DS has normal body temp of 35.6, so is 37.3 a temperature for him?

DS aged 15 is not feeling well today and says he feels like he has a temp. Readings have been no higher than 37.3. However, he has always had a lowish normal body temp of roughly 35.6 so todays temp is relatively high for him. But everything I have read says this it has to be over 37.8 to be a temp, end of. From a covid perspective this is making me slightly twitchy - can anyone medical advise whether I ought to get him tested?

No. 37.3 is not a high temperature for anyone.
Suspect you just have a crap thermometer

Akire · 31/03/2021 17:00

I know what you mean my Normal temp is 36.3 so 37.3 is same as someone else having a 38.3 official temperature. If it’s higher than normal that’s the important thing. No harm getting a test plenty of them around.

MHA65 · 31/03/2021 17:00

No OhDearShirley, thermometer is fine, we all use it.

If his chest feels hot to the touch get him tested that's the advice for anyone who doesn't have a thermometer and IMO when calling 111 they always ask that question and don't seem to rely on thermometer readings done at home. Hope he feels better soon.

NotCurrently · 31/03/2021 17:48

As someone who has never used a thermometer, I would say if he is warm to touch and says he feels like he has a temperature - he probably has a temperature! Just get a touch

NotCurrently · 31/03/2021 17:48

Get a test I mean! And it didn’t mean to sound so rude - sorry

HSHorror · 31/03/2021 17:53

He feels feverish get him a test.

Im similar my temp was low when i had glandular fever i had sweats etc and felt awful.

I now have hypothyroidism so have low body temp.

littlebillie · 31/03/2021 18:02

37.5 and above is when hospitals consider it a temperature, but they may not medicate until much higher

OpheliasCrayon · 31/03/2021 18:28

The covid guidelines have alwsys said a temp is 37.8 + or if you / your child feels hot to the touch

Standrewsschool · 31/03/2021 18:30

If you have concerns, then definitely get tested.

However, I would say it’s a slight temperature, rather than a fever.

middleager · 31/03/2021 22:58

If he's 15 is he testing for school?
Mine are that age and do a test every Sun and Weds evening.

HSHorror · 01/04/2021 00:16

Cant use lft for symptoms though would agree this is possibly a grey area re whether it is symptoms.
Are you taking temp morning or evening. Morning will be lower. Fevers tend to be higher at night.

DareIask · 01/04/2021 03:15

Yes 37.3 is a raised temperature and in my case enough to make me feel a bit poorly.

Doesn't he have LFTs?

Any other symptoms?

Imnotaslimjim · 01/04/2021 03:23

Kiss him on the forehead, if it feels hot to your lips, he has a raised temp. Does he have any other symptoms other than feeling generally unwell?

Missypuff30 · 01/04/2021 08:55

My normal temp is 37.4, so I wouldn't class it a fever for myself.

But if he is hot to touch and/or says he feels hot, then sounds like a fever and no harm in getting him tested.

Most guidance now doesn't have a set temperature and just says about being hot to touch.

anappleadaykeeps · 01/04/2021 09:05

If it is 2 degrees above normal for what that same thermometer usually reads for him, then I would treat it as a temperature, and (a) book a Covid test, (b) make sure he rests and drinks lots of water.

DIshedUp · 01/04/2021 09:06

Ita possible your thermometer calibration is out. Its really unlikely that a home thermometer is going to be accurate to a couple of points of a degree

If he feels feverish then get him a test. Better that than walk around with covid

Seeline · 01/04/2021 09:19

I would feel rough with a temp of that level. It is at a level that means there is a reason it is higher than normal. I would get him tested.
