Why are the EU saying astra zennica vaccine is ineffective

Why are the EU saying astra zennica vaccine is ineffective whilst telling them to hurry up with production and give vaccine to EU before anyone else?

It's bizzare!

OP posts:
Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 09:09

I don't think they are saying its ineffective anymore.

ajandjjmum · 26/03/2021 09:15

They listened to their leaders - who it seems then changed their minds.

Unfortunately mud sticks.

They have millions of doses of unused Oxford AZ, as people are not accepting that vaccine.

Apparently, AZ have said they will never take part in an 'at cost' rollout again - what was actually a really public spirited thing to do, has been turned into a PR headache for their brand.

I agree OP - none of it makes sense!

MarinPrime · 26/03/2021 09:19

The whole saga is very strange. Macron said it didn't work but didn't back this up with any scientific data.
They're allowing it for people over 50 now I think, previously they said it wasn't effective in older people and should only be given to those under 50.
Paul Hislop summed up the EU stance well in QT
"Brits give us your vaccine, it doesn't work".

x2boys · 26/03/2021 09:19

Yes mud sticks,my DH was talking to a neighbour this morning who refused the AZ vaccine as she didn't want blood clots ,it's MMR causes autism scenario all over again Macron et Al have a lot to answer for

Lockheart · 26/03/2021 09:37

A) you're some weeks behind the curve on the news, it's now agreed to be effective;

B) the UK govt has also directed AZ made within the UK to supply the UK in priority, that's not unusual; and

C) it's spelt Astrazeneca

teenagemisery · 26/03/2021 09:38

I think they have to follow the science so cannot say it is ineffective.

However, I am aware of one study from February that showed that AZ is ineffective against the South African variant, which about 10% of cases in France are, I think.

So if the SA variant really takes off in France and the rest of Europe, they may have a problem.

I don't know about Pfizer studies and the SA variant - would be interested to know if anyone knows of any, although I seem to remember it being reported as effective (?) - if so, that may be why the EU seem to be so inconsistent. They want the most effective against the SA variant, which they thought was Pfizer, so they wanted to keep all the Pfizer in the EU and not administer the AZ. Then EMA said AZ was fine, now they don't know what to do.

But politically the low rates in some EU countries mean the EU is under pressure to use all the vaccine they have within their borders, including the AZ

Interestingly, not all EU countries have such low rates, some are quite decent and with second doses being given after 3 weeks for Pfizer as well, which is overall quite a good rate for those countries.

Because its a knock off version thats not as good as AstraZeneca?

TokyoSushi · 26/03/2021 09:43

Honestly, I think they're just annoyed because they cocked up ordering it in the first place and haven't rolled out their vaccination programme very well. In addition, although I'm certainly no Brexiteer, they're also annoyed that we seem to be doing so well.

Rather than blame their own lack of organisation, they're blaming AZ for poor supply/not fulfiling the contract. It's political.

I think I would have had to have told the neighbour how stupid they are!

Their share price has taken a nose dive too. They agreed to producing at cost because it was a condition of the Oxford scientists, having got a pharmaceutical company to prioritise lives over profit the EU have completely fucked it up, slow hand clap for them. No good deed goes unpunished.

Cornettoninja · 26/03/2021 10:11

It feels weird to have sympathy for a pharmaceutical company but here we are. They haven’t helped themselves in some respects, from what I can make out their presentation of their data has been less than ideal but they absolutely do have an effective, easily transportable and cheap vaccine. It’s madness that it’s become a political football.

BertieBotts · 26/03/2021 10:22

The news in europe must be very different from the news in the UK! This is the first I've heard of it and AZ is the one available to younger eligible people where I live in Germany.

Then they can send them here, we will have them
BIWI · 26/03/2021 10:25

Actually @Lockheart if you're going to be picky (as you were) it's Astra Zeneca Hmm

justanotherneighinparadise · 26/03/2021 10:27

They’ve created uncertainty and that breeds distrust and concern. Honestly they couldn’t have handled this any worse post Brexit. I bet there is a hell of a lot of shouting behind the scenes.

wombatspoopcubes · 26/03/2021 10:42

I live in the EU and getting my first AZ shit today. Very happy about that!

Not so happy with all the public mud throwing at AZ and their customers.... I still believe in the EU as a whole, but this was/is handled very badly and frankly shameful.

BigWoollyJumpers · 26/03/2021 11:05

my first AZ shit today. You may well get that too Grin.

No it isn't. It's AstraZeneca.
OuiOuiKitty · 26/03/2021 12:00

The EU aren't saying that?
If you are interested in reading actual news though you can read a bit here about why some countries have been a bit skeptical about the AZ vaccine www.google.com/amp/s/www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/why-there-is-so-much-confusion-about-the-astrazeneca-vaccine/amp

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 26/03/2021 12:02

They are not saying that, though.

What I wouldn't give for an AZ shit...Wink
This year, hopefully.

NoseinBook3 · 26/03/2021 12:07

A smear campaign which is unfounded but politically driven.
