America is doing well.

Population of around 350 million.

Biden's target is every adult over the age of 18 to be offered their 1st dose by 19 April.

As they're on the Pfizer and Moderna 3 week schedule, the majority of adults should be fully vaccinated by mid-late May.

Some places are already onto 16 and 17 year olds.

America has a similar roadmap to opening up as we do. Difference is when they fully open in June, they'll be doing it safely.

Watching with interest as hope to visit Florida next year. They're doing really well with their vaccination programme. What I find odd, though, is that some states seemingly don't have that much "opening up" to do. We follow a lot of Florida vloggers on YouTube and I know all the theme parks there have been open for quite some time. Whereas in California, the Disney parks are only just opening? Strange how different states have different rules.

The US is more like the EU than a country. It's no different than Spain and France having different rules.

Really?? My 60 year old uncle lives in LA and on 2 March told me they were only doing over 65s and health workers. I've been worried about him as if he was here he would have had first dose in Feb.

Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 11:52

He should've been offered it by now @bonbonours
California was meant to offer to all 50+ from April 1st, with everyone 16+ from April 15. I guess it might be a bit slower on the ground and offering isn't the same as actually giving it.

"America" has nothing like the restrictions we do, and nothing like the road map out of them. They have all sorts of different restrictions in different places, it's also reasonably clear that the offering is not quite the same as actually having it, there are huge regional differences with some places you're unable to get an appointment, and others where it's easy.

Being offered it, but having to travel 6 hours to actually get a jab is not quite the same.

Of course they are still through vaccine nationalism hoarding doing a great job vaccinating overall, it's by no means easy.

I’ve just posted the same on a different thread, but they have vaccinated less than us (40% adults, 75% 65+ vs 60% and 95% here), so they have less of their vulnerable protected, being eligible doesn’t mean everyone has had it.

And they have never been as restricted as we have in many states

I was wondering about the US as well earlier. I have friends there and everyone in their 40s and 30s seems to have their appointment booked now (some even complaining it's as "late" as 15th April!).

Although it sounds like there are also a lot of variations between different areas and even more so issues with the most vulnerable not being able to get an appointment (especially if they don't have a smart phone/internet at home).

This is an interesting change in position from Biden especially taken in conjunction with ruling out vaccine passports. Emphasis is obvs moving towards individual responsibility for taking the vaccine if offered as opposed to quasi compulsion to take the vaccine to protect everyone else and allow society to open up.

Even California is not making reopening conditional on take up but rather on everyone eligible having been offered (unless I am mistaken).
