Was this to be expected?

But yesterday was very low. If you look at yesterday and today together it is about the same as the previous 2 days. Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if there was a small uptick from Easter mixing.

Delatron · 12/04/2021 18:57

If you look on the data thread it’s a case of them adding in cases missed from between Jan and March. So old cases. Which is misrepresentative I think.
Deaths still low and hospitalisations.

PatriciaHolm · 12/04/2021 18:58

Over 1,000 of them are catch-ups from before April; it's nothing to worry about, just a data sort out which happens occasionally.

SpnBaby1967 · 12/04/2021 18:58

It's still a reduction of 20% week on week Confused

AgeLikeWine · 12/04/2021 19:01

The 7 day rolling average is the important trend to keep an eye on. Hospitalisations & deaths are still falling fast, which suggests the vaccines are doing their job, both in preventing serious illness and breaking chains of transmission.

Bordois · 12/04/2021 19:03

Yep, as others have said over 1000 of them are backdated cases - some of them from march 2020

If I was the type of person to buy into conspiracies I'd be wonder if the timing was deliberate...

Tealightsandd · 12/04/2021 19:04

@TelstarPonies

Was this to be expected?
Yes. SAGE reports said it would happen.

Hopefully this time round the vaccine rollout will help make a difference, but we do need to listen to Boris (and the scientists) and remain aware and alert. Open up but cautiously so. This is not a time for complacency.

Loveisthehope · 12/04/2021 19:04

Bordois you clearly are that type of person then Hmm

TelstarPonies · 12/04/2021 19:05

@AgeLikeWine yes the vaccine breaks the chain. Gosh I hope and pray for no variants.

OP posts:
Delatron · 12/04/2021 19:06

I wondered that too @Bordois

Most people won’t be aware that they are backdated cases. They are announced as today’s total. The day we are opening up and it looks like cases are rising. Just to make sure people don’t relax too much. Hmmm. I could be overthinking it but it seems suspicious to me that they’ve suddenly found lots of old cases.

I understand why deaths may be added in if they’ve been missed but cases should reflect what is happening in current time. Otherwise what’s the point? It doesn’t give us any good info.

Standrewsschool · 12/04/2021 19:07

But only 7 deaths today, so that’s really good news.

Bordois · 12/04/2021 19:07

Clearly 🙄
Bordois · 12/04/2021 19:08

And even when the explanation is posted it gets ignored anyway 🤷‍♀️

It should be something along the lines of new cases in the last 7 days and then an additional figure for any others
Delatron · 12/04/2021 19:09

I fail to see how adding in cases from March 2020 to today’s case rate is helpful information.

Delatron · 12/04/2021 19:11

Yes reporting should be clearer. Cases from last 7 days and anything before that separate I agree.

TelstarPonies · 12/04/2021 19:33

It’s the complacency that concerns me. And what’s happening worldwide. Surely it’s a look before you leap type scenario rather than ‘glass half empty’. @SummerHouse

OP posts:
MaxNormal · 12/04/2021 19:35

They found some old cases down the back of the sofa and bunged them onto today's figures. But don't let that get in the way of a good panic.

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 12/04/2021 19:35

THIS.....

Only 7 deaths......

Focus on that @TelstarPonies

SummerHouse · 12/04/2021 19:38

But as I said, yesterday, cases were the lowest they have been since September. Looking before you leap is quite right. But have a good look, as far as you can see, rather than one days figures which are skewed.

TelstarPonies · 12/04/2021 19:44

@GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam I do hope it stays like that. IF cases rise, there is always the lag effect before death rates increase. So I don’t think it’s possible to say how easing restrictions will effect us yet.

OP posts:
MrsHastingslikethebattle · 12/04/2021 19:48

Surely you will get more cases if there is mass testing of healthy people?

Most people dont know they have Covid until they take a test.

secretllama · 12/04/2021 20:04

Ffs the obsession with cases needs to stop.

Daisydoor12 · 12/04/2021 20:10

Very convenient on the day the country is opening up! Importantly deaths and hospital admissions still falling. Cases are bound to rise but as long as NHS isn’t overwhelmed surely we can progress along the road map.
