If life isn’t relatively ‘normal’ from 21 June. What happens next?

21 June seems to be the date that everyone is pinning their hopes on. But to me it still seems a bit vague. Stadiums can open inside and out, can larger weddings take place?, christenings? 21st parties etc, parties at home, music festivals? Are venues taking bookings from that date.
If, come 21 June, there are still restrictions on meeting in groups and events are still banned. Then what? I really will find it difficult to continue having any hope given we will be in summer which is supposed to be when virus’s are reduced. With over 50% of adults vaccinated, what more are we supposed to do?
How will the government manage it?

I get the impression personal gatherings, weddings etc, will still have limited numbers.

Stadiums, concerts etc will have reduced capacity and testing/vaccination proof/both on entry.

I mostly care about schooling getting back to normal with science labs etc.

So it won't be normal as it was more baby steps for society to take in account Covid-19 will be around like flu, and how we can mitigate this whilst trying to have lives as well.

Cornettoninja · 26/03/2021 10:21

This is part of the problem imho, people want concrete answers to questions but this is an active and changing situation. Who knows what the situation will look like in June, we can have good predictions and bad predictions but that’s all they are - predictions with theoretical ways to tackle them which might not be workable when it comes to it.

If things go tits up (again) then I suspect it would be more of the same; tighter restrictions and lockdowns whilst we look to science to modify the vaccines. On the other hand it may never come to that and what we have is enough to get us through to the other side of this pandemic.

It’s all speculation. The biggest impact on our day to day lives is the capacity of the NHS. The government don’t really care if we’re ill as long as we’re not clogging up hospitals, so as long as the vaccines are effective in keeping the illness mild enough to manage at home then we should stay on track with easing of restrictions.

Israel are showing some really promising results at almost 50% of their population vaccinated so there’s every reason to think that we’re also rapidly getting into a good position.

I do wonder how long people will be compliant for. We're seeing ongoing protests in Bristol, ok not because of coronavirus but I'd imagine there's an element of anger in that regard too. I wonder if there's a chance of mass civil disobedience; people have had enough.

Bagelsandbrie · 26/03/2021 19:30

I think they were wrong to give an “end date”. We don’t even know what’s going to happen in the next month! We’ve never been in a situation like this before. Every day things are evolving. I’ve actually stopped expecting anything now and just live very much day to day.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 26/03/2021 19:45

I don’t think I can do another lockdown, actually I know I can’t.

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 19:45

I thought all the dates were subject to change and rightly so. they have to keep an eye on certain things surely?

It's not really an "end date", although many will interpret it as such. It's a "not before" date.

This is what I worry about, if things start going bad again in a few months then I wonder how much people would actually tolerate another lockdown or tightening restrictions again.
StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 26/03/2021 20:11

@MercyBooth that's awful.

Policing 'by consent' is looking very precarious.

kittensarecute · 26/03/2021 20:19

If the roadmap doesn't go to plan, I genuinely fear for my mental health. I want my life back, there is a vaccine now so we need to go back to normal, I've sacrificed as much as I'm prepared to.

MiddleClassMother · 26/03/2021 20:21

I don't see how I can cope much longer. It's keeping me same thinking of the restrictions easing!

Doomsdayiscoming · 26/03/2021 20:25

I’d worry about it nearer the time.

Personally I think there is very little to worry about. I’d be more concerned about next Winter. But even that should be manageable.

MercyBooth · 26/03/2021 20:32

Well i dont think people will put up with being told they cant see family for a second Christmas.

StealthPolarBear · 26/03/2021 20:47

I never thought they'd put up with it last Christmas. I never thought it'd last this long.
Compliance has astounded me.

AcornAutumn · 26/03/2021 20:57

To answer your question OP

By the 22nd June they will be unveiling statues of Chris Whitty and other key players and you will only be permitted to leave your home in a hazmat suit, with a vax passport, to walk to the statues to worship them.

They'll build them in every town.

Delatron · 26/03/2021 21:59

People won’t comply anymore and the government know this.

They can keep businesses shut but they can’t police seeing family. A year is too long. If family have been vaccinated then I’m sure most people
will make their own risk assessment.

If we’re not protecting the NHS anymore then why are we living this shit half life with no end date. There will be riots and huge non compliance.

MercyBooth · 26/03/2021 22:54

This is what I keep saying! When people I know are all ooh, third wave, I just think yes, but as long as we're all at home with it the government will give no shits. They were desperate to avoid overflowing hospitals, queueing ambulances and extra deaths due to lack of beds.

I don't think we will have another lockdown once we've nearly all had dose 1.

I'm not sure the virus gives a thought to civil disobedience. Protest all you like, I guess.
Chazzy19876 · 27/03/2021 07:19

I would really like to think that people would say enough is enough but the government have done so well in putting the fear in everyone.

I think there are two camps, those that are quietly getting on with seeing family/friends because they’ve had enough and those that are terrified.

Name128535689953 · 27/03/2021 13:36

I think they UK govt have over-promised re the June date. Or at least positioned it badly enough to set false expectations.

I live in Europe where cases are on the increase again (ok so our vaccine roll out has been dreadful) and every time I talk to friends and family back in the uk they are full of excitement over expected big group plans in the summer - weddings, anniversary celebrations like mini festivals, “things getting back to normal” etc.

I am pretty sure there will still be restrictions on numbers by then, but they all seem to think there’ll be parties of 100+ and everything will be like 2019.

It’s really amazing how the media etc influence/brainwash. We went into lockdown last year with schools closing and home working 2 weeks before the UK did. My friends back home were all like “that’s a bit dramatic”. Now it feels the reverse re easing of measures.

Our govt here have laid out the plan for March and April only, and it’s all very cautious and with clear criteria to be met at each phase of easing. Beyond that we’ll have to wait and see, but with a third wave looming I’m not holding my breath.

All that being said, our restrictions have not been as harsh as the UK’s, with limited household mixing allowed and schools have been open since last June. —Plus our weather is better— So it’s a bit more tolerable here.

I'm perfectly happy with this! Not saying I don't care but the current measures are only appropriate if they're stopping deaths or the NHS being overwhelmed surely?
StealthPolarBear · 27/03/2021 13:40

What is it we're trying to achieve once the majority of the over 50s have had the vaccine?

Xenia · 27/03/2021 13:41

Since March 2020 many of us have not wanted any of the restrictions in place. I would rather increase my risk of death and that of my children by 100x than have the measured in place so I hope the June date is freedom day but MPs including Labour voting for a 6 month extension to the CV act was not a good day this week.
