In the future? Say in the next few years.

So many jobs that were lost include: retail, hospitality and leisure. Also many self employed workers have suffered.

Do think competition will rise for jobs that are deemed more secure e.g. healthcare, education, other public sector jobs etc..

I lost my retail buying job last March when the company went under, and despite 12 years in women's fashion head office I've taken a paycut and gone into financial services. So yes! I knew if I moved company I'd be back on the chopping board.

There has been an increase in STEM degree enquiries at universities. So yes of course.

frozendaisy · 28/03/2021 18:35

Yes I am following a more bespoke path once schools back to almost guaranteed routine

covetingthepreciousthings · 28/03/2021 19:07

Yes I think so, sadly it'll probably affect people wanting to get into the Arts I think aswell.

It could work the opposite direction for some people.

The risks of those 'more secure' jobs are very much higher in a pandemic. Many people have left or want to leave NHS due to the stress of working in a pandemic. Plus hundreds of healthcare workers dead from Covid-19 due to having to continue to treat patients during a pandemic. Not an attractive job feature for many people....

Applies to some extent to all those keyworker jobs. Yes, they might be perceived as secure, but that also meant those people had to keep on showing up and risking their health/lives and those of those they live with.

Well who the fuck would want to invest in this country now they have seen how easily the Government can shut things down not once not twice but three times. And they cant guarantee there wont be a fourth.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 28/03/2021 23:52

I know for sure I'll never take a new job which requires working from home. Hated it, prefer being skint, will never willingly do again

Applications to nursing degrees are up, so a lot of people obviously do find it an appealing option (though I can understand why those working as nurses currently might struggle to believe it!)
Justanticipating · 29/03/2021 00:17

It's made me want to get into nursing after being in retail/financial jobs. Got made redundant from my financial job, and i'm glad because I know now I want to do something that makes a difference.
So I definitely do think there will be a change for a short while, but I reckon once things settle down people will be back to normal.

namechangeaga1n · 29/03/2021 05:14

Yes. Many probably already have. I think brexit will also impact on that too.

Hydrate · 29/03/2021 05:21

Yes.

I have. Had Xmas and decided that when lockdown lifted I didn't want to go back to travelling as much...so started looking for about 1 hour! Found a job, applied, interviewed 4 days ,after and offered it.

Covid pushed me to look at work life balance
