Whooping cough!

I suspect my 10 month baby has whooping cough. Both my sons have had a cold this past week but my youngest has developed a little, none continuous cough which is suspectingly started to sound absolutely identical to whooping cough. I'm gonna get him at the doctors in the morning, but just wanted to check if anyone knew what the process may be? I'm worried they will send us to a Covid surgery or something like that with it being regarding a cough?
Both my sons have their regular immunisations, but my eldest was still unlucky enough to get whooping cough when he was a baby too!

Glad he is doing better OP. I had no idea that you could still getting whooping cough after being vaccinated. Though obviously recent experience with the covid vaccines suggests this is likely to case to some extent or other depending on the particular bug/vaccine.

Dustyhedge · 05/04/2021 20:51

UmbilicusProfundus Mine was fully vaccinated. The doctors said it probably saved her from being very poorly indeed and needing admission ie the vaccine worked to reduce severity so was still important.

It isn't as rare as you might think. My town had a massive outbreak a couple of years ago. Many many people came down with it in a range of ages from primary school age to adults.
PHE were involved, but most people didn't seek treatment. Only those who were really ill did.
Most of those who caught it had been vaccinated.
IIRC the vaccination wears off, although I guess there must be more involved than that based on the numbers of primary school aged children who caught it. I guess the vaccine worked in that they didn't die or get seriously ill, but many of them had it.

There are two strains of whooping cough, and while the vaccine has done well at preventing the vaccine strain, it has allowed the other strain to increase somewhat, but it is still fairly rare.

Does he whoop with a vomit?

MrsBlondie · 05/04/2021 23:02

Poor baby.
My 14 year old had whooping cough last year. He was vomiting as he coughed so hard. Fully vaccinated too.

SianyBabe1 · 14/09/2021 08:48

Oh, that's awful. I had this 3 years ago and lost 2 stone due to the excessive vomiting. Had about 20+ attacks a day. Also vaccinated. My little sister also had it, but she was only sick a couple of times.

Well done, OP. Hope he is better soon and that nobody else in your family catches it.

WC is not as rare as people think. I know a couple of people who had it as adults. The vaccine isn't perfect.

Sorry to hear your update OP, hopefully w early treatment your baby will have a mild case.

Whooping cough is the second worst illness I've ever had (COVID gets top billing) and no. 1 on Dh's list of bloody awful things to catch. You've done very well to get it diagnosed early. I ended up being diagnosed by my parents neighbour, a retired gp - my own practise nurse totally missed it despite me telling her I was coughing until passing out. Angry

I was told the vaccine lasts 40 years and I got it when I was 42.
