Can you really see every restriction being lifted and life going back to how it was before? Boris said that he sees no reason to detract from the roadmap but how can we be opening nightclubs, going to gigs and going on holidays when we are almost in April and only just being allowed to sit in a garden with a few family members/friends?

I have a question regarding the ‘all social restrictions lifted’ in June actually: what does that actually mean, and do travel restrictions fall outside of that?

And no, I can’t see June 21st being the end of it all at the moment but I would be delighted to be wrong on this!

bumbleymummy · 27/03/2021 12:46

I think they could probably lift things a bit faster but they just want to make sure there isn’t a massive jump in cases that lead to hospitalisations (which there shouldn’t be, given the vaccines). It all seems a bit dragged out tbh.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 27/03/2021 12:51

I agree with you bumbleymummy.

I don't think they will speed things up, but they could and should!

HSHorror · 27/03/2021 13:06

I think jun 21 is too soon given the cax delay so majority of 40s wont be vaxxed until may time.

People under 50 aren’t in the high risk groups, unless CEV, so they’re less likely to be hospitalised. As far as ‘putting strain on the NHS’ goes, it won’t make much difference if that group isn’t vaccinated.
KurtWilde · 27/03/2021 13:13

I think if Boris retracts the restrictions being lifted on 21st there will be national uproar quite frankly, and rightly so.

onemouseplace · 27/03/2021 13:17

They need to report back on whether social distancing will still be in place then ASAP as that will make a massive difference to lots of it I suspect.

Currently trying to plan a school event for July and it's a massive pain as most people are just assuming we can go ahead with no restrictions in place.

Ellpellwood · 27/03/2021 13:19

The government doesn't want to/cannot get rid of Covid. They just want us all to quietly suffer with it at home and not put strain on the NHS. Which should be achievable once all the over-50s have had a vaccine, reducing transmission and hospitalisation.

It doesn't mean that a 25 year old won't catch it at a gig and feel crap for a few weeks.

LemonSherbetFancies · 27/03/2021 15:26

I think so many people are expecting everything to go back to complete normality on June 21st. No mask wearing, no social distancing, huge crowds and holidays. Yet there are other people saying this definitely will not happen so I don't know what to think.

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/03/2021 15:32

I think that everything largely will apart from travel.

It doesn't matter if all the 20 somethings aren't vaccinated because they're extremely unlikely to need hospital treatment so it will be their choice whether they want to risk catching Covid. I expect most of them aren't worried about it and will happily go back to normal.

Foreign travel will be the big thing. It depends on how far along other countries are with their vaccination programmes, Boris might not want to risk bringing mutations back into the UK so we may do an Australia and keep travel banned until everywhere else catches up.

Ellpellwood · 27/03/2021 15:36

It might, but cases will go up. It depends what the threshold will be for more restrctions. It can't just be "rising cases" as we'd never get out, and they won't pay furlough forever.

Ladderclimber · 27/03/2021 15:45

June 21st is the new ‘Eat out to help out’. We’ll look back on it as a big mistake and wonder why so many idiots trusted the government.

I think they said that a rise in cases must not risk the NHS becoming overwhelmed. So if cases rise but hospital rates stay stable, we should be OK.
Wellbythebloodyhell · 27/03/2021 15:51

I cant see it happening tbh although I hope it does, however I do hope that all this close contact isolating bollocks stops then too. We can't be going wild freely mixing and Still be sending hoards of kids home from school to isolate

SoWhyNot · 27/03/2021 15:54

They have already said that social distancing, wearing masks and working from home will be reviewed by 21 June but never included those in the roadmap out. I can’t see them stopping those three considering that Boris said today we are likely to start seeing the effect of Europe’s third wave in three weeks’ time and we have a delay with vaccine supplies. Once the third wave is over we will be heading into winter where we have been told for months to expect another wave as it’s winter.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 27/03/2021 15:54

Although regardless of what Boris says I doubt many will keep up with the no household mixing by then anyway it's already gone on too long, compliance won't last much longer

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 27/03/2021 15:56

I think face coverings in some situations will remain, and as mentioned, foreign travel ones.

HipTightOnions · 27/03/2021 15:58

What happened to “data not dates”? The dates quoted were supposed to be the earliest possible, definitely not before then, but possibly then, if everything went well. Now they seem to be set in concrete.
PurBal · 27/03/2021 16:12

Agree @HipTightOnions.

KurtWilde · 27/03/2021 16:41

They've already moved the goalposts regarding who needs to be vaccinated before restrictions lift and it's honestly a joke now how easily people are just shrugging and STILL accepting this after 12 months. Compliance is already waning and I sincerely hope people protest in their millions if Boris changes his tune again.

They're rushing a no protesting bill through the House of Commons as we speak which means more of our freedoms will be snatched away.

manicinsomniac · 27/03/2021 17:11

I think it's possible but not guaranteed. 21st June is more than 3 months away. 3 months ago we had 50,000+ cases a day and 1500 deaths not long after. Now we have 5-6000 cases a day and under 100 deaths a day. In another 3 months who knows what it will be like. Cases could shoot up (hopefully not to 50,000 a day!) but as long as serious illness rates stay low it shouldn't matter.

The problem is that it's been built up as a promise and we'll be crushed if we don't get it but it was only ever 'no earlier than'.

I don't think it said 'all restrictions lifted'. I think the phrase is 'all restrictions to be reviewed' or something like that. Also, the June date is not set in stone, it's a 'not earlier than' date.

My guess - and I hope I'm not being too optimistic here - is that while there may be some restrictions on international travel and crowds in places like sports stadia for some time, life will be pretty much normal by July.

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 27/03/2021 17:40

@IcedPurple this article says ‘all legal limits on social contact will be removed’ - not reviewed.
And yes, I know not set in stone. That’s why I said I didn’t think that will be the end of it; it has always been ‘this is the earliest date’ situation. My question was about what does ‘social contact’ actually mean? Because it doesn’t mean ‘all covid restrictions’ removed ? Eg is international travel outside of this? What about masks on public transport and in shops etc?

Dustyboots · 27/03/2021 17:48

I didn’t believe a word of the road map and am expecting no change from what we have now. Any change will therefore be an unexpected ‘treat’. Thanks bog hole Boris. Not!

As others have said we’re in for a bumpy ride where the tories slowly strip away our rights and freedoms, move the goal posts etc all in the name of new variants.

I’m resigned to this. I refuse to allow myself to be hoodwinked and let down - again.

I’m waiting for the rest of us to wake up to what is happening. It will happen. In time.
