Who thinks that this lockdown feels as though it’s gone on a lot longer than the first one? I mean I know the first time around we were in lockdown from what March to July? but I felt it went a lot quicker than it has done this time. Last year was hard but i managed and kept ourselves busy. I’ve tried to do the same this time but omg it’s been so hard. I know that the end (hopefully) is in sight but I feel like I have no patience, I’m snappy more so than I ever etc. There aren’t many things I’m going to run out to do once everything is lifted but I’m desperate to go to the cinema and enjoy watching a film ON MY OWN! I’m dying to go out for a meal with my dh who I’ve not been out with (child free) for two years and really want to take my dc on a day out etc. Like I said I realise things are looking up and we just have to hang on that bit longer, so why is it so hard? We’ve all been through this before but for me at least I just haven’t the tolerance or patience I had the first time around. Anyone else feel the same?

I might have it wrong but I thought things started really opening up in July? I remember being able to see my mum and dad in their garden at the end of June but I don’t think shops hairdressers and hospitality owned up until July.

The first time we were both furloughed till july. The money was still rolling in and the sun was shining. We discovered all sorts of places to get nice food and wine deliveries from and we read books, played games and gardened and went on walks and came in every day for the daily briefing. No one we knew was ill and for me it was the most relaxing time I've probably ever had. This time I'm back at work at two unsafe jobs. My husband is working from home. The kids have gone to pot and the disease has been all around us. We haven't seen any friends or relatives since before Christmas and we still don't really want to. We are all still scared. Coming out of lockdown doesn't feel real or even welcome yet. I think because it has dragged on so long it feels like it always will be like this

SmidgenofaPigeon · 05/04/2021 16:26

@Stillgoings what are the unsafe jobs? What are you scared of?

Retrievemysanity · 05/04/2021 16:37

Yes, this one feels longer. As pp’s have said, last year, lockdown coincided with the lovely weather, it was all a bit of a novelty and I think lots of people thought a couple of months and we’ll be back to normal. Reality has hit home for most people now and lockdown fatigue is a real thing. It’s been a long, hard winter with goalposts moving and changing and I think there’s still a lot of uncertainty about the future playing on people’s minds.

hellcatspangle · 05/04/2021 16:47

I've struggled more this time round. I think with the first one it was a bit of a novelty...I got furloughed from work which was nice, baked bread and did jigsaws 😬 this time round I'm just sick of everyone being at home and want normal life back!

Bluntness100 · 05/04/2021 16:50

I think it’s becayse this one was over thr winter months, so the last one was good weather and sitting in the garden and going for walks etc was much more pleasant. Lockdown in the cold and wet is shit. In addition it’s kind of an “groan again” feeling. So it’s on top of the last one, which makes it worse again.

TristantheTyrannosaurus · 05/04/2021 16:51

Not just you. This is ridiculous.

ZiggyBaby · 05/04/2021 17:04

Yes. January seems like an age ago.

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/04/2021 17:49

@MereDintofPandiculation

I mean I know the first time around we were in lockdown from what March to July? It was shorter, wasn't it? It didn't start till 22nd March or thereabouts. I remember shielders were told to shield till end June, and the rest of the population were released from lockdown by then, weren't they?
So last week of Mar to mid? end? July - Just over 4 months at worst.

We won't be "really opening up" till May 12, so doesn't it make this one four and a half months?

OK, pretty trivial difference between the two. One reason this feels longer to me is that where I am, apart from Christmas which was of no use to me whatever, we've been pretty well locked down since about the beginning of November.

Dementedswan · 05/04/2021 17:54

Living in an area that's never really come out of tier 3... since November? I think... this lockdown has been longer. Things opened up last summer, we ate out. We visited in gardens etc. The weekly clap, it was all a sense of we are all in this together. But in my area we have been pretty much lockdown since November. So yes, this time round its been longer and harder.

bumbleymummy · 05/04/2021 17:55

@WhatMattersMost No, this year we have vaccines and over 50% of the population are immune after infection/vaccination.

ChocOrange1 · 05/04/2021 18:02

No I feel this one is much easier, because we have a roadmap and things to look forward to. Last time it was just no idea how long it could go on for.
Also being able to meet friends, even if its just one at a time outdoors, made everything so much more bearable.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 05/04/2021 18:04

It is much easier to live with restrictions if there is daylight into the evenings and if you have a garden, you can be out in it.

lljkk · 05/04/2021 18:06

People disagree about what lockdown is or isn't. So hard to say objectively. For me this feels about the same as end March- late June 2020, but basically closed places have been shut since 24 December and still aren't open again before 12 April or later... so truly it's actually been longer this time.

AstraZenecaisprettyforagirl · 05/04/2021 18:11

I genuinely don't understand this one even though it seems to be the MN & RL consensus. Being locked down, for me, is MUCH easier when it's cold outside and dark by 5pm. I positively want to work from home wrapped in a blanket and in my PJs then. With light nights and warmer weather the nightmarish oddness of the pandemic is magnified a million fold for me. I felt absolute dread on the day the clocks went forward.

iamnotok · 05/04/2021 18:27

First lockdown was OK, no expectations, few obligations other than work.

This lockdown is like a year's worth of obligations have been saved up and dumped all at once.

All the schoolwork, exam preparation, work experience requirements, hospital appointments, orthodontists, etc etc etc. Everyone expects that we must do these things and attend (even in December the hospital thought I was being unreasonable to decline an outpatients appointment in a hospital full of covid patients). My calendar is busy every day and I can't even visit my own family yet.
It is total shit. Everyone who can dump an obligation on someone else has done so, no more excuses you have to do all this crap now even though it is lockdown....

A week ago I could get pulled over and fine for driving 5 miles for a walk and not able to meet my family outside yet every other damn obligation in life was still required and expected.

Too recent to have had a correlation until very recently - probably the last three or four weeks.
