When do you think we will be able to try on clothes in shops?

I'm finding not being able to try on clothes before buying them really tricky. Mostly I've avoided buying anything much at all, especially if it is at all fitted.

I really want to get some new summer dresses, I've been waiting a year to buy some new bras and the kids definitely need new swimming costumes. There's no way they can squeeze into the costumes bought in summer 2019 for another year

In normal times I usually have to try on several of each before finding anything that comes close to fitting. One DD has SEN and sensory issues so swimming costume shopping generally involves trying on practically every costume in several shops before she finds one she will dain to wear.

How are other people managing? The buying, trying on at home and returning, seems such a faff. I can't afford to buy 50 swimming costumes even if I return 49 of them. 😂

Being able to use fitting rooms is one of the previously normal things that I'm missing the most.

@doireallyneedaname

Questions like this always baffle me.

The last thing I want to do is try on clothes many strangers may have done just before me.

Unless they are quarantining the clothes...

The risk of catching covid in this way is so low. And we can't keep buying clothes that don't fit forever!
@HalfShrunkMoreToGo Well, given we are in a pandemic I wouldn’t try them on 20 minutes later at home. If I was unsure about clothing I’d let it sit for a day or so and then try it on.
How are you getting it from the rail to the till to buy it? 🤔

I’m not in the uk, but our shops have been open and closed through various lockdowns. However whenever not in lockdown, they have opened and changing rooms all open as usual. Covid doesn’t seem to be spreading on a huge scale due to people trying on jeans. Clothes shops have been open here since December.

I tried on jeans the other day. Bought 3 pairs. First jeans after baby last year so I wouldn’t have wanted to buy online as needed to check what was comfy and size.

doireallyneedaname · 29/03/2021 19:09

@Bordois you’ve lost me? I can sanitise my hands after touching clothing, but to try on clothes you’ll usually be pulling them over your head, face, hair... I’d rather not risk it.

It’s a non issue for me anyway as I rarely find anything I like in the shops, so most of what I get is online.

To those saying the risk is low for transmission in this way, I don’t really know how you can be so sure. All it takes is one asymptomatic case to try it on before you in the same way.

When cases are lower I’ll obviously feel much more comfortable.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/03/2021 19:09

There is no point in attempting to go clothes shopping until I can do it comfortably with a bare face and try clothes on my awkward shape. The only clothing I buy online is sportswear which is forgiving anyway.

I think half the clothes shops in town have closed permanently anyway. I'm not sure where I actually would buy clothes now!

God yes, I need new bras too! Forgot about those as I’ve hardly worn one for the last year! 😬 Bravissimo is a must cos I have no idea what size I am in those either now!

likeamillpond · 29/03/2021 19:46

@edwinbear

Buy stuff in Bluewater, take to the loos, try on and return what I don't need. It's a bit grim, but I need to try stuff on too and can't be bothered with returning stuff from online shops.
I did the same thing with Next once. The jobsworrhs wouldn't let me try on a jacket so I bought it, took it to the car and tried on. It was too big so returned straight away for the next size.

In some sypeemaekers (looking at you Sainsbury's( they cover up all the mirrors in the clothes section. So you can't even hold something up against you to see if the colour suits.
No wonder places profits are down.

wintertravel1980 · 29/03/2021 20:02

The shops that allow you to try things on (while using the pointless steaming ritual in-between):

 • Hugo Boss
 • Sandro
 • Claudie Pierlot
 • Reiss
 • probably Gant

Gant and Reiss are in Bluewater.

Comefromaway · 29/03/2021 21:15

Bravissimo were quarantining clothes tried in but they encouraged me and Dd to try lots of different bras to find the right one.

Jaeger Outlet were happy for me to try on.

M & S wouldn’t allow it.

RaggieDolls · 29/03/2021 21:26

I need to get DD measured for her first bra. I'm not sure how I will achieve that if changing rooms etc aren't open. It's so frustrating.

Thank goodness Clarks are sensible and are measuring and fitting shoes properly. Can't wait for them to reopen.

ssd · 29/03/2021 22:14

Can clarks measure and fit shoes and still social distance? Or are rhey putting staff at risk ?

ssd · 29/03/2021 22:16

@likeamillpond. Jobsworth???

Do you mean a sales assistant following company procedure? They don't make the rules .

Squidwardrules · 29/03/2021 22:22

@ssd

Can clarks measure and fit shoes and still social distance? Or are rhey putting staff at risk ?
They have a little portable glass screen for the shop assistant, kid sticks their feet through a hole at the bottom of it, and they wear gloves too
ssd · 29/03/2021 22:29

Fair enough.

Quit4me · 29/03/2021 22:38

It’s bras and jeans for me.
To get a bra to fit, I need to take 7-10 into the changing room in my size. They all fit differently.
Even with marks prices, I’m not buying 7-10 bras and taking them home.
Jeans are similar but far more expensive. If I go into say next, I will need to take in 5 or so pairs at least- sometimes in 2 sizes because I am between sizes and a 12 in one pair is totally different to a 12 in another.
All my jeans have holes in and I have one bra left that isn’t baggy or broken.
Desperate times
