Support bubbles and distance

DM lives by herself, 250 miles away. We formed a bubble with her and saw her a couple of times last summer, but not since the end of July, when my area was put into what later became Tier 3.

Am I correct in thinking that there are no distance travel restrictions on support bubbles? I’m off work this week, the dc are both off school. Could we form a bubble again and go and visit? DM has not bubbled with anyone else, and is desperately lonely.

We have been very cautious, and I am more than happy to be told I can’t, or shouldn’t go, but it has just dawned on me that I might be able to. I’d take the DC. DS(12) is LFT testing twice weekly. DM and I have had our first vaccinations. I also have dd (9). DH would stay at home.

My concerns are -we’d have to stop somewhere for a wee, probably only once; what if we bought something back to dh (too young for age related vaccination yet).

I’d value your thoughts. I’m very undecided.

There are no travel restrictions on support bubbles. There never has been. Guidance is to form a bubble locally if possible but it is not law.
You can also stay over night. Go and see your DM.

Yes you can legally go.
I'd do it but try not to take wee stops, or masks in the toilet.
Could you bring DM back with you for a couple of weeks if she's been lonely?

I honestly can’t even work out the tiny odds of one of you picking up Covid in a wee stop and managing to bring it home. Entire classes of children in close quarters all day are not catching it from their peers.

Everything you describe is perfectly reasonable, and allowed within current rules.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/04/2021 11:22

Yes, it's allowed.

Thank you all.

YES!!!! I’m going to see my mum!!!

MRex - we don’t have a very big house.,we never had a spare room, and now we’ve squeezed in 2 people working from home, and she has 2 big dogs.

Ah. Well enjoy your holiday!

I think I'd test my 9 year old too if I were you. They are the biggest risk here, mixing at school and not being tested.

Never has been travel restrictions for support bubbles have been visiting ours throughout even though they are a distance away. There are no travel restrictions within England at all now and there has never been any law against any travel within England even in full lockdown. Also the chance of getting covid on a “wee stop” are very slim to none people really need to get a grip now and start acting like normal human beings again (not aimed at you OP)
