Advice is NOT to take aspirin before AZ vaccine

There seems to be some misinformation being spread about this. Please read the advice from Beverley Hunt, professor of thrombosis and haemostasis at King’s College London and a representative of Thrombosis UK.

"There has been no advice that anyone should take medication to prevent rare clotting events. Hunt cautioned against taking aspirin, stressing it is thought the clotting problems are down to an immune response.

“So taking aspirin is not going to be helpful. Taking an anticoagulant probably isn’t going to be helpful, especially if you are going to get a low platelet count, it will increase your risk of bleeding,” she said. “And we know if you take aspirin and you don’t need to take aspirin the benefits aren’t very good and there is a risk that you can bleed spontaneously.”"

Also bear in mind that in the UK aspirin is thought to contribute to around 3000 deaths per year and 20,000 bleeds.

I think MN need to be a bit more responsible at the moment and remove threads which are advocating self medicating etc.....

Great post.

Beverley Hunt is my main source of information about blood clots, first with covid and now with AZ. She's brilliant.

@OpheliasCrayon I agree, there have been several over the last week asking about what dose etc should be taken. It is quite worrying just how much some people have got this out of all perspective.
I can see more harm coming from people following threads on here and self medicating.

There was a thread yesterday afternoon that MN did delete as people were reporting it - about the AZ vaccine. I guess if we just keep reporting things they may delete them...
I mean this is just dangerous - self medicating with anything really - MN should be putting a stop to this

I agree about MN taking more responsibility - they need to do the same with posters who are flooding the boards with anxiety inducing threads and posts about the AZ vaccine.

It does seem that there is much more confidence about the AZ vaccine in real life, though.

@pinkearedcow exactly! I wonder why so many on here are happy to believe whatever nonsense they read on these boards. I wonder if any of them have ever read the information leaflet on a pack of asprin, ibuprofen or even cough syrup.
There seems to be a constant flow of threads along the lines of I had the Jab 4 weeks ago and now I have a sore ear, is it a side effect? Then other posters telling them to call the GP, go to A&E etc.
As you say back in the real world people seem very much to just be getting on with it and nowhere near the levels of hysteria that can be seen on here.

It’s been a thoroughly depressing read on the coronavirus pages this week.

I really feel for the EDs and GPS who are dealing with the fallout from the new findings.

Beverly Hunt is my new favourite follow on Twitter. Thank you for the link.
