DenisetheMenace · 31/03/2021 20:23

Fantastic news.

DoodleDJ · 31/03/2021 20:28

Great news! My 16y old is having it tomorrow

DenisetheMenace · 31/03/2021 20:41

Where are you, DoodleDJ?

DoodleDJ · 31/03/2021 20:51

Surrey

DenisetheMenace · 31/03/2021 20:55

Thanks DoodleDJ. We’re hundreds of miles away. Can’t wait for our asthmatic teenager to have his jab. CEV dad’s been done, due his second soon. I’ve had my first now. People tell me that asthma is no longer the worry it was originally thought to be but we’ll all be so much more confident if he’s had both before he starts his university course mid-September.

Hope your’s goes well tomorrow.

DoodleDJ · 31/03/2021 21:01

Thank you Denise, we feel very lucky. My son's friend also 16 had his a few weeks ago now for severe asthma, so hopefully you are really close too. We are in an area that has really pushed through the vaccination schedule - we've been a week or two ahead all the way right since they started - I think the theory is that as were outer London commuter-ville there are a lot of working age professionals and maybe less elderly than other areas so they got through the older groups really quickly. I'm sure you will only be a week or so behind.

Orangesandlemons77 · 03/04/2021 09:33

My 16 yr old is due to have it soon also. SW.

Just for reassurance purposes, my 16y old had his on Thursday and still not a single side effect, which really surprised me as he must have an optimal immune system. if anything, it has got him out of the could mood he's been in since hearing his school are continuing with internal GCSE exams Grin

NRCS · 03/04/2021 11:15

Foul mood

I'm curious about side-effects in children.
I can see a stronger rationale for vaccinating the secondary age group who struggled with more disruption over the winter than extending down into primary age.

Probably more relevant to AZ than Pfizer, but there seems to be more initial unpleasantness as the immune system adjusts as people get younger. As the individual risk goes down it would be a pretty major turn off if the side-effects are as unpleasant as the illness itself and the main benefit is the herd immunity aspect. My DCs have their flu vaccines each year as the herd immunity is worthwhile and they've never struggled with side effects, but if they are likely to end up feeling as awful as I did from it yesterday, that's a pretty awkward decision to knowingly make and inflict upon them compared to deciding for myself. Hopefully the vaccines are adjusted to reduce those effects of immune response?

Watching with interest...
(Just hoping my second dose goes better)

I had the AZ vaccine and felt rough for a good couple of weeks, fluey initially then very fatigued, but nothing major. Very sore arm, but I always get that from flu. DH had AZ and was also flueys, headaches for a few days but then fine and no sore arm. DS had Pfizer and so far not a single side effect. He would happily have taken the AZ one though, if available, and we would have happily recommended it to him as, in his case, he having it to protect his parent, grandparent and, I guess, many of his teachers. He understood that and was fine with and prepared for a few days of feeling ill, if it happened. He just asked to time it so it didn't potentially interfere with a football match next week.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/04/2021 12:33

I think they should start with older/teen girls, then older/ teen boys and then the under 12s afterwards.

The evidence is that tween/ young teen girls have suffered disproportionately mentally. They are also the more mature physically so we can have more confidence that the vaccine will behave as it does in adults.

NRCS · 03/04/2021 14:20

it should continue to be done on age not sex, same as with the adult program. 16y olds aren't being given it because their mental health has suffered during lockdown - and some boys have been affected, some not, same as some girls have been affected, some not. They are bing given it for 1 of 2 reasons only - they themselves have a medical condition that makes them.vlinically vulnerable - eg severe asthma or they live in the same house as an adult who is CEV/group 4. Thats it. You could argue that 40y olds have suffered more than 70y olds in the pandemic due to loss of income/redundancy/unable to work with the MH issues that might go along with that, but we aren't prioritising them for a vaccine. It's about stopping people getting v sick and needing hospitalisation.
