pregnant or had recently delivered a baby, she said. “We’ve seen some really sick patients in the last trimester [of pregnancy], and we’ve seen a threefold increase in early deliveries.

I’m over the moon about this as been so stressed about not being able to get the vaccine and the risks Covid presents to mum and baby with increased ICU admission, preterm birth and Ireland have even found covid in the placenta in a few stillbirth cases - www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/pregnant-women-with-covid-19-are-less-likely-to-have-symptoms-and-may-more-likely-need-intensive-care/

Have reported as yet more scientific misinformation, Spontaneous abortion did not occur above levels you would expect in the general population.

If none were observed then this would be extremely surprising and suggest the vaccine was somehow preventing miscarriage.

Brabraboo · 16/04/2021 21:02

Never been so happy to read a headline related to bloody covid. We are having a nightmare at the moment with relatives insisting on returning to the U.K. with no plans to bother being vaccinated and FURIOUS with us that this makes us hesitant to have them stay with us or vice versa particularly around the time il be due. I will be heavily HEAVILY pregnant on the dates they wish to come back and feel like I’m trapped because they couldn’t give a shit about keeping me safe and I have no way of doing it myself unless we steer clear of them. They will be heavily socialising as that’s their nature, but all I could think of were the risks of catching a bad dose of bloody covid while heavily pregnant after everything we have done to avoid it so far. And even if that wasnt hugely likely, I really didn’t fancy testing positive and going into labour as a ‘positive case’. Friend had this happen and was treated like she had literal Ebola. Was left alone in labour for long periods and everything was very scary and complicated. She felt that people were more concerned with avoiding being in the room with her than taking care of her. I hope that’s quite an isolated incident though.

Anyway, sign me up.

So the messaging from JCVI is that pregnant women should be offered a vaccine based on their age group. But pregnant women are also technically in Group 6 no? (clinically vulnerable), so wouldn’t they be eligible for default?

This was my confusion!

I'm 32wks pregnant, so I'm in third trimester and judging by nhs clinical vulnerability pages it suggests pregnant women are clinically vulnerable.....

But we're only being vaccinated along with our age group cohort, instead of along with anyone else who might be clinically vulnerable? How does that work??

I'm thrilled they're finally opening it up to pregnant women. But honestly think we should be considered group 6 given the increased risks. As it stands, I'm early 30s and could be unlikely my age group will be called before my baby is delivered anyway.

Circumlocutious · 16/04/2021 21:46

@WaitingForNormality

Agreed. Pregnant women are either clinically vulnerable or they’re not, and that should determine when they’re offered the vaccine imo.

WaitingForNormality · 16/04/2021 21:50

@Circumlocutious I did read in the Guardian article about this topic that an organisation (think it's Pregnant and Screwed or something) that had been lobbying for pregnant women to be offered the vaccine in the UK are going to continue to lobby for pregnant women to be higher up in the priority list too. But the JCVI seem reluctant to ever change the order so I won't hold my breath!

Girlmama3 · 17/04/2021 13:57

In your last trimester your lung capacity is reduced due to the babies size. This makes you extremely vunerable to serious covid.

Pregnant women had the swine flu jab when the majority didn't. I had that while Pregnant and will definitely be having the covid vaccine.

DoveGreylove · 17/04/2021 14:28

I have such mixed feeling about it I just can't decide what I'm going to do!! But really pleased they've opened it up to pregnant women
