If 21st June is 'irreversible' freedom day then why have the emergency covid rules been extended by 6 months..?

I thought it was not before 21st June

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 25/03/2021 17:52

AGAIN?
Because the current dates are 'the earliest' - not definite dates. It had been explain a lot of times!

Irreversible - is a stupid term to use, BUT they are referring to the hope that once each stage has been lifted we won't have to go back, not the road map dates. The actual dates will be given one at a time after seeing how each lifting impacts the hospitalisation rates etc (4 criteria).

The legislation had to be changed because it was tied in with the 'stay at home' legislation which they're meant to be lifting & we would have been without a rule on international travel & other things.

It's necessary to have this legislation in place so (in theory at least) they can act quickly if we get a variant that escapes the vaccine.

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants thank you for explaining it so graciously.

Irreversible was the term used by BJ.

Irreversible with regards to this lockdown period maybe? Not sure.

I understand the reasons behind the extension and personally agree with it. The success of vaccines and the impact of variants (some of which won’t even exist yet) is completely unknowable. If the government need to act they need the ability to do so reasonably quickly. That’s not to say I think they wouldn’t dither and fuck around again, but I understand the logic.

Depending on what happens over the next six months I’m not concerned about an extension at this precise moment in time.

He has said a lot of things over the past year that were ridiculous or magical thinking.

millenialblush · 25/03/2021 22:01

Because it's all a load of BS. We will be graced with a few weeks of 'freedom' (if you've had a vaccine), and then 'new variants' will come along and then BAM, back into lockdown we go, with tighter restrictions no doubt. But people will be grateful for those few weeks of summer and so comply to the new rules. Fucking predictable as fuck.

What part of the Coronavirus Act being in place for two years with six month reviews went over the heads of so many MNers?

Tbf, it seems to have gone over the heads of a few MPs as well.

Yes, he's been saying 'irreversible' since he announced the road map. It's, as I said, a stupid term for him to use. Obviously we all HOPE it's a one way road map, BUT no one (least of all him) can say that for sure. One variant that escapes the vaccine & we will have to close things again and people will be more upset/angry because Boris said it was irreversible. Honestly, they should stuff him and sit him in the corner, where he can do no harm.

HazeyJaneII · 26/03/2021 06:06

Because we can't predict where we will be in a few months time with regards to Covid, things can change and it is important that we can act without delay, in response to that change.

Boris should have a gagging order on speaking in public, he is a fool who talks out of his hole.
