New rules: Is 15 miles drive excessive for a walk?

We've stayed very local for exercise during lockdown. These local areas have been very busy but it's been ok. We're now hoping to return to some of our favourite places - is 15miles drive too far for a bike ride/run?

Nope, go for it! Enjoy Smile

idontlikealdi · 29/03/2021 13:38

No.

zzzebra · 29/03/2021 13:39

The guidance is still 'only travel if necessary' but that's guidance rather than law.

Personally I think occasionally driving 15miles to exercise is fine.

Go enjoy yourself and this lovely weather, just be sensible while you're out.

TheJackieWeaver · 29/03/2021 13:39

The ‘stay at home’ order has finished so you’re definitely allowed to do that.

RingtheBells · 29/03/2021 13:40

We have booked National Trust 35 miles away for tomorrow, Matt Hancock said on This Morning that you can go as far as you want but you cannot stay overnight.

There is no legal distance!!!

Bluebells32 · 29/03/2021 14:08

15 miles of Freeeeedom!! 😊

I would consider around 25 miles to still be local but our country is very spread out.

poppycat10 · 29/03/2021 14:40

I've been driving for exercise throughout this lockdown. It wasn't like the first one where all the car parks were closed.

Probably didn't drive more than 8 miles max, but 15 is still local for me.

Anyway there is no legal distance and never has been.

dividedwefall · 29/03/2021 14:45

Just go! There is no law against and the police will not try to enforce the loose guidance of 'try not to go too far' as confirmed by a senior officer this morning.

TheLost · 29/03/2021 14:48

Just do it. I live in a tourist town and all the second home owners have turned up today. The stay at home order is lifted so do what you like. National Trust properties have been open for the last month or so, the one nearest to me is in the middle of nowhere, nearest town around 10 miles away and it was always fully booked. It’s pretty accepted that people have been travelling in their local areas for weeks.

Dundustin · 29/03/2021 14:52

It's fine.

RingtheBells · 29/03/2021 16:08

Wasn't a lot of the policing about people travelling a distance and getting fines because the police were using the criteria of 'essential journey' and 'stay at home' which has been dropped now.

Abraxan · 29/03/2021 16:10

Whilst the government has said for people to try and stay local, the actual ruling has finished today. So you can travel where you want/need to within the country.

I'm planning a long journey next week to see my parents for the day - first time in months.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 29/03/2021 16:16

All I would suggest is not this weekend, as you may find it very busy unless the cold puts people off.

mn81987 · 29/03/2021 16:19

Matt Hancock said himself you can go as far as you want as long as you're home in the evening and don't sleep over anywhere.

mightbealittlebitmad · 29/03/2021 16:32

I went a bit further than that twice last month so I could take the kids for a walk round a forest. Nobody was policing anything, nobody stopped me, all was fine. Might drive 28 miles during the holidays to take the kids to one of their favourite places.

As far as I'm concerned an hour's drive isn't it insane as long as there are toilets at the other end. Not something I would do daily but from time to time it's nice to have a change of scenery.

Sleepyblueocean · 29/03/2021 17:16

It's fine, it's allowed and anyway the police will be turning their attention to all the wild camping and staying overnight in vans in car parks that is going to go on.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 29/03/2021 17:19

No. I've been driving for a walk since January. I kept to back roads early on when it seemed like they were actually stopping people, but after a few weeks I just carried on.

I'm thinking about the seaside next week (an hour's drive). I expect lots of people are thinking about the seaside next week too.

HolmeH · 29/03/2021 19:37

We are off to a couple Easter Egg hunts this weekend, both about an hour, hour & a half away! Cannot wait to see friends & have a change of scenery 🙌🏼

sirfredfredgeorge · 29/03/2021 20:01

There is no legal distance!!!

There is! And it will depend on where you live, as there's still a restriction is on leaving the country, but that's kind of quibbling.

feellikeanalien · 29/03/2021 20:07

I've been driving DD 16 miles to school every day! We are in the middle of nowhere however.

We're going to an English Heritage place for an Easter Hunt tomorrow which is near DDs school.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 29/03/2021 20:08

I live near the seaside so it would probably be sensible for me to go someplace else in anticipation of the influx of tourists. Good enough excuse?

TheLost · 29/03/2021 20:12

You don’t need an excuse nobetterthansheshouldbe, the stay at home order has been lifted.
