AZ Vaccine already given to 20 yrs with SEN/Autism

Hi,

Hoping someone else may have the same question/worry?

My 20 yr old daughter has a learning disability/possibly autism and therefore got offered a Covid vaccine. Her GP rang me and we got a NHS official letter. I booked via the NHS website as the Dr's just weren't offering times to suit us. Didn't know which jab she'd have but she had the AZ jab and my hubby (50 +) had it the same day, 12th March.

The blood clot issue had just started being reported in other countries at the same time. I'm happy that she (and hubby) got done as believe its better to be protected from Covid.

Just wondering what's going to happen with the 2nd jab for her ? Can't mix and match jabs so she can't have the Moderna or Pfizer like under 29's are now being offered as 1st jabs. Do I let her have the AZ jab as planned or no 2nd jab ?

I haven't contacted the NHS or her GP to ask because I don't think they'd offer an opinion of what's best for her ? Or rather what should be done in this situation ?

Are any of you lovely Mumnetters experiencing the same with your son/daughter ?

Thanks so much xx

I would try and speak to GP.

I think it will be same vaccine.

I have seen it suggested the immune response is strongest with 1st dose. They are choosing to mix vaccines elsewhere and it was something suggested here before. But its not been tested fully yet. So there's every possibility that could ve higher risk than 2nd - we just don't know.

My Ds is 21 and got the AZ vaccine 3 weeks ago, due to an underlying condition. As far as I can tell, those under 30 who have had their first AZ are meant to go on and have the second.

Ds was pretty unwell after the first and was in bed for about 4 days. He's not keen on having the second one but I don't think there is a choice of anything else!

My daughter had her jab about 1.30pm, starting feeling headachy and tired about 6pm. Sent her off to bed with Panadol and water. She had the sweats during the night and a headache that wouldn't shift easily. Was better 24 hrs after the jab given. Hubby had a sore arm and that was it. Must be the age difference lol

I will speak to the GP nearer the time. Thanks

I listened to the press conference a few days ago and then they were saying that those in her position would get AZ for their second dose.

superblondie28 · 13/04/2021 21:09

Motorina - I thought that would be the case, either AZ or nothing. Its very unfortunate that she got invited so early on. A month later, and she'd be given one of the other jabs. I'm having my jab on Friday and am fully expecting it to be the AZ. Very few people have had the Pfizer jab actually. I'm still looking forward to getting it, but is weird, because I hate Needles !!!!

DS(23) had AZ in January and is due his second dose next week. He will be having it because that is the current advice. The risk is vanishingly small.
He had 24 hours of shivers and aches after the first dose, most people seem to be having much less reaction to 2nd dose.

heartandheart · 13/04/2021 22:53

The chance of blood clots is so so low. It's a much higher chance for women who are on the pill and this is still regularly prescribed without issue.

If your child has reacted ok to the first dose, I would try not to worry. I'm sure everything will be ok.

rtgiv · 13/04/2021 23:54

She'll be offered AZ for 2nd dose

As far as I understood the No AZ for under 30's actually means No AZ for healthy under 30's because the risks of covid to a healthy under 30 is slightly lower than the risks of AZ vaccine.

Sure, now there are ~250k doses of Moderna floating around in England (soon to be ~600k) - there aren't many Pfizer 1st doses around so she might have had a slim chance at getting a Moderna or Pfizer jab, bigger chance of covid IMHO.

The Risk/Benefit ratio for anyone under 30's with underlying health conditions still means the benefit outweighs the risks of AZ

rtgiv · 14/04/2021 00:04

Sorry guess healthy isn't the right word .. should probably be "No AZ for any under 30's who aren't in cohorts 1, 2, 4 or 6"

My son, 23 with autism had AZ and is due the second at the end of April. I didn’t really want him to have the first one but knew it would go to a best interests decision and I’d be over ruled. I haven’t been told any different so assume he’ll have the same again at the end of April.

Mindymomo · 14/04/2021 06:30

My autistic neighbour is 26 and friend who is 29 and has Down’s syndrome both have have AZ and are having the same second vaccine in a couple of weeks.

QuentininQuarantino · 14/04/2021 06:36

In Germany they’ve just announced they’ll give pfizer or moderna as the second dose. I’m in Spain and in a similar position as I’m young and had AZ but they have said they won’t give it as a second dose (bu haven’t said what they’ll do instead..) Grance I believe has said they’ll do it as a second dose for young people who’ve had it as the first. Have the UK said what the policy is?

nickyschof · 17/04/2021 06:25

When my 21 year old went for his (due to heart condition), he was told that he would probably have more severe reactions than older people, as the body is trying to fight off foreign bodies more than an older person's.

starfish4 · 17/04/2021 08:01

It's been stated younger ones will still get AZ if nothing else is available, so I don't see it as a major concern - my DD said she'd have it as she'd take the risk and fly if she could. It's definitely still on offer to younger ones, my friend's 19 year old DD has had it.

OP, can't remember how it was worded but it's thought that the blood clot risk is more likely 3-4 weeks after the first dose, so your DD has done the worst part..

superblondie28 · 08/05/2021 10:40

Thanks for all the input. I had my 1st jab on 16th April and it was AZ. I actually felt chuffed to get it 😊 Felt grotty the day after but OK the next day. As regards, my daughter, she's been fine. I've made myself aware of what to look out regarding the blood clots. My mum had a DVT last October and her leg swelled up,L and she had a stent put it, etc and even she's had her 2nd AZ jab. Just turned 75 yrs of age... I know it's not the same type of blood clot as the AZ ones. I will be ok with letting my daughter have her 2nd jab as long as she wants it 🤞 thanks all xx
