Tranexamic acid and vaccine

Hi,

Anyone take tranexamic acid and have any thoughts on the Astrazeneca vaccine? I take TA for three days every month for heavy periods, it works by causing the blood to clot, and has an increased risk of blood clots. Up until now I've been desperate to get my vaccine, but it occurred to me when I started taking the TA the other day, what if the blood clot risk concern is true. My sister lives in Canada, is three years younger than me (I'm 41) and they've suspended its use over there for under 55s, and have specified that women in particular are at increased risk. Otherwise I'm quite low risk for blood clots, maybe slightly overweight but that's it.

Anybody else who takes tranexamic acid have any worries about this? I'm thinking about getting an online consultation with the GP, but don't want to be "that" patient who reads something on the internet and instantly goes to their GP about it. If there wasn't another vaccine available, I'd probably go ahead and have it. But because there is, I'm wondering if I should be given or not given a particular one. I don't know, I want to get vaccinated, and I'm probably due to get called relatively soon, but it is playing on my mind a bit. I probably will email the GP, but thought I'd ask here if anybody had similar worries.

I meant to say I also think it's a sensible question!!

Doc called yesterday (on a Saturday? Unheard of!) and basically told me not to worry. Apparently tranexamic acid can cause a problem if a woman also takes the combined pill, which I do not. So it's recommended I go ahead with whatever vaccine is available, and continue to take the tranexamic acid as normal. As has been said above, the TA leaves the body quickly, so if I can, I may schedule the vaccine for a few days after I expect to stop taking it, just to ease my own mind.

As I said in my first post, I didn't want to be "that patient" who rings the GP unnecessarily, but he did say that this was a very valid and sensible question, so if any of you have worries, do ring them.

Thanks for the update!

Thank you for coming back and updating OP.

Hopefully now anyone reading this thread will not stop taking a medication they have been prescribed for a very real medical issue.

Stopping your medication without speaking to your GP is going to put you at way more risk thank the minuscule risk of the jab.

It’s been mentioned on another thread that the advice is also not to take aspirin. Again the risk is much greater and it is counterintuitive.

Thank you beetlecrusher, this is reassuring. My periods are all over the place so am not sure where it will fit in with my second vaccine; good to know I can still take the TA if needed x

DrunkenKoala · 12/04/2021 08:21

Thank you Beetlecrusher that’s good to know. I’ll try and schedule the vaccine outside of my period, I have a rough idea of when it’s due but not down to the date unfortunately.

I was going to say i take tranexamic acid and have one of the blood clotting Diseases that means I can't have the AZ vaccine. So I'd assume tranexamic acid I'd fine as im still able to take it despite that. Although I don't know how wonky that logic is!

HazeyJaneII · 12/04/2021 08:35

I was having my period, and taking tranexamic acid (3 x a day for 4 days) when I had my AZ vaccine (No big news at the time about blood clots and I couldn't have Pfizer due to allergies).

In this month's period (a month later) I startef having throbbing pains in my leg, and an enlarged vein which I have had since my 3rd pregnancy, started feeling inflamed. I had taken 3 doses of Tranexamic acid, but stopped and rang the GPs. I had a face to face appointment with a paramedic practitioner, who measured and felt my leg and said that it was more likely an inflamed vein, but to keep an eye on it for signs of it getting worse. I asked about tranexamic acid and the vaccine, but he said he didn't really know and that I should stop the tablets and make an appointment with a GP (which I had already tried!!)
Anyway, I've got a phone appointment with a GP on Weds, and have now had a week of very heavy bleeding after stopping tranexamic acid. The throbbing in my leg has subsided, but I don't know if that is related.
I'm due to have the second vaccine in May, so will ask GP about that.
The uncertainty, speculation and general wishy washiness of it all makes you worry and then feel daft for worrying. I bloody hate it.

I was searching for information on this topic a couple weeks ago and came across your discussion board. I ended up following up with my GP, and she said there are no concerns with TXA and the AZ vaccine. The wording she used is that the mechanism for for the vaccine is totally different than how the medication impacts the body. Thought I would share.

Bugsy73 · 01/05/2021 09:38

Thankyou MelissaAnn, I had my second jab a week ago and period is due imminently so this is helpful.

I have asked about it when taking AZ vaccine and the pharmacist on site said it is ok to take.

Hi. I'm from Brazil and this forum helped me with the doubts I had about the AZ vaccine and TXA.
