Masks

How long do you think people will have to wear face masks? Has any guidance been issued on this or will they be scrapped in June?

dementedpixie · 06/04/2021 10:55

I see them being here for the foreseeable future tbh. I dont mind masks that much. Keeps your face warm on a cold day too

Mrsjayy · 06/04/2021 10:57

I think masks will be last to go I wouldn't want to pin an exact time on it but I think it will be after June. I don't mind a mask I've got used to them .

Cornettoninja · 06/04/2021 10:58

I agree. I don’t think masks in public indoor spaces are going to be done away with this year at the very least. Depending on how things go I would expect conversations about withdrawing them spring 2022.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/04/2021 10:58

Sooner the better. Hideously awful things. I'm the person who is ripping it off my face the very second I emerge from the shops.

I really don't see the justification for them after the vulnerable are vaccinated.

Mrsjayy · 06/04/2021 10:59

And all the road maps are ifs and buts nothing is definate.

ChristinaYang10 · 06/04/2021 11:00

I think they’ve said they are being considered in a review that will look at mask wearing, social distancing, and the “work from home where possible” guidance. I believe that review is due to be finished in June/July.

Racoonworld · 06/04/2021 11:02

Masks will be one of the last things to go as they are the simplest and cheapest restriction to have. I don't like them and wish we didn't have them, but I think they will be around until next spring.

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2021 11:03

Not any time soon. Not really worth speculating about. I wear one all day for work so I get a bit Hmm about people moaning about wearing one for 10 minutes in a shop.

Jo99996 · 06/04/2021 11:04

I suspect from whenever the last step is take (the one planned for 21st June) then lots of people will take the decision themselves to not wear them at which point enforcement becomes impossible

Dementedswan · 06/04/2021 11:07

I can see why they may stay. However as a deaf person who relies on lip reading, I need them gone so I can join in with society.

I cant be the only one struggling with them. I don't mind wearing them, I just cannot communicate. With things opening up I simply won't be able to join in.

OP posts:
Grapesoda7 · 06/04/2021 11:09

I think masks will stay until next year. Social distancing is to be reviewed by June 21st, but seems to be looked at seperatly to businesses opening up.

I know vulnerable adults have been vaccinated, but what about vulnerable children or teenagers? There is no jab for under 18s yet. If a 15 year old with cystic fibrosis wanted to go for a family meal and social distancing and masks had been scrapped before a jab was approved for vulnerable young people, how would it work?

BadMudda · 06/04/2021 11:10

They're here to stay I think for the foreseeable future

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/04/2021 11:10

I certainly won’t be going to a cinema, theatre, live gig etc if I have to wear a mask.

Grapesoda7 · 06/04/2021 11:12

From a personal view, I will be glad when they're gone. My son is medically exempted from wearing a mask, but is avoiding going into shops as he feels wary about people's reaction to him not wearing one.

It must be hard OP, I hope masks go as soon as possible.

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2021 11:12

My Mum is deaf and struggles too. TBF masks are a barrier to communication full stop, lots of muffled mutterings from behind the fabric and you can't get close enough to hear properly (and that's with perfect hearing). Plus you can't pick up any facial signals or smiles which are important in conversation.

Small progress in that we can sit outside and eat at the pub from the 12th and we can take the masks off to do so.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/04/2021 11:12

@AlecTrevelyan006

I certainly won’t be going to a cinema, theatre, live gig etc if I have to wear a mask.
Or a museum, art gallery, stately home, craft show......

The pleasure of a mooch around a museum is completely wiped out if you have to wear a mask.

kittensarecute · 06/04/2021 11:12

Masks are okay but I need social distancing gone yesterday.

ILoveAfternoonTea · 06/04/2021 11:14

Can't see them not being a requirement until at least another twelve months

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2021 11:16

I will keep my own personal social distancing. I like that bit. Grin

SGChome20 · 06/04/2021 11:16

I saw a woman speaking on tv saying they’d be here ‘for a few years’ don’t know who she was but looked official, I’ll try and find out who it was.

Racoonworld · 06/04/2021 11:17

This is the problem though isn't it. There is always going to be one group who misses out. Like you say, there are people who can't communicate with masks and so need masks to go. As @Grapesoda7 says there are people who need masks to stay longer. I have no idea what the solution is, and who will 'win', but there will certainly be some groups who won't be happy with whatever is decided.

I hope not! I feel the deaf have been forgotten about long enough. I would just like to be able to go to a shop and take my dc to school.

This is me too. Loathe the things. They will never become ‘normal’ for me, and while I can tolerate them for short periods, I find they massively hamper communication and connection with others and I can’t relax or actively enjoy anything while I’m wearing one.

Looks like it’s functional activities only for me for the foreseeable future!

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2021 11:20

I bet there's loads of people that have to wear one all day for work that would love to be ripping them off their faces...

HereComesATractor · 06/04/2021 11:20

That sounds a real challenge OP, and I hope for your sake it’s not for such a long time that you are excluded on an ongoing basis from things that other people are enjoying.

I don’t mind them if I only have to look after myself, but they are a challenge with small children in tow (my toddler is harder to communicate with, my baby tries to pull it off my face etc) so it restricts the places I will choose to go with them from a leisure POV as things open up. Yes I know people wear them all day at work and it makes me feeble blah blah.
