Cousin just told me they are in lockdown with cases rising.
Is this a second or third wave for them and anyone any idea why it's so bad there.

My boss lives in Ontario - it’s the same as Europe. The Kent strain has taken hold & they are very slow to vaccinate.

My boss is 50+ and has had his first dose of Pfizer but has to wait 16 WEEKS for his next dose 😱 due to the shortage of vaccines..

Yes I have family there and they’ve just gone back into lockdown for at least a month. Very slow with vaccine rollout, my relatives in their mid 50s are very frustrated, they won’t be vaccinated until autumn at the earliest.

Reddit has a fairly active Canada corona board that might be able to give you a better idea of how things are there www.reddit.com/r/CanadaCoronavirus/

Aw thanks, she was rushing sorting stuff out so couldn't explain much, I'm just being nosey but it's very interesting hearing about other areas.
I hope they catch up with the vaccine soon.
So sorry for your family Ozzie. Thanks

I read something about P1 in British Columbia.

23 covid 19 related deaths across the whole of Canada for April 11th
ICUs at high capacity, as they often are in most countries

Non essential goods blocked off in shops.

Familiar stuff.

It’s a third wave. Cases rising quite sharply. Went into a province wide shutdown over the Easter weekend, upgraded to a stay at home order last week. Some regions eg Toronto haven’t really left stringent conditions since November.

Today the province switched all schools to remote learning, starting on Monday when schools resume after the week long March break which was moved to April. No provisional return date (DC gutted) Based on data, the greater concern here isn’t spread within schools, but cases being brought into schools from the wider community. Our experience has been single cases in our local schools but no outbreaks, The local health officer stopped in-person education ahead of the provincial order due to a steep rise in positive tests just before/at the Easter weekend.

Vaccine availability is low despite the numerous contracts in place, continued delays in deliveries so fingers crossed that improves. We are in the general low priority group, so waiting patiently and hopefully. Listening to vaccine roll out in other countries feels like being marooned on an island and watching ships sail by.

Due to the restrictions and doing my best to keep compliant, I haven’t met with friends socially in over a year or travelled to be with family. Non-essential shops being closed, I can survive that. I am really really grateful that healthcare services such as physiotherapy, dentists etc have been permitted to remain open and our lovely library offers a kerbside pick up service and has expanded online services.

Last week an order went out to stop all non-essential surgery; hospitals can now move patients to other hospitals without patient consent in order to provide best care. Sick Kids in Toronto is now making available a few ICU beds to treat people up to the age of 40.

The B 1.1.7 variant is rapidly dominating amongst the cases detected in Ontario. Increasing cases are linked to this but it’s also believed to be driven by a number of socio-economic factors as well. P1 on the west coast. I just hope it doesn’t spread here anytime soon.

And cabin fever tends to strike once a day at least..... but we have a house, clean water, a garden, internet access, food, income and health. I try to remind myself how fortunate I am to be safe at home, not stuck at home, Plants are poking through the ground, buds on trees are rapidly getting fatter, birds are returning. Seasons change and I live in hope.

daretodenim · 13/04/2021 05:37

Wow. I hadn't been checking on Canada because I understood the country have bought 5x the required number of vaccines so I just assumed they were happily vaccinating away! I've been waiting to see where they gave the excess vaccines to (as it was announced they would). I had no idea they didn't actually have these vaccines though!

mermaidsariel · 13/04/2021 10:25

I have relatives in Ontario and a brother in law. I didn’t realise things were quite this bad.

mamakoukla · 13/04/2021 11:47

@daretodenim it really has been frustrating reading some of the reporting and sloppy journalism, especially with respect to the angle that gets put onto things re Canada and vaccines. In the past few months I’ve read on a number of foreign media outlets what a disgrace this country is for actually claiming its Covax entitlement and for having such an excess of doses ordered. I completely get that every country has a duty to its people and each is doing their best to ensure that this is achieved. But please, we are claiming Covax doses because we are desperate, and we are claiming the half order we applied for and the other half order does go to countries in need. So many reports but half stories not reflecting the number of times shipments have been delayed or not met. Lucky to be safe at home.
