Worried about risk of blood clot.

So I’ve had my first dose of the az vaccine, I’m now to scared to get the 2nd which is due next week because of the blood clot risk. I’m 30 and under 30s are now being offered an alternative vaccine so I’m only just missing out, please don’t comment anything horrible I have a long history of depression and anxiety including health anxiety and I just know if I get his vaccine I’m going to convince myself I’ve got a blood clot.

I don’t no what to do.

The risk is minuscule compared to many commonly used medicines or catching covid its self

catherineofarrogance80 · 15/04/2021 22:36

I don't mean to sound dismissive but life is a game of weighing up pros and cons/risks and benefits
We can't deal in what ifs so have to use facts and statistics and the odds of not being effected are in your favour

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 15/04/2021 22:36

If you get covid you're much more likely to get a blood clot from it than you are from the vaccine.

catherineofarrogance80 · 15/04/2021 22:37

Put it this way if someone in the street offered to a raffle ticket to win a car but the odds were 1 in 250k would you fancy your chances?

LouLou198 · 15/04/2021 22:50

A GP I know who is very well respected in my area has just posted online that there have been 79 blood clot issues in the UK after the first dose out of 20.2 million doses. With a 4 hour flight your blood clot risk is 3 in 1000. In pregnancy it's 1-2 per 1000. Catching Covid itself raises the risk of blood clotting. I hope this reassures you.

Cookerhood · 15/04/2021 23:09

The risk of CVST is 8-10 times higher with Covid than with the vaccine. It's so very rare, just get jabbed.

LBNM19 · 16/04/2021 07:45

Thanks everyone for replying I know deep down that it is very rare but I just can’t help getting that feeling.

I’ve also had some very unfortunate ‘rare’ situations happen to me in the past which is probably why I’m like this.

I will speak to my GP this morning and then decide what to do.

OP I'm 28 and had AZ in Feb. Due my 2nd in May. DP (27) had his second dose on Saturday and had no side effects at all.

I'm going ahead with mine and I have health anxiety but reading stats helps me calm down.

Northernsoullover · 16/04/2021 07:51

Speak to your GP. If you have had the first then its likely the second will go smoothly. I know its a tough decision but I certainly wouldn't take my chances with covid.

mouldygrapes · 16/04/2021 08:02

All the cases of CVST have been with the first dose. If you’ve had that and were fine, the advice is to go ahead with the second

Yes I've read that if the first dose was fine, the second will be too. You'll be fine OP Smile

Marpan · 16/04/2021 08:14

I’m not going to take that one.
I’m 31.
My mums hair fell out when she had it.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 16/04/2021 08:16

marpan your mums hair fell out when she had the second dose of Oxford AstraZeneca Covid vaccine? Really?

Cookerhood · 16/04/2021 08:22
Grin
zzizzer · 16/04/2021 08:22

What, all of it? Arms and legs and eyebrows too? I'm honestly surprised that didn't become a national news story!

Abraxan · 16/04/2021 08:28

@Marpan

I’m not going to take that one. I’m 31. My mums hair fell out when she had it.
Had that been reported using the Yellow Card scheme. Seems an unusual reaction.
KihoBebiluPute · 16/04/2021 08:28

You may find these stats helpful.

Adverse events like blood clots happen sometimes anyway, for all sorts of reasons. The incidence of blood clots in the aftermath of the AZ vaccine is so low that there was no significant data about it at trials stage, it is only now that there are millions vaccinated that there is a measurable number. There is still stats work to be done to verify whether this measurable number is actually significantly greater than it would be without the jab, as that work requires a lot of reconciling of all the other risk factors for blood clots among all those who had the az vaccine, and looking at the differences in those factors in the handful who had a clot vs those who didn't, and that data is just not available yet.

Meanwhile the risks of Covid are very real and much greater, and it is known that you need a 2nd dose to consolidate your immunity and give you full protection. It would be very foolish to choose to take a known-to-be-high-risk decision (not having your 2nd jab) in order to avoid an as-yet-unquantified-but-definitely-small-risk possibility.

Worried about risk of blood clot.

I know it's hard to rationalise when you have health anxiety , I had my first one 2 weeks ago and counting down the days till I'm out of the so called danger zone, I have been terrified so I understand.
Im hoping I will feel much better when I get my next one as the data so far seems to look like it's pointing towards occurring after the first so try and take comfort in that...and speak to your gp about your concerns

paralysedbyinertia · 16/04/2021 12:44

@Iamtooknackeredtorun

If you get covid you're much more likely to get a blood clot from it than you are from the vaccine.
This. Your risk of that specific type of blood clot is far higher from covid than it is from the vaccine. Plus covid carries lots of other risks as well.

As far as I know, there haven't been any reports of clots after the second jab so far, so try not to worry. Flowers

NLM20 · 16/04/2021 12:50

I have also been stressed about this but found reassurance in the press briefing about there being no cases in second vaccinations. I looked up the yellow card on AstraZeneca as they release weekly stats and it said there’s been a single case in the second vaccinations although that person had a contributing underlying condition. I think around 8 million second doses have been given.

SmallTownSouthernGirl · 16/04/2021 12:52

Why mock the fact that Marpan's Mum's hair fell out? That can happen if the blood circulation to your hair roots has been impaired.

See the full list of adverse effects reported after the AZ vaccine. There is so much more than a few rare blood clots going on.

I've been following the medical journals because I've also got a blood clotting issue and have had first jab of AZ. To date, only people who reacted have reacted to the first jab. So if it wasn't a problem then, then you shouldn't see any issues on 2nd jab (because your body would have reacted the first time).

LBNM19 · 16/04/2021 13:24

Thanks so much everyone, it’s really good to know that there have been no cases with 2nd vaccines. I just started thinking it’s because not as many people have had it.

I was absolutely fine after my first one. All I got was a sore arm. I’ve booked for Thursday and GP is going to call me Monday to have a chat about it.

Hopefully I’ll go through with it.

@lisaw75 can totally relate to you and think I will probably do the same after I’ve had it, I no it’s going to cause me anxiety.
